Phell lurched against his console. The released deuterium spilled out of vents but then the ship lept to warp speed. His careful calculations amounted to nothing! He watched his red lit board record the collapse of shields, and the fluctuating power readings. He quickly hit the abort button on the torpedo launch, stopping its detonation at the last second. In moments the ship was clear of the tunnel, and things began to return to normal.

"Lt. Croft," called out the acting tactical officer, "Why did you go to warp inside the tunnel? You could have destroyed the ship!"

Qech was laboring under the awkward silence from Doctor Newell when a sudden lurch rocked the ship, this time even more severely than before. Practically everyone standing, including Dr. Newell was thrown to the deck as the room shuddered and the lights flashed. Even the patients in their beds had to struggle to hold on. T'Lau and Dr. Kiv barely managed to grab Rolen's body before he spilled over the side. Qech wasn't so lucky. She managed to grab on to the statistics panel on the side of the bed as her body was thrown over the side, leaving her dangling over the edge, her knees touching the ground. She tried to hoist herself back up, but it was like paddling through a strong current. The pressure from the force lasted much longer than it should have.

That was no weapons impact she thought, as she fought against the nausea and vertigo that she clearly didn't need.

Uvek came to. The ship's violent reaction had rolled him to the right, throwing him out of his sitting position. He smacked his head on the deck hard, cracking his skull again and losing consciousness.

Ta'Krenn! What was that? He rolled and sat up, his eyes blurry. I didn't come to sickbay to get injured! He crawled to his biobed and pulled himself up. Qech was adjusting herself, and others were recovering from the stresses of the inertia dampening failure. Uvek moved around his bed and helped Dr. T'Lau on her feet, turning to Qech.

"Commander, are you all right?" As soon as he asked, dizziness overcame him, and he slumped against his vulcan caregiver, blood dripping green on the deck.

Calodan dragged himself to his feet from the deck. Engineering was full of smoke and sparks, but in one piece. The MSD indicated shipwide failures related to the lack of main power. The warp core was dark.

"Alright people, " he yelled, gathering engineers around himself. "We managed to escape that one with some damage. I don't know how Lt. Ghan normally organizes you so I will leave it to your typical team leaders to split assignments as needed. I'm not an engineer, so I leave Engineering in command of Lt. Ghan's second. Internal comms are out, so for now I'm going to act as runner between here and the bridge. Priorities are to get main power online, then warp drive, then shields." Calodan watched the engineers get quickly organized and made a note to mention to Lt. Ghan how well organized his teams were.

He left engineering and entered the Jefferies tubes, starting the long climb back up to the bridge.

Qech's knuckles were turning white in the effort of trying to hoist herself back onto the bed. Every muscle in her already sore, half-starved body was burning. She just didn't have the strength. With a slight grunt, she let go of the panel, allowing herself to slump to the floor, breathing heavily from the unwanted exercise. She didn't get up. She couldn't. When the force from... whatever it was, had finally evened out she had to actively fight not to vomit; as if she had anything in her stomach to get rid of.

The Commander lay down on the floor and closed her eyes. Part of her didn't want to attract the Doctors' attention from the other patients, but mostly she knew that her body was finally quitting. Her brain was making an executive decision; shutting down so it could heal, with or without her consent. She thought she heard Uvek's voice as she drifted into darkness.

USS Hartington Bridge
Xavier Croft

Croft stabilized the ship using what thrusters he had left, he let it coast on their current heading as it would deplete the remaining power he had to stop. After he had mentally counted to ten, he turned to Phell.

"My controls were overridden Ensign something must have happened down in Engineering."

The benzite shrank at the tone of the Lt., and he immediately regretted questioning him, a moment of ego raised from the adrenalin of the action.

He looked down at his console, and concentrated on his respirator. Hopefully, he wouldn't be reprimanded beyond the tone of displeasure coming from the helm.

Captain Brennon looked over his console's system's display, noting that internal communications had failed -- again. He looked up as two of his Officers began to argue.

"Lt. Croft, why did you go to warp inside the tunnel? You could have destroyed the ship!"

"My controls were overridden Ensign something must have happened down in Engineering."

Brennon shook his head as he rose to his feet, appalled by the behavior.

"Enough, we need to figure out what is going on before something else goes wrong. Croft, are the navigational sensors offline?"

Just as the helmsmen began to answer, a Jefferies Tube hatch opened in the aft section of the bridge from which appeared Lieutenant Calodan.

"We have neutralized the worst of his internal bleeding, Doctor," started Doctor T'Lau, "I believe his chances of survival have increased dramatically."

The Bajoran Chief Medical Officer smiled as she worked a tissue regenerator over the worst of Ambassador Rolen's external injuries. "All in a day's work, Doctor. I think I can handle it here, why don't y..."

