Commander Qech and Ambassador Rolen sat in annoying silence inside the Pike. Qech waited, desperately wishing that the Doctor would come and alleviate some of the annoyance that the constant attention of Rolen provided... maybe he'd focus on someone else for a while.

Qech put her head in her hands, trying to block out the ever-smiling face of the Vorta beside her.

He keeps staring at me! I must have done something very wrong in a past life to deserve this... No. Nothing I could have done could possibly have been bad enough.

Uvek left the shuttlepod on deck 20 and moved through the ship. He pressed his combadge. "Uvek to Commander Qech. In accordance with the captain's wishes, I will be onboard very shortly. There is something I need to prepare in my quarters. Please stand by to launch in 10 minutes."

Nine minutes later, Uvek was entering the shuttlebay. He carried a bag over his shoulder, along with a sidearm. Upon entering the Pike, he placed the bag in a locker, and secured his weapon in the security locker.

He moved forward and greeted the members present. Finally, he turned to Ambassador Rolen. "Mr. Ambassador," he said, his face neutral, "I appreciate your assistance in this event." Many crewmen had mentioned his activities to the security chief, with a mix of incredulous gratitude and distrust.

Qech was slightly surprised when she received Uvek's transmission, but she did not portray that to Rolen. She figured it out very quickly, and she couldn't help but let a small smile creep across her face. Rolen wasn't thrown off balance by the news of an extra crew member at all by the looks of things. Although for a split second she thought she saw his upper lip twitch. He couldn't have been pleased to find it was Uvek, of all people, who would be ruining his foyer through the gamma quadrant with the Trill Commander; someone he obviously viewed as his brand new very best friend.

"Welcome aboard, Lt. Uvek" she said when he arrived, the slightest hint of relief in her voice. "When the good Doctor arrives we can set off."

Oliver picked up his Medipack, and began his journey to the shuttle bay.
He was glad to be getting away from the ship, and all of the disaster's that had begun to unfurl upon it. The transmission was not too surprising, giving the CMO's current situation.
As he stepped into the shuttle lounge, he could see the Pike in situate, and walked towards it. As he stepped in, he nodded to the commander, the lieutenant and the ambassador, who glared at him, making him nervous.
As he placed his case down by his chair, he felt unusually skeptic about the mission.
Why was the crew so quiet?
It occurred to him that it may have been the events of the past couple of days, not to mention the commander's unfortunate episode, but then who could blame her.
"Ready when you are!", he said cheerfully. The remark was received coldly by all. The smile went from Oliver's face, and he coughed.
This should be fun.

Uvek nodded to Dr. Newell. "Doctor, welcome to the team."

To the trained eye, Newell was clearly uncomfortable. He seemed nervous all the time, and unsure of himself. Well, that's a personal matter, thought the Rihannsu officer. He'll have to deal with that on his own.

Qech had been running the pre-flight checks when the Doctor arrived, and greeted him over her shoulder as she worked. "Welcome aboard Doctor. As you can see we're heavy one crew member, in case we run into trouble I should think. I hope you're not claustrophobic." She smiled, which probably couldn't be seen from over her shoulder, and continued preparing the Pike for what she hoped wouldn't be too long a voyage. She sure as hell didn't want the Guardian running into one of those mines if she could help them avoid it.

Uvek settled into the co-pilot's chair. He was a well qualified pilot in Federation shuttles and smaller vessels due to his experiences, but he also relished the chance to focus on the Ambassador and support the commander. Besides, if anything happened, he wanted to be free to leave the controls at a moment's notice.

He smiled at the Commander and said "Ready when you are Ma'am."

Ambassador Rolen sat in one of the side seats, at the controls of a deactivated panel. He sat looking from person to person and then around the cramped quarters. He laughed inwardly -- only a light chuckle escaped, honest -- at the Commander's comment.

"...I hope you're not claustrophobic."

"I don't know, Commander... Vorta a quite fond of small enclosed spaces, I believe it has something to do with our primate ancestors. Though I do have to say these are dreadful conditions for us to be in for so long. I wonder why the Captain didn't assign our team to one of the Runabouts..."

The Ambassador let his words linger in the air for a moment before shrugging them off and sitting back, watching the crew of the Pike at work. His eyes eventually settled on Lieutenant Uvek, whom he continued to smile at as the shuttle launched out of the bay and into open space.

"I wonder why the Captain didn't assign our team to one of the Runabouts..."

