Qech tapped her combadge again.

"Qech to Lt. Uvek. There's an unknown ship in the vicinity, and we're moving in for a closer look. Be advised in case they're less than friendly."

She lowered her voice slightly before continuing "you don't need to come to the bridge, however. I don't want to estrange the entire gamma shift." There was a slight note of humor in her voice, but she wasn't entirely joking. Even if he wasn't on the bridge, she felt better knowing the Chief Tactical Officer was in the know.

The Romulan appreciated the commander's sensitivities. "Understood, Commander, thank you." He rolled over, trying to sleep again, but knowing he wouldn't. His visit with Croft and others in the lounge earlier had considerably lifted his spirits and he didn't really need the rest anyway. He got up and dressed, just in case.

"Ensign, you did a very good job trying to decipher this cryptic mess of a transmission." Calodan said to Ulog. "I'm going to try running a few low pass filters and do some transformations on the waveforms to see if we can clear up some of the static. I would appreciate a hand."

narrowing her eyes at him, she raised an eyebrow and shook her head.

"Uh-huh." she said sarcastically then chuckld. "You have a point though, we should continue this in a more... professional setting." she said and waited for him to lead the way.

It felt strange to her to be the one being asked to speak, instead of asking others to speak... then again, even counselors need someone to talk to.

I really need to find more friends on this crew... she thought to herself.

"If you'll not be need me sir I'll be in the security office." Koester said as he headed down the hallway.

Koester went into the office and checked one of his consoles. He noticed a small note about an unidentified ship before tapping his comm badge: "Koester to LT Uvek. I recently received word of an unidentified ship via a security console readout. I'm going to put security on standby just in case we get another boarding attempt..."

Uvek was reading sensor data pulled from the bridge when the PO called in.

"Very good, Mr. Koester. Try to keep it as informal as possible. We don't want to spook the crew."

He liked the initiative Koester was showing, and was determined to get to know the man better. He was using the Sambo lessons they had begun off-duty (even though Karl had occasionally and he would say respectfully, delivered some sound blows to the Romulan) and would soon seek additional opportunities to interact with the man. Keeping his staff busy was a full time job for Uvek, but keeping their morale up brought a whole new dimension to the job. It was something a solitary man like Uvek had never experienced before, and he spent several hours a week studying management skills in the computer library.

ACTION

The Hartington maneuvers into the nebula as her crew works to discover the identity of the mystery ship discovered inside, as well as to unscramble the received message recently received. The partial density of the dark matter cloud prevented the starship's sensors from achieving a solid lock on the other vessel, causing a dilemma as Warrant Officer Kalev called up from Main Engineering.

"Bridge, the impulse manifolds are having a difficult time with the nebular gasses, I'm not sure exactly how much further we can go before they overload and we're force to come to a stop."

Lieutenants Solana and Rhak conversed quietly around the Science Station as Kalev gave his report. Before Qech had a chance to make any decisions, the Science Officers spoke up.

"Commander," started Solana, "We cannot afford to turn back now, if we do we may not discover who those people are or if they need our assistance."

"No one asked for our assistance, Lieutenant." Came the voice of Ambassador Rolen, seemingly appearing as if from thin air at the aft section of the Bridge.

While none of the crewmen present turned away from their duties -- save for Rolen, who had no duties -- all eyes seemed to be upon Qech, who now had a decision to make.

Calodan tapped at the console again, frustrated. He and Ensign Ulog had gotten no where on trying to decipher the transmission.

"Commander," he said swiveling to face Qech. "There is no way we're going to be able to clear up this message. It is just too garbled."

Qech listened to all sides of the situation, but came to her conclusion quickly, much to the disappointment of the science department.

"Helm, all stop."

As the Helmsman complied, Qech turned to face Solara, an apologetic expression on her face. "Sorry Lieutenant. I know how important these scans are to the Science Department, but I won't risk the ship over a morbid curiosity." She offered a smile. "On the plus side, we're deeper in the nebula than we were. See what you can pick up from here, if anything. But this is as far as we go unless engineering can work around the problem."

