I agree with you on the thought that 5 isn't enough... but I was talking about it with my wife last night and we thought that more than 5 would be just a "characters I like" kind of deal and I wanted to compare the best of the best.

For me it:

Commander Riker
Captain Sisko
Chancellor Martok
Gul Dukat
Commander Tucker

Truth be told there are others. I absolutely love Legate Damar, Lieutenant Commander Worf, Garak (who very nearly made the list) and many many others.

Scotty - The original "Fix it with ducttape" guy. "I canna bend the laws of physics Cap'n!"
Trip Tucker - His Southern accent and attitude fit with my upbringing
Data - I loved watching his transition from "furniture" to "tin-man" to human being. I will admit to getting teary when they killed him in Nemesis.
Jadzia Dax - Terry Farrell was FANTASTIC to look at and her smartassed attitude was great on screen. The multiple lives aspect of her character was compelling. Ezri Dax...not so much!
Tom Paris - He was a total smartass but fantastic at his job. I feel his character really grew up through the whole of Voyager
