Location: Deck 2, Near Lieutenant Commander Qech's Quarters
Characters: Captain Brennon and Doctor Kiv

Captain Brennon leaned against the bulkhead, a hand over his mouth as the Doctor explained the situation to him. The world around them seemed to fade away as he listened to his Chief Medical Officer's speech.

"... and while I've not had the chance to look over the data at length, I'm reasonably certain that the mental trauma caused by the news of Trill combined with the strain on her body due to the pregnancy caused a temporary imbalance in several key neurotransmiters. A few days off her feet and she sh
ould be good as new, baring anything we're not expecting."

Brennon nodded and lowered his hand from his face. This all feels too familiar... He straightens his uniform jacket and clears his throat

"Thank you for the update, Doctor. I'd like to be informed the moment she's ready for visitors."

"Of course Captain."

A quiet moment passed between the two, lingering several seconds before the Doctor excused herself.

"I'll be in Sickbay sir. Don't worry, the moment anything changes you'll be the first to know."

He nodded once as the Doctor turned away. Moments passed with him alone in the hallway. It's different... she isn't... she's not Ailis. David took in several breaths to compose himself before the persona of The Captain reasserted itself. His eyes opened and he stepped back into the nearby lift.

"Main Bridge."

The lift hummed as it brought him back to the center of his universe. What should be the center.

Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington
Character: Lieutenant Bethany Woods

Lieutenant Woods stepped onto the Bridge as McTavish began his recording.

"Computer, record. Stardate 53781.56: Ensign McTavish has relieved LT Calodan as Duty Officer. End recording. Ensign Phell report? Whats happening on my Ship?"

She looked around, somewhat confused. She looked to Lieutenant Calodan.

"What's going on, Sir?"

Calodan decided not to argue with the young man. He stepped aside from the command chair and to a console at the back of the bridge. There he input a series of commands and rapidly typed a log entry to the computer,

"Lieutenant Woods, I have been relieved of duty by Ensign McTavish. He believes I am under duress and unfit for duty. I am reporting to sickbay for a full physical."

He then stepped into the turbolift. "Sickbay."

The tension on the bridge was electric as McTavish watched LT Calodan enter the turbolift. The Command Chair no longer looked inviting, more like a monster waiting to bite.
"LT Woods please take your station."
McTavish thought to himself 'Well ive gone a grabbed the bull by the tender bits. Best hang on and enjoy the ride. The crash is going to hurt.'

Uvek waited for the turbolift doors to open. Lt. Calodan exited, looking more pale than ever as evidenced by the darker spots on his neck standing out in stark relief against his skin.

"Lt. Calodan, please forgive my absence. I felt compelled to check on Commander Qech. However, I extend my condolences to you for the trouble on your homeworld. If I can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to ask."

She eyed McTavish for a few moments, thinking to herself... almost weighing her options... before stepping across the Bridge and manning the Ops station. Her voice was cold, steely almost angry as she responded to McTavish's order.

"Aye sir."

"Thank you Lieutenant. In the future, I suggest not leaving your post unless ordered to, duty before personal issues. That aside, I am personally glad you checked on the Commander, and am about to do so myself. I appreciate your offer of assistance. I suggest you report to the Bridge, Ensign McTavish has just assumed command."

After a nod, he took the short walk to Sickbay. "Lt. Calodan reporting. I have been declared unfit for duty by the Bridge Watch Officer and am here to submit to a full physical as per Starfleet Regulation 103.6." Before waiting for a nurse or doctor to reply he walked over to the biobed the Commander lay on and sat beside her.

Uvek entered the turbolift. He accepted Lt. Calodan's admonishing without rancor. As a Tal Shiar officer he had freedom of action, and never thought twice about following his agenda. But, he was Federation now. Another adjustment to be made, he thought, followed by: Ensign McTavish has assumed command? What is going on up there? Surely the captain has returned by now.

No matter, the turbolift slid toward the command deck and he prepared himself for whatever he might find. Gods, he thought almost aloud, do not let me find no senior officers on the bridge. Years in Romulan service, followed by months of Federation training did NOT qualify him for even a brief stint in command of a starship. Hnaev, that is the last thing he needed!

Location: Sickbay, USS Hartington
Character: Doctor Kiv

Doctor Kiv stepped into Sickbay, by the look of her sudden deceleration she must have been going at a near run down the ship's halls. She steps towards Doctors Newell and Azmay, near to Commander Qech's biobed and takes her chart from a nearby nurse. She looked it over, watching the Counselor talk with her patient. She handed the chart back to the nurse and walked past the other two Doctors, giving them both a squeeze on the shoulder as if to say good job. She moved next to Qech, tricorder out and scanning as she spoke.