Doctor Kiv is interrupted by the sudden lurch of the Hartington below their feet. Kiv's grip on the Ambassador was tenuous at best and the Vorta would have come tumbling off of the table had it not been for T'Lau bringing her Vulcan reflexes and strength to bear. As the lights went out, the EMH flickered.

"Wha..."

The holographic Doctor was gone when the emergency lights came up a few moments later. Seeing Lieutenant Uvek's bleeding head wound, Doctor T'Lau stepped over, tissue regenerator in hand. Doctor Kiv motioned for Azmay to stand watch over the still unconscious Vorta as she moved over to care for Qech.

ACTION

As the Captain and Lieutenant Calodan start their discussion, various ship systems come back to life, starting with Main Power. Sensors flicker back to life moments later, revealing several vessels on an intercept course, however, resolution was too poor at the distance they were coming from to register their design...

"Captain, engineering has damage control efforts well under way. With main power coming back online, comms should be back up momentarily."

As if fact that he said it made it so, his commbadge chirped signifying the return of intraship comms.

Doctor Kiv pressed a hypo to Commander Qech's neck, waking the other woman up gently. With a hand firmly placed on her shoulder, she slowly brought her up to a standing position, moving her back over to the biobed. The main lights came back up and the Bajoran doctor smiled as she lowered Qech back into a prone position.

"Do I need to place you in a stasis field, Commander-Doctor?"

Meanwhile, Doctor T'Lau kneels next to Lieutenant Uvek, medkit open next to her and her tissue regenerator whirring as she ran it along the Romulan's open wound. She remained silent, professional and most unemotional during the entire procedure. As the wound closed she nodded, placing the tool back into the kit as she stood.

"I would advise you to return to your bed, Lieutenant. I don't detect any damage to the newly knitted bones, but you will want to refrain from any strenuous activity for the next several days."

"Captain, engineering has damage control efforts well under way. With main power coming back online, comms should be back up momentarily."

The Captain nodded and looked to his Second Officer with no small amount of suspicion. He began his reply slowly, almost cautiously, unsure if he truly wanted to hear the answer.

"What caused the power failure, Lieutenant?"

"Do I need to place you in a stasis field, Commander-Doctor?"

Qech blinked up at Dr. Kiv, slightly confused. It took her a moment to remember exactly what had happened. Did I just... Fall asleep on the floor? Finally, she shook her head in answer to the Bajoran woman's question.

"I don't... What happened? Is everyone okay? I've got to get to the bridge..." despite her urgent declaration, she didn't move. Her mind and her body seemed to be in two different places. "I fell... I think. I didn't try to get out of bed, I promise. Did something hit us?... I've got to get to the bridge."

"I had to remove the magnetic interlocks on the secondary anitmatter injectors to ensure we had enough power to reach warp 7 to stay in front of the collapsing wave front. They couldn't stand the strain and overloaded. They're salvageable though."

He noticed the look Captain Brennon was giving him and decided to extrapolate a bit more. "Sir, as our shields collapsed we lost contact with the bridge. One more good hit would have destablized the warp core. I ordered Crewman Morus to energize the warp drive so we could escape the Tal'Harton."

The Doctor held the Commander down with little effort, shaking her head. She spoke to her patient gently, her voice calm and soothing.

"You were hurt, Commander, you're going to need to remain with us for a little while. Everyone is going to be fine, the ship's already stopped shaking. I think the battle is over with."

"Not your call to make, Lieutenant."

The Captain strode to the science station, looking over the sensor telemetry returning to Hartington. It was just as predicted.

"The radiation wave has already stretched out for five light years in every direction from the vortex -- and it's still going. Subspace has been irreparably damaged in a similar area..." the Captain shook his head. "I'm disappointed in you, Jim."

His voice didn't raise above the casual speaking tone he normally carried, though it met Calodan's ears with a coldness he'd never heard from the Captain. Brennon opened his mouth to speak once again when he looked back down to the console.

"There are ships on an intercept, can't make them out..."

Suddenly, the communications station next to Ensign Phell lit up. Whomever they were, they wanted to talk.

"Yes...sir. I just thought..."

The look on Captain Brennon's face made him realize it was time to shut his mouth. "Yes sir, not my call to make."

Qech lay back at the Doctor's urging. Everything was mush in her head. Flashes of the last twenty-four hours tried to assemble themselves like a jigsaw, who's pieces were forced into the wrong positions. The end result was a jumble of events that only made sense because she knew what the final result was: Sickbay. On the Hartington.

Her vision was blurred and she didn't have enough energy left with which to even lift a finger. She wanted to sleep. Her mind wanted her to, but for some reason her body was fighting against it. She looked up at doctor Kiv through heavy eyes.

"I don't know what happened. But the Captain needs to know... He needs to know there were people back there. I have to tell him."

a completely unrelated thought flashed, unbidden, through her mind, and Qech had no idea why she spoke it aloud, even if it was barely audible.

"They pumped my stomach. Why would they do that?"
