Xavier Croft

Croft's smile grew bigger. "Excellent, how 'bout I meet you in Transporter room 2 in say..twenty minutes?" He started running through picnic options in his head, Might have to stop by the lounge and see what the cook suggests

Qech looked up at Dr. Kiv as she continued her scans. While she knew not to ask about when she might be leaving sickbay, she couldn't help but voice the more prominent concern on her mind.

"Is the baby still in distress?" She bit her lip, waiting for the answer.

Qech hadn't heard an update regarding the baby specifically since she was informed of the danger it was in, and she knew how touch-and-go the situation was. Given the amount of time she had gone without food, her stomach had shrunk. She could only eat a small amount at a time, and it wasn't enough to support all three of them, so she still had to take injections of nutrient supplements to make up the difference.

Please let it be enough...

"Captain, I would agree to the last two points but..."

Brennon's brow furrowed as he listened to Calodan's defense. So this is how it's going to be the Captain thought to himself. He drew in a breath as Calodan finished and spoke his reply.

"If it matters at all Captain, I am very sorry I disappointed you. That was not my intention, nor was it my intention to cause damage to the ship or subspace. I was afraid for my own life and that of my shipmates and did act rashly."

"You're damn right you acted rashly, Lieutenant. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter at all if you 'believe' you violated an order or not. I said your plan was not an option. Not an option, Lieutenant."

The Captain paused for a moment, tapping his computer monitor and bringing it to life. His eyes never leaving Calodan he swiveled the monitor around so his Second Officer could see.

"Our long range sensors were damaged in the aftermath of your maneuver and so we could not see for ourselves the extent of the damage caused. Our Myosian friends, however, have been keeping me apprised of the situation as it develops nearby.

"Six inhabited, M-Class worlds were in range of the event. The nearest one, called Zi-Jan by the locals, was struck by the radiation wave within minutes of our escape from the tunnel. I'm told that the planet has been rendered uninhabitable, though it would be difficult for us or anyone to investigate this first hand as the world also had the misfortune of being inside the area of damaged subspace. Warp travel in that area, as you predicted, has been rendered impossible. Zi-Jan had a population of 800 Million, just on the verge of breaking the Warp Barrier."

Captain Brennon stopped again, watching the man who had become his friend. He saw the look of horror, the agony that played out inside Jim Calodan and wanted to comfort him. It isn't the time, he told himself. Steeling himself against the pain in Calodan's eyes, the Captain continued.

"I would have believed that after the incident on the Hood you would have learned something Jim... I took a chance on you. I spoke with Captain DeSoto before bringing you on board. He suggest -- very strongly -- that I pick someone else. I told him no, I told him that I believed everyone deserves a second chance... this was yours."

With that the Captain lifted a PADD and continued, his voice taking on a more official tone.

"Lieutenant Arjim Calodan, for your recent actions I am placing a letter of reprimand in your personnel file. It will include the details of what has occurred here, as well as your own testimony. Considering your past disciplinary actions it is my observation that these misdeeds, however accidental on your part, will make it difficult to impossible for you to ever obtain your own command.

"We are two months away from Starfleet and I need everyone I have. I need to know I can trust everyone I have. This includes you, Jim... but I will be watching you. This is your last chance. I will not tolerate anything like this again, Lieutenant. You do not want to meet me in such a situation. Am I making myself clear?"

"Is the baby still in distress?"

Doctor Kiv noted the look of fear on Qech's face. It was almost primal, the kind of fear one would naturally expect from a mother-to-be when encountering something so harrowing. Kiv put a hand on her friend's hand, taking it as she spoke. As comforting as possible she began explaining the situation.

"We are keeping a very close eye on your child, Davynn, but it is simply too soon to tell. I am doing everything in my power to ensure this situation turns out for the best, but I need you to prepare yourself for the worst. Your body suffered a great deal of trauma, most of which I have been able to regenerate, but recovery is more than simply closing the wounds. Keep a positive attitude, hope for the best. I will be here with you through out all of it."

She smiled, stood back to her full height and started away. After only a step she stopped and turned back towards the First Officer.

"I know something that may help to cheer you up, to keep hoping for the better... would you like to see a picture of the baby?"

"You need not thank me, Lieutenant. I am simply doing my duty as a physician. As a Vulcan, my inborn talents are uniquely suited to assisting you in an endeavor such as this."

T'Lau knelt down, sitting cross-legged on the deck, ignoring the meditation pillows. She motioned for Uvek to join her as she cleared her own mind.

"Firstly, we need to clear your mind of any obstructions, to bring order to your chaotic inner self. Romulans, as a descendant race of ancient and more violent Vulcans, are prone to many of the powerful and rather dangerous emotions that my people suppress. If we are to be successful, you will need to master your mind, if only for a short time. Are you ready?"

