Marek nodded to Talbert, then waited for the next report, surreptitiously watching the Vulcan and another engineer stuff conduit back into the compartment. Talbert's personnel file noted he was efficient and demanding, and it appeared it was working for the most part.

Character: PO1 Jeem Roekil - Security officer
Stardate: 54367.3

Roekil noted that the two engineers were having a rough time stuffing the conduit back into place and stepped in to help. One benefit of being a Brikar, he thought to himself, lifting things is easy. With one hand he lifted the heavy conduit and stuffed it back into place.

"Oh! I just remembered! I should be insulting you, shouldn't I? You Tellerites, you like that, don't you? Well, let me see, umm... Oh! You're looking very... Fat! You look fat today, Sir! So, can you introduce me around? I love to meet new people!"

His mouth hung agape for several moments before the Captain stepped onto the Bridge and called for his report. The Tellarite breathed a sigh of relief and looked to the Bolian.

"Doctor, excuse me. I need to report in to the Captain. We will have to trade insults another time."

Commander Gaer stepped towards his Vulcan CO, grateful to have a reason to not engage the Bolian Doctor in any deep conversation. He inclined his head by way of a greeting.

"Captain, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I have received the reports from several Departments since my arrival and all appears within operational limits. We should be ready to depart spacedock on schedule tomorrow, sir."

Character: LT Surok - Chief Science Officer
Stardate: 54367.3
Ship - USS Guardian, Bridge

With an arched eyebrow the Vulcan watched as the conduit was pulled from his hands and stuffed back into the overhead console. He turned back to the Captain.
"Please excuse my appearance Captain. Lt Surok, Chief Science Officer, reporting Science Department will be ready well before our departure time. Due to the expanded refits I have found several meters of conduit that no longer serve any purpose other than to slow communication from the science consoles and the main computer core by .76 milliseconds."
Surok looked from the Security Officer to Operations Officer, "Assuming these gentlemen are not opposed to my completing my tasks."

Marek saw the obvious relief in his XO's face. His first thought was how Captain McTavish must have found it amusing that Marek's new first officer was Tellarite, but his response was completely within protocol.

"Captain, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I have received the reports from several Departments since my arrival and all appears within operational limits. We should be ready to depart spacedock on schedule tomorrow, sir."

"Excellent Commander, I am pleased to hear it." He turned to the Vulcan Lt.

"I am sure you can finish your task without anymore acrobatics?" He raised his own eyebrow.

Surok paused for only the slightest moment, "Aye Captain."

Marek nodded, then glanced back at Ensign Toka, who had finally stepped off the turbolift.

"Lt Talbert, Open a secure channel to Admiral Croft, have it sent to my readyroom." He glanced briefly around the room," As you were."
He then crossed the bridge and entered his readyroom. Once inside, he let out a deep breath, then slipped behind the desk. He notice as he did so that multiple PADD's were lined up in an orderly fashion on the desk, the title of each one visible. Toka is very organized

As the Captain left the bridge, Toka inwardly began to cuss herself out, This is your big chance, and your going to blow it. You looked like a complete idiot, just staring with your mouth slack. He probably thinks you are of below average intelligence. She wandered off the bridge, continuing her mental tirade.

OOC edited for grammar ugh

Commander Gaer stepped towards the turbolift, intent on heading down to Main Engineering to assist in the final work before the launch the next day... that is until he noticed Doctor Uroki hot on his heels. He stepped into the lift and glanced back over to her as she stepped inside after him.

"Sickbay, Doctor?"

Dr. Uroki nodded, smiling. "Oh yes, thank you Commander. I need to get back to reconfiguring the bio-beds so as to be more effective for our racially abundant crew. You know, most people don't know this, but the slightest error in a bio-bed scan can throw off an entire genome-pattern to register as something completely different. We can't have that now can we? Imagine being scanned and having the computer think you're a Klingon, or... Or a Bolian! That would be terrible as our hearts are on opposite sides! So, you can see the need for very meticulous calibration when dealing with racially diversity...."

Her voice trailed on as the turbolift hummed on for an eternity.