"I see we're a little more awake now, how are you feeling, Commander-Doctor?"

Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington
Character: Captain David Brennon

Captain Brennon stepped off of the turbolift at the same time as Lieutenant Uvek did on the opposite side of the Bridge. Without looking up he called out, expecting Lieutenant Calodan.

"Report Mr. Calodan?"

Qech looked over at Calodan as he sat down. She smiled weakly at him, but otherwise said nothing. There was nothing either of them needed to say, and she knew it. The pain she knew he had to be experiencing was beyond words. She gently placed a hand on his forearm in an effort to communicate her empathy, and knew then that this experience was something they would always have in common... Whether they liked it or not.

"I see we're a little more awake now, how are you feeling, Commander-Doctor?"

Qech looked up when Dr. Kiv arrived and gave a tired, half-hearted smile. "Not the best I've ever felt, Doctor-Doctor." She felt drained, both from her fall and from the exhausting effort of crying. By the time Dr. Kiv arrived she was spent. Even her tears seemed to have gone dry.

"I'm very tired though. The counselor has been keeping me awake."

She smiled at the counselor, and then looked back at Dr. Kiv, suddenly remembering something. When she spoke there was urgency in her voice. "Nothing went wrong with the baby, did it?"

Calodan squeezed Qech's hand on his forearm with his other hand and returned the smile, though his eyes weren't in it. No words needed to be communicated, but he decided to say it anyways. "I'll stay here Commander."

Ensign McTavish Turned as the turbo lifts both opened, Seeing the Captain a second before LT Uvek.

Quote:
"Report Mr. Calodan?"

McTavish slammed to attention.
"Captain, all stations normal, all conditions normal, with the exception of LT Calodan. I entered the bridge and found him on the verge of shock. I assumed Duty Officer. I believe the Lieutenant reported to Sickbay." McTavish let out in a rush. His spine itched but he refused to twitch, McTavish kept his eyes locked 6 inches above the Captain's left shoulder.

"Nothing went wrong with the baby, did it?"

Kiv shook her head quickly to disuade any thoughts to the the contrary

"No, nothing at all. At the moment I'm convinced that it was simply stress related, the news of your homeworld and... and your fiance. I'm going to relieve you of duty for the next 48 hours however, just for observation. You may also want to consider scheduling a session with the Counselor here."

The Doctor turned her tricorder on Lieutenant Calodan, scanning over the man in sweeping arcs.

"Why don't you start from the beginning, Lieutenant?"

Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington

The Captain's eyes narrowed as he looked towards the command chair and the Ensign that until very recently occupied it. He took several steps forward and then turned towards his Ready Room. He stopped at the threshold and then called over his shoulder before vanishing into his office.

"Lieutenant Woods, you have the conn. Mr. McTavish... a word."

"Aye, Captain"
McTavish turned and parade perfect followed the Captain to the ready room.

OOC: Starfleet Regulation 103.6 is a number I made up out of thinair. I don't know the actual reg code, couldnt find it on the internets.

Location: Sickbay, USS Hartington
Character: Lt. Calodan

Calodan cringed at the Doctor's tricorder sweeps. Like most Starfleet officers, he avoided physicals like the plague. "Doctor, Ensign McTavish felt I was unfit for duty and decided to invoke Starfleet Regulation 103.6 and relieve me of command and take over. As the regulation states, an officer relieved is to immediately report to sickbay for a full physical and psychological evaluation. I chose not to contest his use of regulations and reported to you for my examination. That being said, I am fine and I believe the Ensign acted prematurely. I am a bit..concerned..because of the unrest on Trill, but I was capable of carrying out my duty. I entered my protest in the ship's logs before reporting."

He paused to take a breath and noticed the Doctor's eyes, having slightly widened at the telling of the story. "It isn't as bad as it sounds. The Ensign was within Regs, if not within common practice. If you could just give me a quick exam as required by the logs, I would like to stay with the Commander. I believe we have some things to discuss."

Qech breathed a sigh of relief, sinking back into her pillow again. She wasn't going to argue. She knew better than to pretend everything was okay, and that she didn't need to stay. 48 hours was going to be enough time to get over the shock; but she knew her trials were just beginning. And the Qech symbiont would undoubtedly keep the memories of this pain to be experienced by those who received it generations after her.... If anyone ever hosted the Qech symbiont again.
