Doctors Kiv, Newell and Azmay along with Crewman Trimbo all stand at the ready as the casualties begin to make their way into Sickbay. Doctor Kiv looks to Doctors Newell and Azmay and motions to Crewman Smith.

"I'd like the two of you to tend to Mr. Smith and Thompson, Crewman Trimbo, help me with Commander Qech."

The Bajoran Doctor moves over to Qech and helps her onto a biobed. As she runs a preliminary scan she looks to the First Officer smiling a little.

"A little too much excitement, Commander?"

"A little too much excitement, Commander?"

Qech smiled. "Getting out of bed can be too much excitement on the wrong day, Doctor Kiv." She sighed, and looked around sickbay as the doctor worked on her mostly healed injures (thanks to Lt. Calodan). It was strange being the one laying on the biobed. She was used to being in the doctor's position. Out of habit (and hoping the doctor wouldn't ask why her heart rate was so ridiculously fast), she made conversation.

"So, they say Doctor's make the worst patients. Should I start complaining, or trying to escape with missing limbs or something? I feel like I'm not living up to expectations here." She paused for a second, then added: "Though don't feel you have to remove any limbs just to ease these feelings for me."

(OOC: I assume Thompson is Ensign Lawrence Thompson, but I cannot find his file at USS Hartington (http://www.dumpsterdivinggeek.com/hartington/index.php?page=main).)

IC:
Ensign Azmay let Doctor Kiv take care of Ensign Thompson, and stood next to Petty Officer Smith's bed: "By your leave, doctor"

E then proceeded to scan his wounds with es medical tricorder.

"Sir, this one is going to give you some painkillers, and then e will have to remove the arrow. E shall then proceed to close the wound, and with a little luck, you will be up in your feet in a couple of days. Is it ok with you?"

(OOC: Is there anywhere a comprehensive summary of Star Trek's sciences? I mean, what can Medicine do? Surgery? Nanotechnology? Implants? I have found some info on Star Trek official website, but it's unsummarized and not very well organized)

(OOC: Thompson is an NPC character that was wounded in the away mission. Doctor Kiv is taking care of Commander Qech. Doctors Azmay and Newell are helping Smith and Thompson, both of whom were injured. I have something about Star Trek Medicine somewhere. I'll get a link when I get home from work)

Doctor Kiv smiled as she administered a hypo with a mild pain killer.

"Don't worry, Commander-Doctor, I'll be sure to consult you on all of my theories regarding the treatment of this patient."

She handed the hypo back to Crewman Trimbo and resumed scanning the Commander. She was about to say something when her tricorder registered something... out of place. She looked to Trimbo.

"Corpsmen, please draw a vial of blood from the Commander and start analyzing it, I'd also like you to bring up Commander Qech's medical file, please."

She looked back to Qech, a confused look on her face.

"Commander, we've been in space a few weeks now if you count the time we spent in the Alpha Quadrant chasing down the Breen. Since you've reported in, have you come down here for a physical? I know I haven't given you one but we have a few doctors."

Qech raised an eyebrow at the suggestion of a blood test, but otherwise she didn't ask. She held obediently still as Crewmen Trimbo took a blood sample, and waited for Dr. Kiv to get to the point.

"Commander, we've been in space a few weeks now if you count the time we spent in the Alpha Quadrant chasing down the Breen. Since you've reported in, have you come down here for a physical? I know I haven't given you one but we have a few doctors."

She shook her head. "No, actually. I haven't. Ever since I set foot on the ship there's been one away team after another. I haven't had time for much of anything other than chasing down Breen and Cardassians. Lt Calodan hasn't even been able to get his poker night together..." She studied Dr. Kiv's expression for a moment. "Is something wrong?"

The Bajoran's forehead wrinkled, as though she was reading over something she didn't quite agree with. She consulted the tricorder, cleared the data, rescanned... only to confirm her earlier result. This is why we do physicals before we leave spacedock... she thought to herself.

"Is something wrong?"

Doctor Kiv shook her head as Trimbo handed her the PADD containing the Commander's file.

"Not in so many words, Commander... to be honest It's a matter or prospective."

