Location: Captain's Ready Room, USS Hartington

Captain Brennon ceased recording his Captain's Log as the chimes on the door rang. Even though his Yeomen had told him that Commander Qech would be returning to active duty today, the Captain had let it slip his mind. Shore Leave will do that to you he thought to himself as he picked up a PADD with the latest duty roster on it.

"Come in."

Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington

Sitting in the center seat as the crew of the Hartington checked over the last minute notes before departing the Panthanel system was Lieutenant Uvek. The tactical officer had been pulling more than his fair share of bridge duty over the past two weeks, taking very little leave time. Ensign Ulog, the Operations Officer on duty stepped over to Uvek, PADD in hand, offering the device to the Lieutenant.

"Here are the latest results from Warp Trials, Sir. Lieutenant Ghan wanted to reassure the Captain that we'd be ready to warp out of the system at 0900..."

As Lieutenant Uvek took the report from the Tellarite Ensign, he could see something was bothering him. Luckily -- or not depending on your viewpoint -- for the Romulan, he didn't have to wait very long to find out what it was.

"Sir, do we know when Lieutenant Calodan will be returning to duty?

Location: Deck 8 Crew Lounge "The Team Room", USS Hartington

Yeomen M'Rowl stepped into the nearly empty Team Room, her footfalls echoing as she walked. It was Alpha Shift, prime working time of the ship's day and many crewmen were at stations. Beta Shift had been called in to work in several departments and Gamma Shift was fast asleep, leaving the lounge devoid of occupants -- except for one. M'Rowl stepped towards the lone figure and motioned to a chair at the table.

"Lieutenant Calodan, may I join you?"

Commander Qech entered the Captain's ready room upon his response, feeling better than she had in weeks. It seemed that shore leave, combined with some positive news from Dr. Kiv regarding the health of her son, had done her some good. She even had a slight tan. The X.O. smiled as she saluted her Captain.

"Lieutenant Commander Qech, reporting Sir." She grinned, and added: "I don't think you can get me onto the bridge fast enough."

Captain Brennon stood up, a broad smile across his face. He nodded as he pressed a button on the PADD he had in hand and extended it towards his First Officer.

"Welcome back, Commander. I for one am glad you're well enough to be working again... though I have a few reports on my desk that tell me that you may not have been resting that whole time."

He gave her a mockingly stern look and motioned for her to sit down across from him at the desk.

"I have a few things I'd like to discuss with you before we get back under way. Topping my list is Lieutenant Calodan."

The Romulan shook his head. He did not take the Tellarite's comment personally, everyone was concerned with Calodan. "The Lieutenant will return when the captain sees fit, ensign. There are a number of issues to resolve. Thank you for your report."

He turned his attention to the information, and keyed the delivery into the arm console. He, too, was worried for Calodan. The lieutenant was an integral part of the crew, and while Uvek did not doubt the captain would restore him to active duty, it was the aftermath of the planetary effects that would present the greatest challenge to the Trill officer. Well, the staff supported him, and hopefully that would be enough.

Sitting in her office staring at the stack of files and notes that she's been trying to work on since returning from shore leave, she leans back in her chair with a sigh. She'd been sleeping fitfully since her message from her sister, and a yawn overtook her. She was used to running on a few hours sleep, but her lack of focus was wearing on her.

I have to get out of this office at some point... she thought to hersef as she realized she'd done very little besides work and sleep the last two days. perhaps an hour or so meditation in the holodeck...

"Computer, time" she said and listened to the female voice respond the current time.

"Three more hours..." she said to herself and pulled the stack of notes toward her. "Three more hours...."

"Welcome back, Commander. I for one am glad you're well enough to be working again... though I have a few reports on my desk that tell me that you may not have been resting that whole time."

Qech smiled sarcastically as she sat down. "Guilty as charged."

"I have a few things I'd like to discuss with you before we get back under way. Topping my list is Lieutenant Calodan."

