|
|
Location: Captain's Ready Room, USS Hartington
Stardate 53779.5
The Captain sat at his desk in the Ready Room recording his duty log as the door chimes rang. He stood and walked around the desk to greet his First and Second Officers as they came in. Calling out to the computer, he spoke aloud.
"Here they are... Computer, end log entry."
The Computer beeped in acknowledgment as it ceased recording his words. Brennon straightened his uniform jacket, his eyes closed for a moment with the gravity of what he was about to do. The door chimes rang again and he opened his eye, nodding. He let out the breath he didn't even know he was holding onto as he spoke again, this time towards the door.
"Come in." _________________

Qech was curious to say the least about why she was summoned from the bridge along with Calodan. She had to ring the door chime twice before the Captain answered.
odd, considering he called us here, she thought. When he finally called out for them to enter, Qech stepped into the room.
"You wanted to see us, Sir?" _________________

Calodan stood at attention beside the Commander. It was an odd request for himself and the XO to be called to the ready room at the same time, but seeing as he had been nominated as ship's Second Officer, he guessed this had something to do with the Command structure of the ship. _________________

"Commander, Lieutenant, thank you for joining me. If you'd please..."
The Captain motioned for the two of them to be seated as he walked back around the desk, taking his own seat. He settled in and looked from one officer to the other, not envying the situation before them. Like a bandage... he thought to himself in the moments before he delved into the heart of the matter.
"There is no easy way to say this so I'm just going to come out with it. As Captain it is often my responsibility to relay unfortunate news to members of my crew. I just finished speaking with Admiral Akaar back in the Alpha Quadrant. There has been an incident on the Trill Homeworld. It recently came to light that the Symbiosis Commission has been keeping the truth from your people regarding the nature of the joining. Apparently a much larger swath of your people are biologically capable of being joined, more like half. The unjoined have not taken the news very well... Rioting, acts of terrorism and violence against the joined segment of the population. Culminating with the deaths of many Symbionts. The Commission has put an hold on all pending joinings until the Symbiont population has rebuilt itself and all currently joined Symbionts will be returned to the pools at the end of their current lifetimes. There are reports of an experimental treatment that can safely unjoin a host from the symbiont, in fact the President of Trill has undergone the procedure herself, but the Commission is recommending that all currently Joined Hosts live out their lives as normal."
The Captain paused for several moments, allowing the gravity of the situation to sink into their minds. He offered them a warm and friendly smile as he continued.
"I want you both to know that you have my leave to take as much personal time as you need to deal with the situation. We're still near enough to the Wormhole that we can return to DS9 if you desire. The Counselors are also available should you need to talk about what's happened... as am I. If there is anything I can do for you, either of you, please let me know." _________________

Qech sat rigid in her chair, and raised a hand to her mouth as he finished speaking. Being that one of her past hosts was on the commission, she knew about the real joining ratios. She also understood why she was told never to mention it. But she never expected anything like this could actually happen. Her first terrified thoughts went to her family, and her fiance back home. She had an overwhelming need to speak with them. Despite all of this, she decided to remain aboard the Hartington. She had a duty to the ship, and as XO she had to stay, no matter what personal matters cropped up. She knew that she was making this sacrifice the moment she joined Starfleet, and that her family would understand, as they always did.
She stood, albeit a little shakily, and exchanged looks of sympathy with Calodan before turning back to the Captain. "Sir, I choose to remain on board, if that's alright. I really do need to contact my family however, if I may be dismissed." _________________

"Sir, I choose to remain on board, if that's alright. I really do need to contact my family however, if I may be dismissed."
The Captain looked at her with more sympathy in his eyes than seemed possible. He was himself nearly in tears, his eyes wet with tears that were not ready to fall, though his voice carried none of the sorrow in his heart.
"I'm glad you'll be remaining with us, Commander, but you cannot be dismissed. We have other business to discuss." _________________

Qech looked slightly confused, but didn't argue, and remained in her seat.
"Yes Sir" she said simply. Her voice was a bit shaky, but for the most part she kept her composure and waited. _________________

