Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington

While the navigation stations alerts Lieutenant Croft to Hartington's approach to the nebula, the rest of the Bridge Officers have had a very quiet day's travel. All in all, it has been a pleasant change of events from the recent disasters.

The Pahkwa-thanh Science Officer, Lieutenant Rhak, looks up from his station and across the Bridge to Commander Qech who had been on the bridge the majority of the day.

"Commander, we're getting sensor resolution from the Nebula, however I may need control over the main sensor grid for some time to complete my scans. I won't know until we've come to a stop and am able to have a clearer look."

Ambassador Rolen, who had spent his day coming and going -- and was in one of his more bothersome moods -- stood off to the side of the command chair. While the Vorta diplomat was entirely too dignified to roll his eyes, his voice was laced in enough disdain for the scientific nature of the Hartington's current mission he had no need to.

"Commander, what possibly value can the exploration of a common nebula have to our mission? I can tell you from personal experience that the Dominion has charted no fewer than 238 Dark Matter Nebulae in our local area and they are almost all the same. I'm sure if we were to search the Federation's records we would find that your people have discovered the same thing."

Ensign Ulog sat at the Bridge Engineering Station and shook his head at the Vorta's comments, clearly disgusted with the Ambassador's lack of understanding of Starfleet and the Hartington's mission in the Gamma Quadrant.

"If you don't understand, Mr. Ambassador, then I doubt that we can adequately explain ourselves to you. Frankly, I'm surprised that you can cite the Dominion's scientific exploits, I was under the impression that the Founders were only interested in expanding their empire."

Rolen's face twisted in shock -- whether it was true or mocking couldn't be discerned, a mark of a truly talented actor. The Ambassador's head turned to look at the Tellarite Ensign, his icy eyes locking onto the Engineer.

"Your lack of understanding wounds me, Ensign. After all these months of working side by side with the Federation, I would have thought that your opinions of me and my people would have changed." his head shakes from side to side as he turns back towards Qech, "I am deeply saddened."

Qech turned in her chair to face Ensign Ulog. "We'll keep our stereotypes to ourselves Ensign. There's no place for that attitude on the bridge, or on the Hartington for that matter." With that, she turned to the surly vorta, a slight grin on her face. "Dark Matter Nebula, number 239 it is, Ambassador."

Assured that she'd shut both of them up as properly as she could, she turned to Lt. Rhak and smiled. "Science will have every opportunity to look around once we've gotten closer, Lieutenant, I promise."

With that, the Commander tapped her combadge. "Qech to Captain Brennon. We're approaching the Nebula."

Uvek smirked at the back-and-forth but kept his head in his work. Just because they were on a scientific mission and right now there appeared to be no dangers, the ship was always in strange territory. Anything could happen. Despite Lt. Rhak's concerns for sensor allocation, he knew tactical would always have the right-of-way. He ran through another series of local sweeps, and turned to his right-hand man, Ensign Phell.

"Ensign, bring up the warp field attenuation results and correlate them with the energy output of the nebula, see if there are any negative results." The ensign nodded and put his hands to the auxiliary tactical station. Uvek and Phell were operating on a closer level lately, since Phell's self-confidence had been raised he seemed more willing to take the initiative and be more open to suggestions. Uvek liked the change in him and, as a result, loosened the reins a bit. Their conversation was more open, more easy and more effective.

"Sensor results are negative, Commander," he reported to Qech. "All normal."

Ensign Ulog sunk back down into his seat and nodded towards Qech, clearly having learned his lesson -- at least on the surface.

"Understood, Ma'am."

Rolen on the other hand smiled smugly at the First Officer's apparent backing of his position, if not his ideals.

"239 indeed, Commander."

"Qech to Captain Brennon. We're approaching the Nebula."
Through the com system, the Captain's voice answered Qech's declaration.

"Understood, Commander, begin sensor analysis and keep me informed."

Qech nodded to Uvek, a slight smile on her face. "I don't know if you sounded relieved or disappointed, Lieutenant."

Then the Captain's response hummed through her combadge:

"Understood, Commander, begin sensor analysis and keep me informed."

Qech turned to the Ops station. "Lieutenant Calodan, please transfer the necessary additional power to the sensor grid. Let's give Science some breathing room. Lieutenant Rhak, work your magic."

Sitting in her quarters she listened to the message from her sister one more time as she stared at the glass of jack and coke she held in her hand.

With a sigh she drank the last of the glass and stood. Leaving her quarters she didn't make eyecontact with a single person as she navigated her way to the turbo lift and then to the holodeck.

I just need some focus... she thought to herself as she set a program into the computer.

"Computer, run program Zeara-Earth 3" she said and smiled as the room transformed.

USS Hartington Bridge
Xavier Croft

Croft steered the vessel to the coordinates science had given him as their desired optimal survey position. It wasn't the most ideal mission in Croft's book, but he understood it couldn't all be evasive actions and meteor showers. "Commander, approaching optimal scan distance."

Corridor/Holodeck 3

Karl Koester went on his rounds of the Hartington. Thinking of Andi as directed by the Counselor had brought a lot of memories he didn't want to think of.