She had been expecting this. She knew the issue with Calodan's insubordination hadn't been discussed purely because she'd been off-duty. She'd spent so much time with him during shore leave, and while he was pleasant enough, he was definitely distracted; a constant reminder of this conversation to come.

"I assume we're talking about the issue with the warp field. I've spoken with him about it, so I know the story from his perspective at least. I didn't envy you the task of reprimanding him. Not one bit... I hate doing that stuff myself."

"Please Yeoman. Can I get you anything? I'm just enjoying a coffee myself, watching the stars a bit." He gestured to the seat across from him and watched the Caitian join him. She was an interesting person to watch move; her feline grace made for an almost beautiful way of moving.

The Captain smirked and sat back in his chair, bridging his fingers as he looked across the desk to his trusted right hand. His unease at the situation was clear to see on his face, a sign to his professionalism -- or at least that's what he would like to believe.

"That's why they sat me in the Big Chair... I get to make all the tough call. Isn't disciplining the crew your job though?" he smiled, and shot her a friendly look. "In all seriousness, am I being too hard on him? We're all alone out here, I can't just call Guardian to offload our troubled Officers and we certainly can't turn around to let them off at DS9... I want to help him, Davynn but look at what happened.

Ensign Ulog nodded and stepped away from the Lieutenant and returned to his duty station. The Tellarite was more than a little disappointed that he couldn't coax anymore out of the Romulan, but then again Uvek wasn't exactly known around the crew for his openness. Oh well he thought to himself as he began to go over the numbers for the fast approaching warp trials, At least he's confidant Jim'll be back.

Several minutes had passed since Commander Qech had stepped into the Captain's Ready Room. Lieutenant Uvek remained in command of the Bridge while the two top officers went over the business of the day. The command center of the Hartington, while not as busy as it would be during normal operations, was still bustling with activity. And so it was unnoticed by all when Ambassador Rolen stepped onto the Bridge, taking up a position near one of the aft science stations to simply watch.

M'Rowl shook her head, her mane-like hair shaking with her body as she did so.

"Oh no, Lieutenant, I'm not thirsty. I actually just came by to see how you were holding up. I understand that you've been down here a lot since we returned from the surface... did you enjoy our time with the Myosians?"

Jim took a sip of his coffee, considering the Yeoman in front of him. "I'm off duty Yeoman, relieved of it in fact. Its Jim or Arjim. " He paused to gauge her reaction, then continued "I enjoyed visiting the Myosians. They have a beautiful world and are incredibly pleasant. Captain Peor, the freighter captain we assisted when we were sent off to get dilithium, treated me to a meal with his family."

He finished his mug of coffee and set it down on the table in front of him. He was wearing civilian clothes, a sweater and gray slacks. After a moment's thought, he stopped to pick at a bit of lint that had collected on his sweater. "I like the lounge, it is a good place to think. I've had a lot to think about and at the risk of sounding melodramatic needed some time to think about it." He looked up at M'Rowl and gave her a slight smile. "How have you been since our trip planet side?"

Location: Sickbay, USS Hartington

Chief Engineer Ghan entered Sickbay, his porcine head frantically looking around for Doctor Kiv. His breathing was quick, his beady eyes bloodshot and his left hand grasping at his right, holding on for dear life. When he could not immediately see the Bajoran doctor, he thundered into the triage area, huffing and near-snorting as he spoke.

"I need to speak with Doctor Kiv, immediately!"

Nurse D'hala had been resupplying the medkits when Ghan stormed in. She looked to the frantic Tellarite with as much compassion as she could bring to bear... it was a well known fact aboard Hartington that Lieutenant Ghan was something of a hypochondriac -- more so after having been through any sort of medical ordeal. As calmly as she could manage she replied to Ghan.

"Doctor Kiv is off duty today, is there something I can help you with, Lieutenant?"

Ghan's massive head shook from side to side, adamant about seeing his own doctor.

