I'll get into exactly how my interpretation of how Star Trek does this as well as a more apt description of the title Bridge Watch Officer means when I'm less tired. Star Trek does it differently from the Navy, but not all that much to be honest. There are more similarities than differences from my knowledge. Sure, the show had to dumb it down as it were because no one wants to get into the minutia during an hour long sci fi drama. anyhow, I'll get into it a little better tomorrow.
