Talbert was in the ship's weight room opposite the anti-grav training unit. He was aggravated, proud, upset. He shoved the 300 pound weights back up, grunting. He had worked up a sweat and was reaching the edge of his personal strength.

His mind was racing, going over the recent events in the conference room. Promoted! Full Commander, just as he hoped. But at what cost? Why did people always have to die for him to advance his career?! He thought back to his Border Watch days, and Kelly and her team, lost on the Odyssey. Thirty men and women killed and how did Starfleet reward him? They promoted him. Now, here on his first deep space posting, Commander Gaer loses his life and Talbert finds himself in the number 2 slot, promoted once again, seemingly at the expense of another valued officer.

He grunted as the 300 went back up, his arms twitching, his body grunting. "If I were Klingon, I would be proud of myself," he thought, the weights slamming back into the frame. He sat up, wiping the sweat from his forehead. Well. Nothing to do now but make the most of it.

He got off the weight bench and moved to the wall, retrieving his towel and moving towards the door. Time to get back to work, thought the ship's new XO, as he wiped the sweat and memories away.