She looked up from the PADD, into the other woman's eyes. Her empathy, a natural byproduct of both her religious and medical training, was clear and unmistakable. She smiled as she helped the Commander down off of the Biobed.

"Mr. Trimbo, please assist the other Doctors in their triage efforts."

As the Corpsmen stepped away, Lornara gently led Davynn by the arm towards her office.

"Perhaps we should speak in private."

(OOC: here is some medical terminology for you to look over:

Medical Terms

Sick Bay - A starship or station medical facility

Emergency Medical Hologram Program (EMP) Is a holographic doctor which can be initiated in medical emergencies. The Holographic projectors are monitored and adjusted by Engineering. The EMP has a direct link to the ships computer and is able to draw on anything new that is put into the ships data banks. The EMP reports directly to the Chief Medical Officier.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) The main doctor of the sick bay, does all the administrative duties. Performs all medical and surgical duties as required. Directs all the Assistant medical personnel and the EMP. The CMO is usually required to be on all away missions.

Assistant Medical Officers (AMO) Assistants the CMO. The Assistants also collect inventory information, stock supplies, and does routine maintenance of the equipment.
An AMO can check the Hypospray supplies, set out medical equipment, prepare the bio-bed, recalibrate the regenerators and tricorder. Set up the Med Lab for test analysis.

Bio Bed - The main patient bed, is capable of tracking the patient vital signs, running scans of the patient. Bio beds can be simple or set up for surgical procedures, depending on the need. Most biobeds have straps to hold down the patients when needed. Usually when the ship is in a battle and or when they need restraining for other reasons.

Life Support Monitor - The life support monitor is usually attached to the bed. It monitors all the vital signs of a patient. The life support monitor needs regular diagnostics run on it, much like a computer does.

Medical Tricorder - A hand held unit used to collect data about the patient. A scanner unit that has the capability of getting detailed cell analysis of every cell in a patients body.

Regenerators - These include the Cardio, Organ and Dermal Regenerators
Regenerators can be directed at a specific point or used to regenerate entire fields.

Cardio regenerators are used to regenerate lung tissue and enhance breathing capabilities.

Organ regenerators can regenerate up to 65% of any organ programmed into it's database.

Dermal regenerators are used to regenerate skin. Used to closeup an open wound, it can be used to regrow skin too.

In a sim, they are sometimes just referred to as a Regenerator. They are also sometimes referred to as a scanner.

Neural Stimulator - can be hand held or attached to a bed. The neural stimulator send electrical impulses to the brain to stimulate the brain making it active again

Cardio Stimulator - used to shock the heart muscles, used to regulate the heart back to a normal beat.

Hypospray - hand held small sized cylinder type spray that can introduce antibiotics, antiseptic, stimulate, sedatives or other drugs directly to the patients system.

Antibiotics - are used to fight off infection, reduce fever, or boost the immune system. One common type is Tricodrazine

Anesthetics - are used to reduce pain or put people to sleep, a strong form, it's usually used before performing surgery. A common form of an Anesthetic is Medorazine, which will induce sleep.

Stimulant - are used to keep people awake and aware of their surroundings, used alot on missions where patient's are injured and must be kept awake during missions.

Sedatives - pain killer or used to calm a hysterical person down. Valium would be a common type of sedative.

Med Paks sometimes called an Emergency Med Kit
- med paks hold everything that most medical people will need in an Emergency situation. The are always taken on away missions and are located through out the ship. They usually contain: A tricorder, regenerator, stimulator, hyposprays and basic surgical equipment. A med paks are continually checked for contents, the equipment recalibrated or fixed as needed. Restocking and maintenance of the med paks are the responsibility of the Assistant medical personnel.

Laser scalpel or Exoscalpal - A medical instrument capable of precise cuts producing little or no blood loss. Allows the surgin to look at the underlying tissue in the body.

And finally the favorite of the medical department......paper work

Med Logs and Patient status reports:

Med logs are the computer logs that keep the medical staff informed and up-to-date on medical procedures.

