Qech tried not to react too much as Calodan explained what happened, until he got to the part about the radiated planets. It was difficult not to register obvious shock at such an extreme consequence. She stared at him for a moment, with sympathy in her eyes. Considering his actions had spared the lives of everyone aboard the ship, including her and her unborn child, it was difficult to berate him for it. After all, it's difficult to throw your own life, and the life of your friends, away when you have the power to stop it. She just wished the result hadn't been so costly...

I don't envy the Captain the chore of having to reprimand him.

"It sounds like a catch 22, no matter how you look at it" she said finally. "Although it's very clear why you were so hard on yourself. I would be too in your position. I just hope you keep in mind that taking responsibility for what you've done is one thing... Punishing yourself for something you can't change is quite another." She smiled at her friend. "And do I need to bring up the amount of alcohol it must have taken to get you to the point of a hangover?"

"I learned long ago it is the potency, not the volume that can effect my constitution. I appreciate the kind words Commander, but sometimes a person needs to punish themselves a bit. Acts as a reminder, for next time."

He gave her a slight smile. "So, have you picked out a name yet? You should know, we have a pool going. I'll cut you in on 50% of my winnings if you give birth on my date." He smiled at her, hoping to draw her into a conversation about her plans to be a mother.

"I learned long ago it is the potency, not the volume that can effect my constitution. I appreciate the kind words Commander, but sometimes a person needs to punish themselves a bit. Acts as a reminder, for next time."

She smiled. "Note I said the amount of alcohol, not the amount of drink. But as long as I know the punishing will eventually end, I'll let it go. You have to forgive my asking. I do have to keep track of crew morale, after all. Comes with the job." She grinned.

"I want you to know you can always talk to me... Unless it's late and I don't feel like it, or I'm busy, or I'm enjoying a good book, or some ice cream or something. And I advise you never to bug me before 0800 hours. I'm not a morning person. I get cranky. Talking when I'm in the holosuite is out too. That includes poker games. But other than that... My door is open." She laughed, happy to end the subject on a lighter note.

"So, have you picked out a name yet? You should know, we have a pool going. I'll cut you in on 50% of my winnings if you give birth on my date."

She shook her head. "No. No names yet. I can narrow them down to just boys names now, if you had another pool going on that. Not that 50/50 odds are adventurous. But I'm holding off on a name for now..." She looked away for a moment, her smile fading for just an instant. It was hard to think ahead when she was so worried about whether or not she'd even get to see her baby. She forced a smile on her face and looked back to Calodan.

"And I'll make every attempt to be punctual. I've got to warn you though; my mother was early, I was early, my brother was late... Not the best track record in my family."

"I do have to keep track of crew morale, after all. Comes with the job."

"I guess it does Commander, and you do a very good job of keeping us from killing each other. I appreciate your offer of an ear, and if I ever need it, I'll be sure to follow your rules. I guess it can get lonely at the top though, so if you need someone to listen, or to distract you, I'm here for you too. As the only joined Trill onboard, we have to stick together a bit."

"And I'll make every attempt to be punctual. I've got to warn you though; my mother was early, I was early, my brother was late... Not the best track record in my family."

He saw the worry on her face, and patted her hand on the bed. "I'm sure everything will be fine. As much as that is use as a platitude, I sincerely mean it. Dr. Kiv is fantastic and the entire crew is pulling for you. It's good luck to have a baby on the crew and we sure aren't going to let anything happen to your bouncing baby boy before we all get to spoil him. It's supposed to be a surprise, but the crew has already worked out babysitting rotations for you to help out." He smiled sheepishly at her. "And as for your track record, I'll just have to get a few more dates then."

"Babysitting rotations?" She laughed. "Wow, that's really... That means a lot. It really does. I won't let it get out that I know. Promise."

She looked back down at the PADD in her lap, smiling sadly at the image on the screen. "I'm pulling for him too. I think we could do with a little extra good luck on this ship, given everything that's happened already. I'm fighting my desire to go back to work prematurely, because I don't want to take any chances. The symbiont has suffered as well. I haven't felt this confused since my joining. As much as I need a distraction I can't afford to cut corners this time. So, I can't tell you how much I appreciate having you here. You were right about one thing; I think Sickbay may be driving me insane."

She grinned slyly for a moment. "And as for your bet... My lips are sealed, but the first person to break Doctor Kiv may just get the projected due date out of her. I never told you this, but she seems to have a weakness for almonds."

USS Hartington Transporter room 2
Xavier Croft

Croft steps up onto the transport pad, looking down at Rea. "Are you coming?" the teasing tone matching the grin on his face.

shaking her head she couldn't help but wonder what in the world she was doing here. why do I let myself get into these situations?

Stepping up onto one of the transport stations she threw a quick glance at Croft, then back to the the transporter chief.

"alright, let's go"

Croft closes his eyes as this brief, weightless, there but not there transporter feeling happens, then feels the warmth of real sunlight on his face. He leans his head back, laughing out loud. That feels so good

"I'm glad I can be of assistance Commander. It's your job to keep up morale, and its my job to be you when you're incapacitated...so for now its my job to keep up morale. Good to know I can do my job."

