M'Rowl shook her head and stepped out from the shade of the tree and into the sun. She spoke to Qech, her voice soft with a knowing quality to it.

"He just needs time to take in what has happened, Davynn. He is carrying a great deal of guilt and he has no one he feels he can vent to... could you talk to a Counselor about this kind of thing? This leave will do him some good. Give him the time he needs to heal up properly. I hear he wanted to take on additional duty shifts during the leave..."

"I can relate to that. I have a tendency to drown myself in work when there are things I don't want to think about. I expect he's much the same in that respect." She sighed. "He does need this time. The only reason I'm not working is because I can't, and clearly that's his only reason too, otherwise he would be... endlessly."

She looked up at M'Rowl, putting a hand up across her eyes to block out the sun. "It's good that he's off-duty. He'd just burn himself out. What I don't agree with is how it happened. No explanation. It almost seemed to have been done out of spite, just to poor salt in the wound."

Qech shook her head, and said silently to herself: "It just doesn't seem like David to do something like that..."

Some time passes and Calodan comes over the hill, his book under his arm. "So ladies, ready for some lunch? All of this sunshine and fresh air has me starving."

He set his book inside the shuttlepod and came back out with a cooler full of food and a blanket. He spread the blanket out on the ground and started setting out containers of food. "Chef definitely went a bit overboard."

M'Rowl looked to Qech and nodded, taking her place on the ground.

"I don't know about Davynn here, but I am always famished. You both may not know this about Caitians, but we have very fast metabolisms. It does seem to go against part of our genetic heritage I suppose... predators needed to wait for long periods of time before feeding." She shrugged and poked around the packed lunch, "One of those quirks I guess."

Calodan opened a container of potato salad and smelled it. Dill, mustard, and celery filled his nose. "Well, I suspect that the Chef made sure there was plenty for us to eat." He dished some of the potato salad out onto a dish before offering it to the other two.

"Maybe after lunch, we can play a game of some form? I brought along a frisbee, an old Earth toy used to play catch. I used to play with one as a kid and it would be a waste to miss great weather like this without throwing it around some."

Qech slowly got up from her spot by the tree and made herself comfortable on the blanket, looking down at all the food. She wasn't surprised to see a plate of double-fudge brownies among the over-stocked desserts. She smiled. "Was he packing for a family of eight?" She looked at each of her companions and couldn't help but to consider her words. "Although, I suppose between your metabolism, M'Rowl, and Calodan and I both supporting more than one life-form... In my case, three... well, I guess maybe he wasn't being overly cautious."

"I haven't seen on of those in ages. Sounds like fun." She grinned.

She helped herself to some cold cuts and started fixing up a sandwich for herself, being careful to stick closely to the strict nutritional diet Dr. Kiv had placed her on. As she busied herself with the food, she looked over at Calodan. "You know, that book looks very much like the one you gave me for Christmas. Did you bind that one yourself?"

"Did you bind that one yourself?"

"Yes I did. I find it easier to appreciate literature when it is presented on paper. There is something about the weight of a book, the smell of the bindings. I looked the process up in the computer. I have a collection of my favorites that I hand bound. That one is The Dream of the Fire by K'Ratak. A friend recommended it to me, a classic Klingon work. It is very good. If you'd like to borrow it, I'd be more then happy to loan it."

Qech ate quietly (being one who would never speak with her mouth full... That's just disgusting), and then eyed the brownies that were sitting atop the cooler. She sighed, realizing there was just no way she had room for them, and took the pill-form of the nutrient supplements that Dr. Kiv had given her.

She shook her head as she stared at the plate. "At the very least, the Tal'Harton owe me some brownies" she said, scowling. Being able to shut my eyes again would be nice, too she thought.