"Do you have a medical degree, Nurse D'hala?"

"No Lieutenant, but I..."

"Then find me someone who does!"

D'hala took in a sharp breath, trying her hardest not to be insulted... He's a Tellarite, D'hala get a handle on it...

"One moment, Lieutenant."

The Denobulan tapped her combadge and called out for assistance.

"Doctor Azmay, please report to Sickbay."

Location: Deck 7 Counselor's Office, USS Hartington

The Hartington's Chief Counselor, Lieutenant Solek, hummed softly to himself as he strode down the corridor towards Lieutenant Zeara's Office. Since taking up the duties of Diplomatic Officer, Lieutenant Zeara had not seen any of the ship's other counselors, something that seemed distinctively illogical from his perspective. He rapped a knuckle on the door chimes outside Zeara's Office and awaited a reply.

Qech leaned back in her chair a bit, considering the question. It was a tough spot to be sure. She looked to the Captain, overcoming (for now) her familiar habit of biting on her lip as she answered.

"I believe the reprimand was necessary Captain. In all honesty, I can't see where I would have done any differently. But it is difficult, from the position of someone who was not present when it happened, and who has had no exposure to the situation other than to see Calodan's reaction, to say that it's not being carried a bit too far." She paused for a moment, then continued in an effort to clarify a bit.

"Sir, I understand the horrible conditions that his actions have brought down. And I know you did the right thing, for him and the crew. I suppose you'll just need to look at the reasons why you didn't let him go in the first place. You need him. The crew needs him. But he will always have the event to look back upon, and never the luxury of being able to change it. No one can change it. But if the incident isn't put behind him quickly, it will change Calodan. I'm not entirely sure why he was taken off duty Sir, but if things don't return to normal for him... as normal as they can after such a thing... He'll only dwell on it. And that's bad. I can guarantee you, that sort of guilt will take away the Officer you sought to keep in the first place."

She took a deep breath, and sat forward, finishing her point. "I think he's made that mistake for the last time."

Location: The Team Room, USS Hartington

M'Rowl watched Calodan as he spoke, her feline eyes locked right onto him, never straying away. After he finished speaking she sat there for several seconds, watching. Finally she spoke again, trying to help the mentally wounded Officer.

"I've been busy, the Captain is down two of his most important Officers... do you think you're ready to return to duty, Jim?"

Location: Captain's Ready Room, USS Hartington

The Captain sat up at Qech's mention of Calodan having been taken off duty. His brow wrinkled and his eyes narrowed in confusion.

"I didn't take Jim off duty, I only reprimanded him. Come to think of though, I haven't seen him lately... I just assumed that he had taken on another shift during leave, avoiding me or something like that..."

Quickly the Captain tapped his computer console to life, bringing up the crew rotation for the past two weeks. His head shook as it became clear as day what had happened. He muttered under his breath but just loud enough for his First Officer to hear.

"I can't believe her..."

Qech couldn't help but look confused, but it didn't last very long. She only knew of one person who would go around the Captain like that...

"M'Rowl?..." She shook her head. "That would explain a lot. It seemed a bit out of character for you."

"I've been busy, the Captain is down two of his most important Officers... do you think you're ready to return to duty, Jim?"

Calodan laughed, not a pleasant laugh, but a bitter one. "To be honest M'Rowl, I am considering not returning to duty at all. The only reason I haven't put in a request for an extended leave is that there is no where for me to go. This is my second career-damaging move in just over 2 years. At this point, I'm luck to still be a Lieutenant and I'll never go any further." He paused and looked down into his now empty mug. "I've been considering going back to Trill and going through the surgery to separate from the symbiont. With so many qualified hosts, maybe I am not the best match any more."

He looked back up at the Yeoman. "And let's be honest, do I even have a duty to return to? The Captain relieved me of duty without even notifying me of his decision to do so. That pretty clearly spells out his feelings about my service."
