Time: last day of shore leave, the Hartington is getting ready to depart on the next morning.

Location: Captain's Ready Room

Uvek tapped the chime and waited for the captain to answer. It was the first time since his abuse by the Tal'harton that he would speak to the captain, and he actually looked forward to it for several reasons. Foremost was his respect for the man, gained in the recent months of service under him. In addition, Uvek thought that he was about to make a significant contribution to the ship, and he looked forward to fulfilling the true nature of his position as tactical officer.

In his hand was a silver cylinder, roughly a meter long and a foot wide. It had a molded handle and what appeared to be two chambers on either side, running the length of the device and ending in a singluar chamber just before the handle. On the handle was a button marked "intermix" along with a second button marked "fire". The opposite end contained two small nozzles, side-by-side, each of which came out of its corresponding chamber. There appeared to be small vents near the rear of the device, sitting on the singular chamber.

In all the device weighed a kilogram and Uvek hefted it easily, wondering what the captain would make of it.

Uvek shifts position. Even a kilogram starts feeling heavy after a moment or two. No doubt the captain has his hands full, but it was time for his tactical officer to report for duty.

He had read the duty logs an hour ago, and was familiar with everything that had happened. He was also relieved to hear Commander Qech was on the surface, enjoying a moment of respite. Good for her. Even Ensign Phell had risen to the challenge, given half a chance. There was scuttlebutt about Calodan, but nothing specific. Only the records to indicate the aftermath of the ship's escape from the tunnel. Uvek felt he could relate to Calodan, and set his mind to seek him out when the time came.

They were shaping up nicely, this crew. Uvek was proud to part of it and grateful to the Admiral who made it possible, and the captain who took a chance on a Romulan defector.

Captain Brennon looked up from the report that M'Rowl had just dropped off... Damn you Qech, you're told to rest and you just have to work! So stubborn!. He shook his head as he set the PADD aside. After tapping his computer console and checking his chrono he realized that M'Rowl had scheduled this part of his day completely empty... it was Shore Leave after all and she was a bit of a mother hen. More than a little curious, Brennon called out to the mystery guest on the other side of the door.

"Come in."

(OOC: I will post the whole reason for Uvek, and allow cut-n-paste as you see fit, sir) IC:

Uvek gratefully walked into the room, device in hand, and stood at attention. "Captain, Lt. Uvek reports. I have been cleared for duty and working primarily in Ops and bridge watch until Lt. Calodan is cleared for duty." He moves forward and lays the silver device on the captain's desk. "This is the real reason for my visit, sir. It relates directly to our past encounters with the Tal'harton. During my...encounter with them, I learned some things about them that I think will be useful. Primarily that they are serpentine and as such, use and rely on heat for their metabolism."

"I call this device the Cryonic Emitter. There are two elements that are relatively common in our atmosphere: Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide. These elements are extremely cold in their solid state. Inside the Emitter, there are two tubes full of solid Helium and a couple of bags of liquid Helium. These are very, very cold; so cold that they can induce a change called deposition, in which a gas changes directly to a solid. The Emitter takes in Nitrogen and/or Carbon Dioxide, freezes it, and then fires it at high speeds as a compressed gas or, depending on the mixture, a solid projectile. It has to “inhale” before firing. Vents on the weapon open when it is charged, as gas is needed to fuel the blast."

"This raises questions regarding how it works in a vacuum, or on a planet with an atmosphere that doesn’t contain Nitrogen or Carbon Dioxide. This can easily be solved, however. Before the “inhaled’ air hits the Helium tubes, it passes through a storage compartment. This compartment can hold enough gas to power a couple of shots. Once that runs out, the weapon will use the liquid Helium as ammo, and finally, the two tubes of solid Helium. After that, the user’s out of luck."

"The Cryonic Emitter can alternately penetrate an enemy, or pull the liquids inside of a creature to the outside of it’s skin which would cover enemies in a bluish clear frozen state when the gas contacts them. It damages them at the same time because of the severe dehydration. Enemies that do not freeze from contact or take multiple hits may either have a high resistance to the beam or replace the fluids quickly and require multiple hits to further dehydrate them. It is possible that smaller creatures would tend to die faster from the weapon because they have less fluids than the larger ones."

"It is weakened thermal energy, meaning it completely slows down the atomic movement around it to a very low amount, creating extreme cold. It leaves a white trail behind the shot, which is more than likely not matter falling off of it, but the air around it freezing, then falling. What you’re seeing is most likely the weakened thermal energy being concentrated, “cold” energy, if you will, like all other charges. The emitter has an effective firing range of 10 meters as gas, or 50 meters as a solid projectile."

"Finally, captain, it is possible to place this technology in a polycarbonate "mine", transport it aboard their ships with a short timing fuse, crack the casing, and expose an entire room to the gas cloud. It conceivably changes the dynamics of any encounter, provided we can get it through their shields. In addition an inertia guided, magnometric system could attach this to their hulls, and penetrate their ships from the outside."

He steps back, anxiously awaiting his captain's response.

The Captain sat listening intently to his Tactical Officer as he explained the rather unseemly device planted in front of him. After the dissertation was completed, Brennon sat in silence for several moments, absorbing the information presented. Finally, he spoke.

"So, let me see if I understand you correctly, Lieutenant. During your time with the Tal'Harton you took the opportunity to study them in an attempt to ascertain their weaknesses. Building upon this you've concocted this device which is specifically designed to incapacitate, or more likely, kill a Tal'Harton target. Does that about sum it up, Mr. Uvek?"

"Actually, during my time with the Tal'harton, I was unaware of much of my surroundings in a material way." Replied Uvek, a tinge of regret in his voice. "The synaptic induction caused several side effects, including a segregation of my mind, sir. Subconsciously I was gathering details that my conscious mind could not."

"It wasn't until I was in the barracks of the Tal'harton station that I became aware of the environment we were in, the treatment of other prisoners there, and the need for a method to capture, slow or yes, kill these creatures. It wasn't until I was here, in sickbay, that the formulation of this idea came to fruition." He looked down at the weapon and continued.

"Sir, despite their space-faring technology, this race is primative in their designs and they are enslaving and abusing everything in their path, including us, much like the Borg and even the dominion. Clearly our technology to date has not impressed them. With this device and alterations to it, we can effectively keep them at bay with non lethal combinations or failing that, at least demonstrate a reason for them to fear us for once. As with any reptile cold should do it. I offer it as an alternative in the hopes of tipping the balance of our encounters. I have read the duty logs and with their transporter weakness a cold weapon along the lines of the 'mine' I suggest, with the proper gas combination, could very easily sway their intentions while leaving their crew intact."

Uvek was wondering what the captain was thinking. The long moments before his responses indicated a thinking man. Conversely they could torment someone waiting before the commanding officer to receive their fate. He shifted his footing and stood pensive and alert.

Captain Brennon nodded as his eyes moving to the device. They lingered on the cylinder for a moment before speaking he spoke up again.

"It isn't that I don't approve of your enthusiasm, Lieutenant, but I don't think that this is an appropriate choice at the moment. Keep it, we may yet need it but for the time we'll try to let diplomacy and our more conventional offenses prevail. Understood?"

Uvek stood still for a moment. He had not expected that response. Of course, the captain had not endured what his senior officers had first-hand, so....

"Very well, captain." he responded, picking up the cryonic emitter. "Thank you for your time."

Crestfallen he moved back out of the room and down to his quarters. Ah well, back to the drawing board.