Ensign zh'Rel instantly reacted to Qech's command, tapping in the command to bring Hartington to a halt.

"Answering All Stop, Commander."

Across the Bridge, the two Science Officers looked unhappy at the development -- at least if they were easy to read they would. Solana's Vulcan exterior did not betray her emotions save for an upturned eyebrow. If the emotional state of a Vulcan was difficult to read by facial expressions alone, Rhak's Saurian features were impossible. The only sign of his distaste was the quiet snapping of his jaws as Qech issued her orders.

"On the plus side, we're deeper in the nebula than we were. See what you can pick up from here, if anything."

Quietly, both officers turned back to their work, preforming more detailed scans of the nebula. After several minutes of quiet work, Lieutenant Rhak stood and looked to Qech, his head bowed in deference.

"Commander, may I have permission to leave the Bridge? I believe I will be able to better accomplish this task in the astrometrics laboratory."

"But this is as far as we go unless engineering can work around the problem."

Calodan heard the commander and turned back to his console. With Ensign Ulog manning the main ops station, Calodan was free to work on other things. With a few commands, the console reset itself back to it's stock configuration. Now seated at Engineering 2, he began working on a way around the nebular gasses clogging the impulse manifolds. A few searches of the main computer

"Commander, I believe I may have a work around to the impulse manifold problem. The Enterprise, NX-01 to be exact, had similar issues when they first encountered the Robinson Nebula, a dark matter nebula very similar to this one. Their Chief Engineer, a Commander Tucker, managed to outfit a shuttlepod with specially shielded and charged intake manifolds. Now, the technique is several hundred years old..but the theory is sound. I think that we could use the shields to mimic his design and allow forward propulsion."

"Commander, may I have permission to leave the Bridge? I believe I will be able to better accomplish this task in the astrometrics laboratory."

Qech nodded as an answer, turning her attention to Calodan and Ulog. "It was worth a shot in trying to clear the message up anyway. I appreciate the effort." She sighed. "Well let's hope it wasn't a distress signal... or worse."

The Commander didn't go into detail as to what constituted as "worse"... The list was just too long, and everyone on the bridge would be able to draft their own version of it for themselves, depending on their experiences. Sensing there was very little that could be done at the moment aside from wait, she took a seat, wondering vaguely if any chance of sleep that night would be possible now.

Ah well, she thought. It's not as though I was looking forward to dreaming anyhow...

Qech turned to face Calodan when he started speaking, shaking her out of her reverie. She smiled, remembering why she'd called him to the bridge in the first place. No offense to Ulog of course...

"By all means, Lieutenant, put the theory to the test."

"Yes sir." Koester replied.

Within fifteen minutes Koester had put several extra security personnel roaming the ship discretely. He also had a couple rifle armed details at key points on the ship.

"Sir. I've increased patrols and have pulled some personnel from second shift to cover manpower vacancies." Koester said when he contacted Uvek again.

"By all means, Lieutenant, put the theory to the test."

"Yes Sir." He tapped some commands on the console and then his commbadge. "Calodan to Lt. Ghan. I've been looking at some possible shield and deflector modifications that could help protect the impulse manifolds as we move through the nebula. I've sent the data to you. I'd appreciate if you could review it and make any additions you deem necessary before we implement the procedure."

"Very good. I'm moving to the security office." replied Uvek. He left his quarters, still reading updated information on a PADD. He entered the turbolift and said simply "Brig." The lift quietly delivered him to the security level and he exited, making his way straight to the office.

All around him men and women were moving and serious. Phell met him at the security office door and waited for Uvek to enter before moving in behind him.

"What do we know, sir?" he asked, his breather spewing moisture onto his mouth and nose. Uvek nodded his head.

"Nothing much. Ship in the void, no word on type, no discernable message. So, we're just waiting." He tapped his combadge. "Uvek to Koester, please meet me in the security office. See if you can round up Mr. Smith. Phell, why don't you go to the auxiliary bridge and stand by. We can always use another body there, I'll send Mavers with you."

The Benzite officer replied and moved off quickly. Uvek settled in to await Koester, and see what might develop.
