Brennon sighed, feeling like an ass. It was plain enough for him to see that he wasn't doing this right at all. He closed his eyes and an image of his late wife came into his vision. You know what she'd want... he thought to himself. Stop being an ass and be her friend. He smiled, and so too did the image of his wife, as though she approved. He opened his eyes and smiled genuinely down to Davynn and took hold of her forearm.

"I'm serious. Call me David. Now, talk to me... I think you need it."

The image of the group in the cockpit froze and T'Lau stepped over to Newell, observing the Doctor from Uvek's perspective. After a moment she moved and eyed the frozen Uvek, searching the man's eyes.

"You truly felt that this was the right path to take."

It was a statement, not a question. She spoke with a bold certitude, she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that this was so. Here eyes followed Shuttle-Uvek's gaze, noticing something out of place.

"Or did you."

T'Lau followed the Romulan's eyes as they locked in on another target, one seemingly out of the way, but from Uvek's vantage should have been looked at from the start.

"You've never made your distrust of Ambassador Rolen a secret. Why did you choose to trust his interpretation of the events at this juncture? Why take such drastic measures based solely on his fear of the coming events?"

"I'm here to relieve you"

Ensign Mack looked up from a PADD that had been handed to him, his brow furrowed in confusion. He looked back down to the PADD and then to Calodan once again.

"Sir? Are you sure, Lieutenant? I received a revised duty roster from Yeomen M'Rowl, I was asked to take this watch."

Mack extended the PADD towards Lieutenant Calodan, the expression on his face a little uneasy about the whole situation.

Calodan took the padd from the Ensign and read over it. "It appears there was a change and I wasn't notified. Carry on." He stepped back into the turbolift and headed back to his quarters. The Captain moves fast, I'm already off the duty roster, he mused. He noticed his hands shaking a bit, probably from his hypo. The turbolift arrived at his destination, and then he stepped out and back in. "Deck 7, Sickbay." If I'm awake and sober, I might as well check on the Commander and the rest of the crew.

The turbolift arrived at deck 7 and he exited, heading directly into sickbay. After consulting with the duty nurse, he headed over to the Commander's bed. "Hello Commander Qech. How are you feeling?" He hid a shaking hand behind his back and laid a smile on her.

"I'm serious. Call me David. Now, talk to me... I think you need it."

Qech bit her lip as she looked up at him, wondering what she could possibly say. She was used to dealing with personal problems alone; a habit the commission counselors back on Trill tried to break her of. She felt a confusing conflict deep inside herself at that moment. Ailis could tell him anything, as his wife. But she wasn't Ailis. And he was her Captain, probably the only person on the ship that she felt she had to prove herself to. And to break down in front of him now... For him to see her like this... It was almost shameful.

...But she had to try. She had been the one that wanted him to open himself up to her as a friend in the first place. Now she was getting her just desserts. He was doing what real friends do, and she was going to have to make a genuine attempt if she didn't want to blow him off completely.

No tears she warned herself.

She regarded him a moment before finally speaking. "Well I really don't know what to say to be honest. All I have to do with myself is to eat and rest... But I find I can't sleep, not well anyway, and I still can't eat a full meal without having to add the supplements."

Her voice was far quieter than she had meant it to be, almost meek. Not off to a great start Davynn... She sighed.

"I just want to go back to work and pretend this whole thing never happened. If the baby weren't in trouble, and the symbiont... God knows I would."

Uvek was taken aback for a moment, when suddenly a third Uvek appeared in the corner. He was wearing a traditional Romulan military tunic, grey and metallic. Uvek looked in fear from him to T'Lau. He had worked so hard to bury that part of his persona, that its appearance startled even him. Tal Shiar Uvek was staring at the Vorta. Understanding came to the Romulan and he nodded.

"When faced with a bevy of impossibilities, choose the one that allows you to survive and fight another day." Uvek turned to Doctor T'Lau. "My career is a secret onboard this ship. However, my life for 20 years was as an operative of the Tal Shiar. The options we were faced with were, as I saw them, capture and re-education, fight and likely death, or suicide as our Ambassador guide contemplated." He shook his head.

"I think I fell back on a plan that allowed me to explore two of those three options, while retaining the safety of my knowledge and experience apart from the inquisitors Rolen was convinced would be attacking us."