Commander Talbert moved to the communications station. Lieutenant? Well, the captain was new aboard his own ship, so one gaff was alright. But a vulcan didn't usually make them. Oh well.

As he moved to the console, the turbolift opened and an ensign exited looking around, his bearded face full of confusion and anxiety. Talbert recognized him from the files and motioned him over.

"Ensign Daniels, I assume," said the Ops manager. Daniels nodded.

"Yessir," replied the Communications man. "Forgive the confusion, I've never actually served on a starship befofe." Talbert nodded.

"Well time to start. The captain wants a secure channel opened to Admiral Croft, and piped into his ready room. I assume you can handle that." Daniels nodded and moved to his seat, activating his panel and putting his earpiece in place.

"USS Guardian to Starfleet Communications," he began, "Captain Marek to speak to Admiral Croft, Secure channel one Alpha one." There was a pause and a mumbling into his ear. He threw a switch and spoke into the microphone. "Captain Marek, Admiral Croft online and standing by."

OOC Ooops I just have Lt on the brain

Marek straightened his uniform, then tapped the console in front of him.

"Admiral, I understand you wished to speak to me?" On screen was Admiral Croft, a human with grey hair and beard. His face was crinkled with laugh lines, but one couldn't help but notice the determination in his eyes.

"Captain Marek, it's good to see you back out in the field." The Admiral smiled warmly, but it didn't seem to quite make it to his eyes. His face turned stern. "I would love to exchange pleasantries, but time is short. I wanted to explain a few things before you left dock." Marek found himself arching his eyebrow again in almost as many minutes.

"Yes, Admiral?"

"You may have noticed that you have been unable to access much information on the Guardian," Marek nodded, he had found it peculiar," Now that information will be available to you. You will find that some of the listed specifications don't match the capabilities of the individual systems. This ship has been refitted with a two-fold mission in mind. One that has been told to you, explore and survey the Gamma Quadrant. The second mission will be explained to you after your crew has finished it's shakedown." Croft paused, and Marek had the strange thought Why do I not trust this man?

"It is imperative that you mold this crew into a cohesive team. On the surface, it appears that someone has put together a group of..." Croft paused again, " misfits for lack of a better term. Each member of your crew is one of the top of their field, you're going to need the best where you're going." Another pause, then the Admiral smiled again, "I will keep in touch, I expect weekly status reports. One more thing, on a personal note, you will rendezvous with the Hartington, my son is on that ship. If you would check on him, see how he is doing, I would be grateful. I fear I have upset him and he no longer answers my messages." Marek had never had such strange thoughts about a commanding officer, but the man seemed to be leaving something very important out.

"Yes Admiral, I will 'Check up' on your son. I will, of course, give you weekly status reports. As that all Admiral?"

"That's all, Croft out." As the screen faded to black, Marek had one thought, I will be talking with your son, I have several questions for him.

OOC edit read it three times, still found a typo when I posted

Several hours later, Marek had only made it through about a third of the pile of PADD's on his desk. He laid down the PADD he was currently reading, and went to the replicator.

"Green Tea, warm." A faint hum, a flash of light, and a cup of tea appeared. Marek picked it up absentmindedly and returned to his desk. The Admiral wasn't joking, the ship was an enigma. The custom designed warp core was capable of putting out almost 30% more power than the ship could possibly use, although it was capped. Only Marek's order would allow the computer to set the warp core at maximum. The ship was also armed to the teeth, for an Excelsior. It could probably take on a Jem'Hadar battlecruiser, at least for twenty minutes or so. It did have all the requisite scientific equipment for the mission, and Marek had made it through the personnel files of the Senior staff that were on the ship. Croft was correct on that front as well, a collection of disciplinary actions, reassignments, and suspected mental health issues had been brought to his attention. Also, he had learned that when it came to their particular fields, his crew was exemplary. Marek checked the time, then yawned. Better get some rest, it will be another important day tomorrow He realized that he had never found out where his quarters were. Hoping they hadn't changed that from other Excelsior class ships, he left his readyroom.