Qech took a deep breath and closed her eyes as Kiv explained. She knew it would probably be too early for the Doctor to know much more, but she couldn't help but to ask. She steeled herself against the emotions that welled up inside her when she thought about exactly why her baby was at risk in the first place. For the first time since they were rescued, she felt a wave of anger run through her veins. Even though she was supposed to be thinking positive thoughts, the images of her abuse kept flooding into her mind, and for once she had some energy with which to feel angry.

"I know something that may help to cheer you up, to keep hoping for the better... would you like to see a picture of the baby?"

Qech's feelings subsided rather quickly after Dr. Kiv's offer. She smiled. "Well, I guess I have a choice to make now. I've been thinking about this..." the curious expression on the Doctor's face made her laugh slightly (which, again, hurt) and she explained: "The women in my family have a bit of a tradition. No one finds out beforehand what the baby's sex is. They always wait to be surprised." Qech waited and saw the realization of what she was saying cross Dr. Kiv's face. "I wish, just for now, I could erase my knowledge of these things. But unless you can put a censor bar on the picture" she laughed "then I'm going to know what I'm looking at."

She looked away for a moment in thought. Then said quietly, almost to herself. "But I would like to see... I can't take the chance that..." She paused, trying to speak around a nearly-formed lump in her throat. "Well, that I may not be able to later." She looked back up at Dr. Kiv, a sad, but determined look on her face. "I'd like to know from you" she said. "Before I look at the image. Somehow it's just not the same if I figure it out for myself."

Kiv smiled wider and picked up a nearby PADD. She took two steps towards Qech and stopped, looking down at the PADD. Her eyes went from PADD to Patient several times, as though she was teasing, drawing out the moment as long as she could. At least this is a pleasent declaration for me to give she thought to herself before she spoke up again.

"Very well, Commander-Doctor. I'm pleased to inform you that I am 98% sure you are going to have a baby boy. Feel free to look over the data yourself..." she smiled wider as she handed over the PADD with the image on it, "or of course you could just enjoy the view."

Qech's smile brightened her tired face when she heard the news; her green eyes focusing intently upon the PADD that was handed to her. The grin seemed almost permanent as she looked upon her baby boy for the first time. "A boy..." she said quietly. "Somehow I thought so."

She looked at what would be, to most anyone else, an indistinguishable form on a foggy image. But she saw it for what it was. She touched the small, but growing bulge in her belly, projecting a hopeful thought that she wished he could hear. Hang in there...

"You do not want to meet me in such a situation. Am I making myself clear?" "

Calodan stood at attention before the Captain's desk. After the Hood, he was sure he would never gain command but this just cemented it. While he knew that his actions would be dangerous, he was unaware of the amount of damage it would cause. All he had cared about was saving his ship and its crew.

"Yes sir."

Calodan waited to be dismissed. It was time for some soul searching.

picking up the small stack of files on her desk, she began to sort through the names in them.

"Make it thirty minutes as I still have some business to attend to, and if you feel the need to bring the picnic you are planning, you'll want light foods that wont weigh down the pack, and we don't need to be stuffed while trying to hike. I may have a basic medical training, but cleaning up after a sick hiker is not a part of it..." Her smile tried to make her sarcasm seem a light joke, but it rarely worked. so with a soft sigh, she gripped the files and motioned towards the door.

"thirty minutes" she said with a smile.

USS Hartington

Croft picked up his pack, "Thirty minutes then." He was still smiling as he walked out the door. It's promising to be a great day He wandered off in the direction of the lounge with some time to kill.

Uvek nodded. "Yes, Doctor. Despite what has happened I have spent the last several hours in meditation. I believe I am ready."

Uvek had done many dangerous things but this had surpassed them all. Blasted Vorta! He thought, not for the first time. Had he not insisted they would face some form of mental alteration, he never would have made such a rash decision. Well, no time for recriminations now. He, Uvek, had made that decision and now he had to make it right.

Shaking her head as he left her office she couldn't help but smile. at least someone finds my company desirable... she thought to herself as she took a quick look around, filed away the few notes that she had left to review and walked towards the door.

"Now if only I can remember where my hiking boots went..." she muttered to herself as she headed towards her quarters.

USS Hartington Transporter room 2
Xavier Croft

Croft leaned against the wall, chatting with the transporter Chief. For an Alpha Centaurian she was good for some interesting conversation. He was early, and his gut told him the Counselor was probably going to be a little late.

"Yes sir."

"Dismissed, Mr. Calodan."

As the door closed behind Calodan the Captain sunk back down into his seat, mentally exhausted. Brennon had never gotten used to the discipline aspect of of command, and he didn't think he ever would. So this is why they talk about emotional distance... he thought to himself as he rose from the chair and stepped out onto the Bridge. The few crewmen manning stations stood straighter as the Captain passed by. Under normal operations, these young and inexperienced Officers would not normally be on the Bridge, but with the rest of the Senior Staff either incapacitated or on leave, Brennon had thought it best to give the lower decks a chance to shine. He nodded to Ensign Ulog, the Tellarite Operations Officer from Gamma Shift currently on Watch, and entered the turbolift.

"Deck Seven."