Qech tried not to revert to rolling her eyes at the ambassador's statement. Thankfully she managed to control her sarcasm and gave him what she considered to be a straightforward answer.

"We don't have to haul any cargo." She said simply. She then turned to Uvek. "I'm going to send our message out. Hopefully the Guardian will receive it and respond in short order. We shouldn't have put too much distance between them and the Hartington. In the meantime, keep a close watch on the sensors. I don't want to run into any of those mines in a shuttlecraft of all things."

Qech piloted the craft smoothly through space, still thankful that she had the Doctor and Uvek to offer some non-Vorta company. Suddenly she felt ashamed of the thought.

Am I annoyed by who he is or what he is?

She shook her head and sat back in the pilot's chair, letting the computer do the work, and unconsciously placing a hand on her stomach. Maybe I haven't given him a fair chance... I just wish he'd stop staring at me.

The security chief smiled at the commander. "A wise course, Commander. In regards to the scans, I will of course watch carefully, however, it is unlikely I will be effective as we have no idea what to watch for in the first place."

He like Commander Qech's thought process. It would be a curious experiment to join her symbiont with a Romulan. He frowned and put himself into his work. Careful Suran, you are thinking like a member of the Tal Shiar science department!

"A wise course, Commander. In regards to the scans, I will of course watch carefully, however, it is unlikely I will be effective as we have no idea what to watch for in the first place."

Qech turned her head to look at Uvek, still keeping her hand rested against her belly. "If you want a realistic, if slightly pessimistic point of view: even if we knew exactly what we were looking for, we probably still wouldn't find it. If the Hartington's sensors couldn't pick up on it, we're certainly not likely to." She clapped a hand on his shoulder, giving a sardonic smile. "But I don't like to be pessimistic."

The Commander was silent for a time after that, manning the helm or staring forward out into space; her mind obviously adrift. She decided to take the computer off of the controls for awhile, just to occupy her mind with thoughts that didn't lead back to her late fiance... But it seemed like all her thoughts did, no matter what. Suddenly, she was reminded of something, and swung around in her chair to face Dr. Newell.

"You know Doctor, I never did get the chance to thank you, and Lieutenant Uvek as well" she said, gesturing to the Romulan. "A few months back, when I..." she paused, obviously at a loss for how to phrase it. She decided not to. "Well, you were the first ones there. And I don't know how long I would have been there otherwise. There aren't too many people walking around the Officer's quarters during Alpha shift." She smiled warmly, if a little sadly to them both. "I owe you both. I just wanted to make sure you knew how much I appreciated your help that day."

"Not at all, Commander." Uvek responded. "I am grateful to have been available, and that your pregnancy is progressing satisfactorily. In truth, it is Dr. Newell who truly did the most. I am a Security man, not a doctor." While the Commander and Doctor Newell exchanged pleasantries, he turned to Ambassador Rolen.

"Mr. Ambassador, is there anything you can add about the phenomenon we have encountered? Has the Dominion come across this issue before?"

He watched Rolen not entirely sure that, despite his help during the crisis and his lack of activity over the past 3 months, he was entirely prepared to trust him.

Rolen shook his head and looked towards Lieutenant Uvek, his smile never faltering.

"I am sorry to report, Lieutenant, that Dominion vessels have not encountered this particular phenomena before. We've heard of such things before -- things like engines mysteriously coming to a halt for no reason or hull sections being blown out for no reason -- but we dismissed it as superstitious back talk. This region of space is full of such rumors... though it seems that there is more to the rumors than meets the eye. It is most likely some sort of pirate activity or the remnants of an old rivalry -- long forgotten weapons of war."

Fascinating, thought Uvek. On what his Terran companions would call a hunch, he adjusted the sensors to include tachyon pulses. Hopefully, if there was a cloaked device still floating out there, he would pick it up. He set the sensors to include all spectrums and electromagnetic emenations, coupling them with the tachyon pulse, and sat back to wait. A moment later, he adjusted magnometric scans just slightly out of sync with known frequencies, hoping the vibrating magnetic waves would stir something up. It was a long shot but with a long voyage ahead of them, it couldn't hurt.

"Commander," he said, turning to his pilot. "I am familiar with cloaking technologies of the Empire. If the device we impacted is cloaked, it is possible that there will be residual tetryon particles. It is curious that the primary weapons of the Tal'harton use Tetryon radiation as well. It is likely we encountered a cloaked weapon. I have adjusted our sensors accordingly. It may be prudent to contact the Hartington and let them know the same."