Patient status reports are the reports kept on a patients status. This could be anything from a annual physical to an injury. They must be reviewed by all medical personnel directly involved with the patient. They also hold testing results, scans, etc.)

Qech walked with the doctor in curious silence, obviously fearing the worst. She'd had a basic physical a few days before getting on the Hartington, just as a matter of Starfleet protocol, but nothing out of the ordinary had turned up. She just hadn't had time for the shipboard follow-up. What could have possibly happened in such a short span of time? As they walked she tried to consider what it might be that would raise such an alarm...

Perhaps something on the planet affected me? But if that's the case, why is it just me?

Qech wracked her brain, but could think of nothing, and began to chew nervously on her bottom lip as she sat down in front of Dr. Kiv's desk.

Doctor balim Fastatén's eyes followed LC Qech as she followed Doctor Kiv into her office. E sincerely hoped things would be fine with her. E then turned es attention back to es patient, Petty Officer Smith.

Es face lacked the muscles needed to smile like a Human, but e managed to turn the Loraby's predatory grimace (similar to a shark's, but with more, thinner and needle-like teeth) into something somehow ressembling a reassuring smile.

"Now, mr. Smith, this one will use the dermal regenerator in your wound, once the arrow has been pulled out, and as e told you, you will up in your feet in a couple of days. But do this one a favour, and do not go doing any kind of stressing physical feats with that leg, if you do not mind"

OOC: Ensign, here is some important medical information that would be great if placed in the story.

www.utfp.org/HQ/Library/medical.htm

You should find nearly everything you need to know about medicine here.
If you have any questions about specific illnesses or need a second opinion, let me or Dr. Kiv know.

Hope this helps

Doctor Kiv stepped around the desk, eyes on the Commander all the while. she looks like she's going out of her mind, best not draw this out... she thought to herself as she lowered herself into the chair. She drew in a breath, tapped a control on her computer terminal and swiveled it to show Qech.

"These are the results of your preflight physical you had with Doctor Bashir back on Deep Space Nine. Everything came up perfectly normal, and I want to stress this now that everything appears to be normal now."

She paused, giving Qech a moment to look at the data presented, knowing the other doctor would be able to make sense of it. After a few moments she continued.

"That said, I've detected something that wasn't there the last time you checked in."

She tapped her PADD and the image on the monitor changed, now reading a mass of medical jargon. Thought the data was there, clear and unmistakable for anyone who knew how to read it to see. Doctor Kiv spoke the words aloud, adding a sense of finality to the situation and with no small amount of certitude in her voice.

"You're pregnant."

An emotional bomb went off inside Qech's gut. The primary feeling was disbelief, but with the evidence right there in front of her she could hardly entertain that as a reasonable thought. She looked at the computer screen in front of her and shook her head.

"Chorionic Gonadotropin.... I'll be damned." She shook her head and looked up at Dr. Kiv, who was still watching her with an air of uncertainty. "Well, that would be the smoking gun, wouldn't it."

She sat back. Her eyes were still on Kiv but her mind was definitely elsewhere. She spoke softly, more to herself than to the other in the room, but still being perfectly audible. "Taj dropped by DS9 to see me off the night before the launch..." She snapped out of her reverie, seeing Dr. Kiv cock her head slightly to one side. "My fiance" she explained. "We were going to start a family when I got back, not before I left."

She breathed a deep sigh, trying to focus on how she felt about the news. The exhaustion from the days' adventure down on the Class L planet left her feeling drained, and particularly unwilling to deal with any new emotions at the moment. Finally she just shrugged and, tossing a wry smile at Dr. Kiv, simply said:

"Whoops."

"Whoops."

Doctor Kiv smiled warmly again, the very essence of compassion and poise. She taps a few commands into her PADD and then spoke up.

"I'm going to schedule for a complete workup for the day after tomorrow, we'll scan you from head to toe and get you started on the right nutrition schedule."

Before Qech could protest, the Chief Medical Officer held up her hand, stopping her cold.

"No buts about it Commander, you may be a doctor, but you're not your doctor. That would be me. We'll get you through this together. Now... you may want to arrange for some comm time, get a chance to talk to that fiance of yours and let him know the good news."