Calodan sank back in his chair and looked down at his hands....they were shaking. He rose to his feet after the Commander did. "Sir, thank you for delivering this info to us personally. Like the Commander, I would prefer to remain onboard the Hartington. I would appreciate if the Commander and then myself could get some priority comm-time to communicate back home and ascertain the situation."
"We have other business to discuss."
At that, he sat back in the seat the Captain originally had offered him and attempted to stop the shaking of his hands. _________________

"Of course, Lieutenant. You both may have whatever you need to communicate with your families..."
At this juncture, the Captain didn't want to seem insensitive, but it was clear his Second Officer had misunderstood him. After a moment he looked to Calodan and said simply,
"You're dismissed, Mr. Calodan. Contact me should you need anything at all." _________________

"Thank you Captain." He stood and walked out of the ready room, still slightly in a haze at the news. _________________

Brennon waited for Calodan to exit the room, his eyes reluctant to settle on Qech. After nearly a minute of silence, when it looked as though Qech herself would speak up to ask what was going on he finally continued.
"Commander... Davynn, I have some very bad news. Admiral Akaar informed me that your fiance, Taj, was among those killed in one of the attacks. His Symbiont was taken from him and later found dead as well. I'm... I'm so sorry Davynn." _________________

Qech suddenly felt cold, like someone had poured a bucket of icy water down the back of her uniform. She unconsciously brought a shaking hand up to her face as the Captain's words drilled slowly into her mind.
She stared at him in shock for what could have been an eternity; a silent void swelling between them, ready to pop. When she finally spoke, it was with a hoarse whisper: "But... But I just spoke to him. We talked just the other night..." her voice trailed off as her mind crashed headlong into the truth, like breaking waves on cold, scabrous rocks. Her eyes swelled with burning tears, but she fought them back, desperately holding on to her last shred of dignity.
The first Officer stood up slowly, half-expecting her legs to give way under her weight and looked into the sympathetic eyes of her CO. "Sir..." she said, gathering all the professionalism she could muster. "May I be excused?" _________________

Did I look like this? He asked himself as he watched the reaction to the striking revelation play itself out on his First Officer's face. It broke his heart to watch another have to go through the same situation. Memories flooded to the surface of the last months of the war, to hearing the news of his own wife's death. He closed his eyes for a moment, shaking his head as though that would rid his mind of the images. I still have a long way to go...
"May I be excused?"
The Captain's head bobbed up and down for a moment before the words escaped his mouth, his voice horse at first before clearing it.
"Ye... ahem... yes, Commander, of course you can. I'll be here if you need anything." _________________

Qech headed for the door the moment she had permission to go, stifling back the tears that threatened to flood down her cheeks. Her face was set and determined as she stepped out onto the bridge, walking quickly past Calodan and the other bridge officers. She kept her head down-turned, trying to hold back the cry of grief that scratched at the inside of her throat. It tried to tear itself free as she entered the turbolift, but she fiercely restrained it again.
How could this have happened? Why would anyone do this? Why? She had to grasp the railing tightly to keep a hold of herself as the close confinement of the lift swirled around her. Her heart was racing. Her throat burned. She felt dizzy and sick, but she stepped off of the turbo lift in a proud determination to get to her quarters before anyone saw her.
The hallway stretched out in front of her, dipping and swerving as though the ship itself were suddenly made of rubber, and someone was manipulating it like stretched clay. Suddenly it arched down, further and further, with a splash of sharp cold coming from seemingly nowhere.
Darkness took her before her head even hit the floor. _________________

Calodan watched Qech walk past him, and even though his own mind was a beehive of questions and activity, he could tell she was more upset. Before he could say anything, she was in the turbolift.
He knew his next step was beyond his duties, and probably even beyond the bounds of the basic friendship he had formed with the ships XO over poker, but he decided to do it anyways. He tapped his commbadge: "Lt Calodan to Counselor Zeara. Commander Qech and I have both been given news of the unrest on Trill and she seemed particularly....distraught. She left the bridge in a turbolift just a few minutes ago. I was wondering if you would check on her, she may need your services. " _________________