"In addition, we had met Inquisitor Voss while on the Hartington, and our initial contact did seem to indicate a religious ferver akin to the Vorta's warnings. As a Tal Shiar operative, I understand that you must sometimes choose the lesser of two evils. Hence, I chose to believe the Vorta, protect my core, and hope for the best."

A surprising revelation occurred to Uvek. He had actually sacrificed for this crew. His dangerous maneuver was, in point of fact, an attempt to learn while stopping his enemy from learning of them; protecting the Hartington and crew, just as Commander Qech had wanted to do. It was his first selfless act for the Federation, and not just for Uvek the spy. Fascinating!

"I just want to go back to work and pretend this whole thing never happened. If the baby weren't in trouble, and the symbiont... God knows I would."

He shrugged, a little unsure of how to phrase what he was thinking. Just spit it out, nothing is worse than saying nothing at all. And so he did.

"I could say that you're under the care of the best Doctor in the Quadrant right now, but that would be playing to what I'm supposed to say. I could say that everything will be alright, but that would just be patronizing because we both know that there are a lot of things that can go wrong... so what I'm going to say is simply this: Don't worry, Davynn. No matter what happens, we'll all be here to help you. I'll be here. Anything you need, at any time of the day or night all you need to do is call my name and I'll make sure you're taken care of. We're all we have out here, we take care of our own. Okay?"

He tightened his grip on her forearm and gave her a reassuring smile, one that was warm, full of caring and compassion... a true smile

Qech nodded slowly, her eyes drifting back to the PADD now resting her in lap. "Worrying is the worst thing I can do right now. I know that. It's also the hardest thing to avoid..." She didn't even notice the tear running down her cheek, and failed to see it even after it fell to the sheets.

"It's all I have left of him."

"It's all I have left of him."

His eyes closed and he patted her forearm gently. Seconds passed as nearly a minute ticked by in silence. His voice was barely above a whisper when he finally responded to her.

"I know."

His mouth opened as though he as about to continue speaking, but before he could the comm chirped to life.

Captain Brennon, could you please come to Main Engineering. There is something down here we'd like you to talk a look at, Sir.

His eyes opened, glistening with tears as he looked down at Davynn. They'd hit a breakthrough and he didn't want to leave... but this was the life, and his duty came first... before everything else... always. He nodded down to her, patting her arm once again before tapping his combadge.

"I'm on my way, Chief."

And just like that, he was The Captain again.

It had been so quiet in the room that Qech nearly jumped when the Captain's combadge went off. Although, it wasn't as if she hadn't been jumpy lately.

Captain Brennon, could you please come to Main Engineering. There is something down here we'd like you to talk a look at, Sir.

She saw the regret in his eyes and knew she had to go. She smiled and nodded, knowing that his duty to the ship had to come first. It was something she understood very well.

And the entire reason we got the Tal'Harton's attention in the first place...

She laid her head back against the pillow as she watched him go, considering for the first time that maybe, just maybe, she didn't have to blame herself completely for what had happened...

Only a few minutes had passed since the Captain's departure from Sickbay when Qech heard Calodan's voice from the entryway.

"Hello Commander Qech. How are you feeling?"

She looked up at her fellow Trill and smiled, feeling much better since her talk with the Captain. "Jim... You look terrible."

"Thank you, always nice when a woman compliments your looks. I had a bit of a sleepless night, but nothing I can't handle." He smiled at her again, but inwardly cursed. Of course a former Doctor would see it on me.

"Gotta say, you aren't looking the best either. How are you feeling? I heard a bit of what you and the other crew went through, and I was worried."

Qech studied her friend for a moment. He did look fatigued, but that was hardly the extent of his troubles. If she didn't know any better she'd think he was suffering from the after-effects of a quickly-solved hangover. His bloodshot eyes gave him away more even than his expression did, and his quick change of the subject.

"Gotta say, you aren't looking the best either. How are you feeling? I heard a bit of what you and the other crew went through, and I was worried."

"Well, I didn't exactly expect to be ready for the cat-walk, so it's no news to me that I look terrible." She smiled slightly, trying to project a better mood than she was currently in.

"As for what we went through... Well, I'm not sure how much I want to talk about that." She fidgeted uncomfortably as her recent nightmare resurfaced in her mind, but shook it off quickly.

"I can't say I mind the company though. Actually, you just missed the Captain." She pointed toward the door, and then patted the seat of a chair next to her bed.