"I never told you this, but she seems to have a weakness for almonds."

"Well, I might just have to exploit that tidbit of knowledge." He smiled and laughed conspiratorially. He leaned back a bit in his chair, getting more comfortable, preparing for a long stay.

Location: Ensign Azmay's Quarters

Ensign Azmay considered es options, and decided against leaving the ship. E had a lot of things to do, and truly needed some time for emself. E would like to approach es crewmates, but seemed unable to do so. So e turned back into emself, and kept writing es paper on the differences between Loraby and Humans.

Location: Ensign Koa Tanay's Quarters

Ensign Koa Tanay decided to use the time to practice, practice, practice... E needed to be away from the buzzling aliens that were everywhere in the Hartington. E needed to breathe, to relax, to focus. To touch again the core of es being, hidden inside es chest. So e kept to erself.

Uvek stared at his Tal Shiar persona. It, he, seemed not like himself at all. The look on his face was a mixture of arrogance, distaste, suspicion and violence. It was not a look Uvek had ever seen from this vantage point and it made him shudder. Surrounding the vision was the thick air of secrets, regrets, hatred, anger, death and yet a resolve as well. Hidden among all the feelings was pride, desire, hope and longing that some day all his efforts would mean something. That somehow he had made a difference for his people. But, as he stood in Federation clothing looking at a true Romulan, he wondered what part of him was really here and what part had been left behind after all.

His mind was beginning to drift.

Location: Sickbay, USS Hartington

Into Sickbay steps Yeomen M'Rowl. The Caitian strides with purpose, not stopping for even a moment as she walked into the room and moves towards the pair of Trill. She stops at the foot of Qech's biobed, nodding to Calodan as her feline features twisted in the rough approximation of a smile.

"Commander, I'm glad to see you're awake. I just wanted to check up on you... there are several members of the crew that are worried about you and your unborn child. Out of courtesy, the Captain has refrained from telling anyone -- including me -- anything about your condition other than that you are not dead. Put a worrier to rest and tell me how you are."

Location: Inside Uvek's Mind

T'Lau watched the other-other Uvek, listened to his speech and shook her head.

"No." she stated flatly. "I do not believe that is the reason. 20 years of indoctrination and programing to be the lone wolf." She shook her head and continued. "You have been with us for several years, shown your loyalty and desire -- true desire -- to work in the unit. Look deeper inside yourself, find the truth in your heart. Only then will you be able to put this aside and heal. The reason you're not feeling well is because this false reason is blocking the healing of your mind. He," she thrusts a finger towards Tal Shiar Uvek, "Is the true reason you're hurting now."

Qech smiled mischievously. "Well, I'm not dead..." she said simply. The look on the Yeoman's face at her response was enough to convince her not to leave it there.

"Personally, aside from some ongoing treatments, I'm alright. In fact, I don't think I'd still be here if it weren't for the baby and the symbiont. They're not... Well, I wish I could say they were doing so well."

She frowned, and looked away for a moment, wishing she could go back to the happy distraction her conversation with Calodan was providing. She knew the Caitian meant well, but having to talk about the baby's well-being again was like pouring salt into a wound.

"...They're not... Well, I wish I could say they were doing so well."

M'Rowl noticed the frown forming on the Commander's face and her features softened, melting into those of a worried mother. She stepped closer to Qech, her hand resting on the other woman's.

"I'm sorry, Commander, I didn't mean to upset you. Perhaps we can discuss something else. Anything. I hear that these people we've come across are very friendly. Perhaps when you leave Sickbay we might be able to go down to their world, look around a little. I'm sure the Doctor wouldn't mind if you were accompanied by someone."

She looked to Calodan, then back to Qech as she continued.

"Perhaps the three of us would be able to find some sort of nice diversion worthy of our time... what do you say?"

Uvek straightened up. He approached the grey-clad twin and looked closer. It made him uncomfortable to think what his empire, his leadership had made him to. Suddenly, like the snake in his nightmares, a wave of revelation flooded his mind. He staggered back, crying out with his arms extended as if to ward off the Romulan before him.

It all came to life. The Tal Shiar had used him. Used his loyalties, his moldability, his impressionable mind and desires to their own end. Pushed him to steal information, lie, cheat, KILL; all in the support of their aims, their paranoia! For Nothing! Twenty years of his life taught that the Federation was the enemy. That no other race could have loyalty, pride, sincerity. Well, they were wrong! Here, standing in this uniform, having dealt with this crew, he knew that was wrong. Deep down, long before this he knew that was wrong and had made the choice to abandon his service.

He looked at T'Lau. "I believe I understand now. I thought I had buried this part of me, when all along I have been coloring my decisions and judgments by this part of me. What do I do? I can no more remove this experience from me as I could cut off my own hand. How do I move forward and make judgments based on this life, this uniform?"
