(Note, this occurs just before the Vorta representative asked to board the ship).

Petty Officer First Class Karl Koester sat in the team room, sipping a raktajino and reading a PADD containing the text of a classic poem called Annabel Lee. Lying beside him was Max, an eighteen month old German Shepherd Dog.

He reached a hand down to pet the large animal, gently teasing his ears. The large canid licked his master's hand.

Koester smiled as he stood to walk his solitary rounds with Max trotting eagerly alongside him. The canid sniffed the air as they walked through the dimmed lights of the night-time corridors of the Hartington.

Koester liked night watch best of all, it was quiet and calm, a place where he could collect himself and his thoughts. He remembered Andi used to love winter nights, especially when the new snow made everything look new and pleasant.

He remembered cuddling beside her, just them and the blanket, watching the snow through her bedroom window. How much the conditions of her native New England made her smile.

Now she was dead. Killed by the Cardassians. Koester had sent three hundred and seventy-two of her captors to their graves on Dantana IV. It didn't feel like enough.

The Dominion should've obliterated the Cardies to the last child. Koester thought. The dog trotting alongside him whined as it sensed its master's upset and brushed against his master's leg.

Koester dropped to one knee and pat his dog, letting the animal lick his face as he showered the animal with affection, before he stood back and kept his silent vigil.