There was something too quiet, almost lonely, about a ship only partially crewed. Brennon disliked shore leave, the whole prospect of breaking the routine bothered him. Perhaps he was simply to accustom to doing something he enjoyed that the prospect of work never really bothered him -- except for this last meeting -- and the idea of stopping, even for a short break was just unappealing. He let those thoughts run their course as he strode into Sickbay, seeing his Chief Engineer and First Officers right off. Both appeared to be fast asleep. Not wanting to bother them the Captain turned to leave.

"Sir," came a familiar voice, calling to him from across Sickbay, "Captain, is everything alright?"

Brennon turned to face the person speaking to him. It was D'hala, a Denobulan Nurse who had served aboard Hartington as long as he had, if not longer. In fact, she had given the Captain his first physical aboard the ship nearly nine years earlier. By way of an answer, Brennon smiled and nodded.

"Everything is fine D'hala, I just came to check up on our people. How are they holding up?"

The Denobulan crossed the room, PADD in hand and explained the situation to the Captain as best as she could. He was relieved to learn his Chief Engineer would be back on the job as early as the next morning... the repair efforts would be sped up greatly with his mere presence.

"Commander Qech, however, may require a little more time. I think that Doctor Kiv will be ready to release her from Sickbay tomorrow, but she won't be free to return to duty for a little while after that. We're going to need to see how her body is taking to the regeneration treatments and she'll need fairly regular outpatient care for at least a week after her release."

The Captain nodded, taking in all the nurse said. After a few minutes of discussion he straightened up, tugging downwards on his uniform jacket.

"Well, I'd better be going. There are a few more areas I'd like to check in on before I take off for the day."

Nurse D'hala's eyes narrowed as the Captain prepared to excuse himself, but she had known the man for quite a while and pressed him on a hunch.

"You know sir, I'm sure the Commander -- or Lieutenant Ghan -- wouldn't mind a visit."

"Oh, oh no. They're both asleep, I wouldn't want to..."

"I'm already awake, Captain. You and that Nurse are discussing us like we're not even here, and as though we were some sort of meat! It's enough to make me want to stay in these damn uncomfortable beds even longer..."

Captain Brennon smiled and, nodding to D'hala as he passed by the Nurse, stepped to Ghan's side.

"Yes, Doctor. Despite what has happened I have spent the last several hours in meditation. I believe I am ready."

Doctor T'Lau's brow turned upwards at the statement and she nodded. Her voice was nothing if not emotionless, but had she not been Vulcan, Uvek would have sworn he heard a note of sarcasm in her next comment.

"I should hope so, Lieutenant. The state we find your mind in will be the ultimate sign however. Kneel."

She pressed her fingers against the katra points along the Romulan's forehead and face with a firm, yet delicate grip. It was as though she was handling something precious... and in a way it was, for what would be more precious than the mind of another. Slowly, quietly, she intoned those immortal words, passed down from ages long ago past. The Time of Awakening, the Age of Surak.

"My mind to your mind, your thoughts to my thoughts. Our minds are merging, our minds are one."

Moments became an eternity and in that eternity there was only their link. Somewhere in his mind, Uvek could hear T'Lau calling out to him.

Can you hear me? Guide me to you. Take us back to where I can help you.

The Captain finished with his conversation with Lieutenant Ghan -- even Brennon could only take so much socializing with the Tellarite -- and tuned to leave. Nurse D'hala had long since returned to work and was no where to be found. More importantly, she was not there to pressure the Captain into talking with his First Officer.

What is wrong with you? he chastised himself. What possibly point could there be to avoiding a sick woman, someone who he had come to trust and rely upon. His friend who now needed a friend of her own? You're acting like a child. But why? He turned to look at her, sleeping on the nearby biobed and asked himself again. Why? The answer was obvious, painfully so even, you didn't need to be Ship's Counselor to see it.

Ailis

David closed his eyes and shook his head. This was ridiculous, but understandable. Davynn wasn't going to die, Kiv had been taking very good care of her. She needed a friend now, after everything that had happened down there. That settled it of course. Brennon stepped over to his First Officer's side, to his friend's side, and gently touched her on the shoulder.

"Davynn."

Davynn's mind had been fighting to wake up from yet another recreation of her captivity when she thought she felt something touch her shoulder. She heard someone speaking. She snapped to wakefulness immediately, throwing her arms up to protect herself only to find she was looking up at a familiar face. She just blinked at him for a moment while her conscious mind reconnected with reality, arms still partially raised. Slowly, she lowered them.

"Captain?"

He watched her start awake, his heart falling in his chest as he saw the pain she was clearly in, the mental agony of waking up terrified of what you'd see. And then her mind gripped onto reality once more and she recognized him.

"Captain?"

He smiled and patted her shoulder gently.

"At ease, Commander, I'm just checking up on you. I realized we hadn't spoken at all since we brought you back. The Doctors tell me you'll be out of here in a day or so, not back on duty, but that's something."

He looked down at her, wondering if his words held any comfort for her at all, if his presence helped.