Trying to compose that other entry for the week of memories of Andi before the Cardassians murdered her had been more than he could bear. He had sent two hundred and seventy-two Cardassians to their graves on Dantana but he couldn't fill the hollow void.

He went onto the Holodeck and said: "Computer. Run program Koester 3."

He saw the vast Russian wilderness before him. Forested terrain where wolves and bears still roamed and falcons flew through the air. He began to run along a trail until he reached a clearing.

A holographic Cardassian stood on the other side of it. Koester turned having sighted his prey and the two opponents moved probing one another. The Cardassian went for the first attack and had taken Koester somewhat by surprise. Koester brought a thumb into the Cardie's eye socket before bringing his knee into the man's sternum.

The Cardassian staggered backward before taking a knee into the crotch. Koester knocked the Cardassian down and then applied his knee in pressure to the Cardassian's throat.

"Nas nikto nikogda ne pobedit. (Russian: You don't mess with us!)" Koester shouted at his simulated foe. The face of the enemy that had taken his beloved away...

Actually, neither did Uvek. Truth be told, after the beating he took from the Tal'harton, he was quite looking forward to a non-event. However, his sense of adventure, desire for revenge and the drive for adrenaline left him hungry for more. Still, this wasn't a total loss. He was able to work in some tactical drills again, and get back on schedule with his personal defense training. He had been working with Karl koester, who seemed more distracted than usual, but still had been able to give Uvek a new style to focus on.

He smiled to himself. Perhaps the Nebula would attack them and alleviate the boredom. Well, that was not only too much to hope for, it was probably morbid as well.

ACTION

The next two hours pass uneventfully as Stellar Sciences continues their scan of the Nebula. All around the Bridge, the various crewmen not involved in the scientific study are left with little to do except wait. For his part, the Captain has remained in the Ready Room, most likely hiding out from the boredom of the current mission.

Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington

As the night wears on Gamma Shift starts to file onto the Bridge, ready to relieve Beta Shift. Lieutenant Solana, the Gamma Shift Commander for the evening, approached Commander Qech with a PADD in hand. The Vulcan looked down to Executive Officer as she spoke.

"Commander, I am here to relieve you."

Across the Bridge, Ensign Thompson stepped up to Lieutenant Uvek, his hand extending his own PADD towards the Security Chief.

"Sir, here is the breakdown of the drills we we conducted today. I think you'll be happy to note that we've cut or best times nearly in half."

***

Location: Outside Holodecks

Counselor Solek looked at the display next to the doors of Holodecks One and Two, unsure exactly how to proceed from here. Two patients, both equally in need of my help, both delving into escapism via an artificial environment... what a dilemma. How to proceed?

***

Location: Sickbay, USS Hartington

Doctor Kiv sat in her office reading over the reports from Lieutenant Ghan's most recent overreaction. She chuckled to herself as she though of the portly Tellarite reduced nearly to tears over a little hair. It would grow back of course, it would just take time... she had told him so much when the skin regeneration was completed, but Tellarites -- especially this Tellarite -- had a difficult time hearing such things during traumatic experiences. What's a Doctor to do? she mused as she clicked off the monitor and stepped out into Sickbay proper.

"Doctor Newell," she started, "Have you completed the check on the EMH?"

"Commander, I am here to relieve you."

Qech struggled to suppress a yawn as she stood. She was the victor, but not by much. "And believe me, I am relieved." With a nod to her substitute she turned and left the bridge, eager to get something to eat. Visions of fudge brownies danced in her head as she made her way to the mess hall.

Uvek nodded and smiled at the LT. "Thank you, Lieutenant. I appreciate that. Take over here, please. I need to get some rest." In truth Uvek was very pleased with the drill reports, he just had difficulty releasing his emotions. In fact, since his encounter with Dr. T'Lau he found it increasingly less easy. He wondered if he hadn't taken something extra away from that time in her mind-meld.

At any rate, it was time to take a break.

Outside Holodeck 2

Koester came out of the holodeck just then. He was in a somewhat better mood. Delving into the past and remembering Andi had dredged up more emotions than he cared to recall. Why had counselor Zaera recommended that exercise?

He'd ended his simulation of running through the Russian wilderness with the biting sting of its mid autumn air. He went out into the corridor where he saw Counselor Solek waiting outside.

"Lieutenant." Koester said. The wildness from running through the obstacle course where at random he fought and killed at least three simulated Cardassians subsided as he walked outside.

Qech arrived at her quarters with an already half-finished bowl of soup in her hand, deciding to put the brownies out of her mind. She had not been sleeping well as it was without adding copious amounts of refined sugar to the mix.

"Lights."

Setting the bowl aside, she sat down on the bed, determined to have at least one night of uninterrupted sleep. The nightmares had only gotten progressively worse as her mind dredged up new memories of her torture on a nightly basis.

Maybe I just need something to relax she thought, making her way to the bookshelf and selecting one that she had been meaning to look at since first receiving it. She ran her hand over the soft leather binding, a smile on her face as she recalled the meaning behind the gift. True, it was a children's story, but Taj- at least in a previous incarnation- had written it, and that made it special.

Qech made herself comfortable beneath the covers and started reading.

The nightmares began again before she even realized she'd fallen asleep.
