Stardate: 49422.13 - Ref: 2372 - during the war
Location: Starbase 331
Reporting as: Lt. Commander Talbert
The listening post was recovering. A surprise attack by a joint Cardassian/Jem'Hadar attack squadron had just been thwarted as they attempted to destroy the antannae array that made up 2/3 of the station's outward skin. Only the timely intervention of the USS Lakota and its support fleet, travelling to DS9 on a priority mission, stopped the untimely demise of the starbase and it's personnel. Nearly 120 photon torpedoes were launched during the fight, and the station sustained extensive damage, despite the fleet's intervention.
The new top secret shield modifications helped considerably. Somehow the poloron beams were not penetrating as easily anymore, but the damage was still there. And the damn leathernecks, as Talbert called the Cardies, they were tough enough.
Talbert moved through the smoking command deck, pulling debris off an ensign he vaguely recognized as Pardell through the burn marks. His heart went out to his staff as he remembered how many were all ready dead because of the Jem'Hadar. Bastards, he thought. How many more? Tears began to well in his eyes. Other staffers were moving around now, amidst the groans and calls for help, but he felt helpless and frozen, unable to move for the carnage around him.
Somehow Talbert pulled himself out of the miasma. He found a quiet corner. Something snapped in his heart. No more! No softness again! He gave in to the staff once when they begged for the chance to get to the Gamma quadrant, and he got them all killed! NO MORE! He pulled a deep reserve from within himself and angrily wiped away the tears.
"Dammit, you're a Starfleet officer! Snap it up, mister!" he told himself. When he turned from the wall his face was set, his mind made up. The groans of the wounded, and the blaring of ship-to-station communications no longer dug into his heart. Only the firm resolve to be the strongest, most professional officer he could be! From here on out he would work out, driving softness from his flesh as well as his spirit. He would learn his job, and make sure that his staff knew theirs, and he would never be caught by surprise again! _________________
