Hi all,
I was just wondering what possessed us to pick our characters? For example..I chose Romulan for 2 main reasons really...
1) It is really an unknown race, despite the writings on the internet and some novels, and allows me to flex my creativity and still hold to the parameters of what IS known about them. I don't know of any Romulan in the Federation, so in a way, I am being a ground breaker here!
2) I've always been interested in Romulus. Despite their projected image as weak or retreating, I have always known their technology and weapons were formidable and they retreat to preserve secrecy and their culture. They have no reservations about using violent and destructive techniques to achieve their goal. They brought Cloaking technology to the quadrant, and their disruptors have many times caused problems. Let's not forget that they are vulcanoids, stronger than they look; they have the same mental capacity, but use emotions.
I love the Romulans! How about you? What was the deciding factor for your chararcter? _________________

I like the concept of a Trill. Many lives, but always with that jarring transition. I made Arjim half-human because some of the most interesting Trek characters (to me anyways) have had some sort of racial mixing. Spock, Worf, even Data and his quest to become more human. _________________

I agree with the racial mixing comment, hence Croft. I like the idea of a telepath, but didn't want it to be the defining characteristic of my character.
As for Marek, half the reason I chose Vulcan was I felt it would make for some interesting interactions with the rest of the crew. I also find the whole Vulcan idea fascinating, strong, passionate but they restrain it, another dose of telepathy. Pon Fahr is just crazy(I know I probably misspelled that)
Brin Vek, I really like the whole Bajoran story line, wanted a taste of that. Maybe one of these day's I'll pick him back up.
??? I just can't explain the next one yet, haven't started it...hehehe _________________

I started with the Job. Bridge Watch Officer. Be really good at one or two things, well maybe three or five. Know just enough about everything else that you can carry a conversation or enough to lend a hand to the experts. McTavish is the type to be spending his off duty hours with a PO3 deep in the replicator plant watching the PO do routine maintenance to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Once I had the job firmly in mind, Liam just kind of birthed himself. At first he tried to have a Irish Accent. I just stared him down. I was not going to try writing pages and pages of posts with an Irish accent. He went off and sulked a little bit but when he came back he had that glint in his eye. Fine. No Irish, then Klingon. Ok so when im making a post with 5 or 6 other pages open to figure out what Klingon to toss in but thats ok.
The reason I havent filled out his time as an exchange student is that its still liquid and changing. I know he was in a Klingon school for 4 months and spent 2 months traveling home on a Klingon ship. Well, less traveling home and more a 2 month patrol along the Romulan/Klingon/Federation Neutral zones. And I know he received the news of his family at Wolf 359 during that 2 months. A teenager + The Volatile Nature or a Klingon Ship + Grief + terror and trajedy + A Mother that blames him for not making the funeral services = Someone who was no longer going to allow the Universe get him down. He truly finds joy in doing simple things. And he is loyal to those around him to a fault.
Ughh that was long winded. (yeah i know so what else is new ) _________________

Quite simple... I wanted to see how my own race would do in the Star Trek milieu. |

Well, Azmay, so far so good. Well done. I like the idea and the avatar has given your character a real flair!
Uvek and Koa will have a time together soon. I'm going to start a security training thread soon and get koester, smith, koa and some NPCs into a scenario together.
Great input folks! I like the thought process and it helps us to get more tied in.
Keep it going.....

Me, I've always loved the Trill. It's an open opportunity to basically make several characters and put them all under one roof. But Qech specifically came about as a way to connect my character with Tom's somehow to make it easier for me to get into character. To be honest, when the Simm was still in its infancy he had to talk me into playing. (Online RP was new to me and I wasn't sure I liked the idea). Creating Qech just gave me a hook to start with so that I could dive into the character, and hopefully get the feel of her personality quickly. Drawing her helped me to get to know her better as well, because I do that with all of my characters for pretty much everything. It just adds a new dimension to them somehow when you can see their faces. Now I love her, and I'm very glad he managed to talk me into playing. _________________

ME TOO...except for selfish reasons! Without you, there would be no Uvek avatar! LOL
truth be told, I think everyone is kicking their characters up a notch. By the next mission/time jump, I think we will be a pretty good crew! _________________