"Have a seat. And if you want to tell me what's really bothering you, feel free. Because I'm sensing some major bullshit with that "fatigued' excuse."

He laughed, nervously, but a laugh none the less. "Sure you were a Doctor and not a Chief Counselor?" He sat in the offered chair.

"I'm sure you don't want to talk about your...encounter...and I'm definitely not here to push you. I was just interested in how you're doing."

"I can't say I mind the company though. Actually, you just missed the Captain."

"Oh, that is.." Calodan paused for a moment, just enough to collect his words. He wasn't angry at the Captain, resentful perhaps. More like, ashamed. "Too bad. We three could have had a fun chat. Luckily, I'm free and can keep you company as long as you'll have me."

"I'm sensing some major bullshit with that "fatigued' excuse."

"Ok Counselor Qech. Let's just say I made a bad call, again, and that led to some bad decisions and rehashing of past ills last night. What little sleep I got was in a chair in my quarters. I'm stiff, sore, and still a bit hungover." He forced the smile he knew she needed to see. "But, I know staring at Sickbay ceilings can get old and will all the blueshirts in here fussing over you...I can't believe you haven't gone insane and fought your way out yet."

Walking into transport room 2 she noted that she was actually on time... though she was sure Croft was waiting for her, and she was right.

Walking up behind him as he chatted away with the transport engineer, she couldn't help but notice how engrossed he was in his conversation.

"All set?" she asked a little louder than would normally be acceptable. She was grinning like a chesire cat as she walked towards the transport pad.

USS Hartington Transporter room 2
Xavier Croft

Croft had been listening to another near miss transporter story when Rea had arrived. Thank God, I didn't realize what I got myself into with the Chief He smiled warmly at Rea, knowing full well she heard his thoughts.

"Just waiting on you." He swung his pack from the floor to his shoulder then motioned to the transporter PADD, "After you."

"Sure you were a Doctor and not a Chief Counselor?"

Qech laughed, which was a welcome sound, at least to her. "Dr. Braxlin Qech was my third host. His works in psychology made him famous in life, but I'm sorry to say his death is the part everyone remembers the most."

When Calodan sat down and explained the situation she listened quietly. She felt bad for her friend, even if she didn't have the whole story.

"Let's just say I made a bad call, again, and that led to some bad decisions and rehashing of past ills last night. What little sleep I got was in a chair in my quarters. I'm stiff, sore, and still a bit hungover."

"So, I'm going to guess that you're not really overly disappointed about missing out on a chat with the Captain." She looked him in the eye, and continued. "I've never seen you make a bad call, Calodan. Rash ones, yes, but never bad. There's a method to your madness, even if it had repercussions." She smiled. "I'm sure you did it, whatever it was, for a reason... What was it?"

She ignored his comment about sickbay for now, keeping the conversation where she knew he needed it to be; whether or not he wanted it that way was another story. But she knew all about the long-term side-effects of beating yourself up for something you couldn't change.

It's also something of a relief not to have to focus on my own problems for once... I need to stop thinking about the baby...

"Thank you for the platitudes, but Starfleet doesn't see it that way. I made a decision, one I thought was a correct one to pull the ship out of danger. We were in a subspace tunnel one the way back from the station where...the Tal'Harton station, being pursued by fighters." He paused to gauge her reaction. The way she kept deflecting from her condition back to his was telling, but she was his XO and he'd let her get away with it. "They managed to collapse our rear shields and took out comms. I was in Engineering, Mr. Ghan had been injured. Being unable to communicate with the bridge, I made a call to take the ship to warp. In the process, I managed to plow out EPS conduits across half the ship, damaged the port nacelle, and blew out the secondary antimatter injectors. That was the big jolt you doubtless felt."

He paused, to catch his breath. As the XO, she'd get all of this info as soon as she was back on duty, undoubtedly from the Starfleet side of the equation. At least telling her now would give her a chance to hear his side of reasoning first. "Taking the ship to warp in the tunnel was a calculated risk. I had discussed it with the Captain and he...decided to look for other options. Ensign Phell had a plan, but it wasn't going to work. Our warp field...buckled the tunnel. It destroyed the fighters pursuing us and spit us out..on the leading edge of a shockwave. I managed to damage subspace for 8 or so lightyears, probably on both sides of the tunnel. The radiation wave swept over...at least 8 inhabited planets."
