Im a bit confused at this point on the Guardian. Dont pretty much all Starships with a Science department have dedicated Sensor Arrays for the strict use of the Science Department. Arrays that dont cross the Navigational Arrays, The Tactical Arrays (Fire control and what not), along with several Other Arrays used by different stations? And shouldnt there be plenty of power to go around so that all the Sensor Arrays can be used at once? If not thats alright im just confused.

Secondary. On the Hartington each department is broken down so you pretty much know their primary job discriptions:

Quote:
Chief of Operations:The Chief Operations Officer has the primary responsibility of ensuring that ship functions, such as the use of the lateral sensor array, do not interfere with one and another. S/he must prioritize resource allocations, so that the most critical activities can have every chance of success. If so required, s/he can curtail shipboard functions if s/he thinks they will interfere with the ship's current mission or routine operations.
The Chief Operations Officer oversees the Operations department, and is a member of the senior staff.

Quote:

Chief Science Officer: The Chief Science Officer is responsible for all the scientific data the ship/facility collects, and the distribution of such data to specific section within the department for analysis. S/he is also responsible with providing the ship's captain with scientific information needed for command decisions.
S/he also is a department head and a member of the Senior Staff and responsible for all the crew members in her/his department and duty rosters.

I only post these because up to this point in the story (approaching and going into orbit around an undiscovered Class M world) Im having difficulty finding where I fit in. Im not trying to say I should be involved in every story line and im happy not to be...But if Scientific Discovery is part of the mission...
An Idea I have come up with is this: The Hartington, at the moment, has the entire science department as NPC (The Science Officer is away at the moment). Maybe it would be better if the Guardian was also all NPC and move Surok to a position where he would be of more use. Just trying to get things figured out.

Okay, I'll try to answer this to the best of my ability. First, much of my experience is TNG and DS9. TNG Hardly ever referenced a science officer, so my first instinct is to go to Ops for Sensor info. DS9 Use Dax quite a bit for a science officer, but didn't seem to know what an Ops officer was. I have been going with the idea that if I want a basic sensor run down, it's ops. I want scientific analysis, I go the science officer.

Second, I know you haven't had much yet with the story line, my intent is for that to change down the road. If things go according to plan, you'll be busy, and for the long hall.

Third I'm human, and I'm willing to be flexible, we can shuffle things around if you like, I know it's hard to wait for a chance to participate. I would recommend, however, holding out just a bit longer, see if you like how things come out.

I will say this, I have tried to lay out the Guardian the same as the Hartington, and I have a Science officer there, so they aren't all NPC's, admittedly he has one post but still, he's not intended to be an NPC.

I dont need anything shuffled around and im not worried about participation, I was just confused.

That pretty much clears up the second question I had.

Sorry. Wasn't trying to step on anyone's toes. I just responded to the captain. I agree with him as far as TNG. Lt Commander Data at Ops always gave initial sensor information, and breakdowns on immediate needs, while science seemed to do the detail and background work. I was also going on that assessment.
I simply assumed that upon approach of any foreign body the full scope of the ship would be preparing for any issues, and alter it's posture once in orbit.

Didn't mean to walk into anyone's territory.

Ok no worries, my mistake and all that. Guess I need to watch TNG over again. and ignore that Data is a special case to replace Spock (thinking back on it, I dont remember Any science officers on the bridge in TNG, everything came from Data). About the Sensors though? On that im still confused.

This is how I see the Sensor systems of the Guardian, I go to this page the Uvek brought up, (I found it on google, but he posted it)

7.1 SENSOR SYSTEMS

Long range and navigation sensors are located behind the main deflector dish, to avoid sensor "ghosts" and other detrimental effects consistent with main deflector dish millicochrane static field output. Lateral sensor pallets are located around the rim of the entire Starship, providing full coverage in all standard scientific fields, but with emphasis in the following areas:

1.

Astronomical phenomena
2.

Planetary analysis
3.

Remote life-form analysis
4.

EM scanning
5.

Passive neutrino scanning
6.

Parametric subspace field stress (a scan to search for cloaked ships)
7.

Thermal variances
8.

Quasi-stellar material

Each sensor pallet (twenty in all) can be interchanged and re-calibrated with any other pallet on the ship.

Warp Current sensor: This is an independent subspace graviton field-current scanner, allowing the starship to track ships at high warp by locking onto the eddy currents from the threat ship's warp field, then follow the currents by using multi-model image mapping.

7.2 TACTICAL SENSORS

There are twenty independent tactical sensors on Excelsior Class Starships. Each sensor automatically tracks and locks onto incoming hostile vessels and reports bearing, aspect, distance, and vulnerability percentage to the tactical station on the main bridge. Each tactical sensor is approximately 50% efficient against ECM, and operates modestly in particle flux nebulae - measuring somewhere between 40-50% accuracy on primary and secondary scans.

I bet that cleared it all up didn't it? My point being is there are a lot of sensors available.

In early 2368, when investigating the Phoenix Cluster, the lateral sensors of the USS Enterprise-D were booked solid for planetary observation.(TNG: "The Game")

I throw this into the ring to demonstrate my thought that when approaching a planet, I tend to believe that sensor arrays are on peak performance looking for problems, threats, etc. The initial sensor readout from ops takes all those allocated sensors to determine an initial picture of the planet/spatial environment. Hence, once the sensors have made that assessment, and in accordance with COO's parameters, the sensor arrays are then RE-allocated to their various functions.

Anyway, just a game...