For me, it was just cause I liked the idea of mental powers. Always been a fascination of mine... so it fit. Sadly though, I don't think my character is much use other than in her current post.... and my character for the Gaurdian hasn't gotten up and going because my computer... *sigh* let's just say it has issues right now... like not working. (Using my computer at work to type this...) Actually looking into a way I can either create a new character or somehow manage to make my current character more interesting.... but that must come when I can get my sad little station at home working.
.... i think I'm actually the last one without an avatar.... *sigh* of all the times for my computer to act up!!!! _________________

Don't be discouraged. It will all come together! You have a very interesting character! If I were you, I would ask the captain about being the 'DEANNA TROI' of the Hartington! She was in the thick of things using her capabilities to guide the captain in determining the hidden feelings and attitudes behind beings.
That can be VERY important and put you on the front lines in many scenarios....YOU ARE JUST GETTING GOING. Don't give up yet.
It is something you just work at. Start secondary lines like the Christmas party, and join in as many as you can. Also, more character stories never hurt.
Just some thoughts! Be encouraged, I know the captain always encourages us, and this is too much fun to give up on, weak computer or no! _________________

I had actually just finished writing her a PM giving a few ideas i had to spice things up for her in game. I finished and then came back to this post to talk about my characters and then I saw this. I have to love the timing about that.
Anyhow, why did I pick Captain Brennon?
Well when I was coming up with the storyline for the Hartington I decided I needed a strong Captain, kind of an obvious decision I think. The Captains have to be paragons of Federation values. I thought back to the various Captains and thought about what I loved about each one.
Kirk had the balls to do what needed to be done and he did it without any issue. He was the quintessential Starfleet Captain, the one on who all were measured afterward.
Picard was a consummate diplomat and scientist, he held up the modern ideals of the Federation to a T, he never wavered in his duty, even when the odds were against him.
Sisko was real, the most real I've ever seen almost any Star Trek character. He had flaws and that made him true for me.
Janeway had a single minded desire to get her people home but she (almost) never let that compromise her duty.
I wanted all of these things in my character and more. I took a lot from Sisko, a man who's been broken and is trying to rebuild. At the same time I took Picard and Janeway's love of science along with Kirk's rogueish nature into account as well. I wanted a Captain who could feel real, who would stand with his crew and appear as one of them... not exalted above them like a demigod (the way some people hold the Captains).
In the end I came up with David Brennon. Widower, still healing from the pain of his wife's loss. Striving to hide in his career, taking the first assignmenet that would take him as far away from everything he knew as possible... except then you throw in the wrench of Qech. Much like with Worf and Dax at the end of DS9 (without the annoyances of Nicole de Boer). How do you move on when the ghost of your loved one is hovering over you all the time?
In his interview on the Captain's Log DVD Collection, William Shatner said that it all goes back to character. Star Trek is driven by character and story more than it is phasers and photon torpedoes and warp drives and transporters and all of the other trappings of Science Fiction. I love Sci Fi, more than I love any other type of story (other than perhaps history itself... that's another conversation)... but without a good character behind the story there is nothing.
The reason Star Trek beats out Star Wars in my mind -- and this is just a personal opinion mind you -- is that Star Wars is Space Opera, it is simple archetypes playing out the Heroes Journey in a traditionally predictable way. In fact if you break it down that is exactly what the Star Wars Saga is about (Lucas himself admits it). There is nothing wrong with this, I love Star Wars, but at the end of the day Character is not at the heart of that story, the actual story is. The story of the Prequel Saga was good enough (weak in some parts... but also another conversation), as good as the original if you ask me, but the characters were weak. Star Trek has a history of strong character driven stories. The Best of Both Worlds (TNG) is one perfect example of this, as is City on the Edge of Forever (TOS) or Far Beyond the Stars (DS9). I could go on all day... but I won't.
As for Commander Gaer... I'm not really all that into his head yet, not sure I will be to tell you the truth. I may switch him out for another character. It remains to be seen. _________________

funny... 'best of both worlds part 1' was on last night... tonight I get part two... strange how everytime someone mentions an ep on the forums, my favorite channels have played or plays it within days. I guess I really am just scary like that!
So thanks to Captain, it looks like my character may just be partaking in more ventures now.... and once I manage to get this *bleep* computer working right... I'll take the time to draft up another edition of 'getting to know me' for both my characters.... _________________
