Uvek sat back, breathing heavily and sweating. "FVADT!" He cursed, not for the first time during the session. The med tech working with him in the sickbay rehab center stepped back, waiting for the Romulan's customary outburst to subside. In a moment it did and Uvek looked sheepishly at the ensign while shaking his head.

"I just cannot make sense of it. The hand works perfectly, but I cannot feel anything. It throws me off when I try to lift it." He indicated the mock Teral'n. He had insisted that it be the object of choice he used to acclimate to the prostethetic arm due to the sensitive nature of the weapon both in form and function. He had been trying to master the simple thrust and parry, but failing miserably.

It was the last of the first week. The nurse shook his head. "Perhaps you are trying too hard, Lieutenant." He ventured. Uvek shook his head.

Too hard? To regain his self-confidence, his control? NEVER. The crew had been supportive, the captain dutifully concerned, and Commander Qech was a regular visitor, checking on his progress. To them, the Romulan was displaying remarkable tenacity. To Uvek, he was Romulan and while Romulans cared for the infirm, they did not maintain them in the military. The Federation was not the empire, but Uvek was still Romulan nonetheless.

He was in for a long road. He stood and looked at the medical man. "I need a break. I am going to my quarters to enjoy some tea. We will resume this tomorrow. Here." He tossed the wooden replica over and headed out to his quarters.

Location: Deck 2, outside Lt. Uvek's Quarters.
Time: One week after the Hartington's encounter with the Federation Time Fleet

Qech rang the chime to Uvek's quarters. She knew he usually took his tea around this time, and decided to pay him a visit before heading off to the holosuite. His answer was slightly strained, so she entered the room with a particularly bright smile on her face, hoping to cheer the Romulan up a little bit.

"Afternoon, Lieutenant. I hope I'm not intruding." Her smile was genuine and caring, and her concern for her friend showed in her eyes. "How are you feeling?"

Uvek was actually relieved it was Qech at his door. Her visits kept his spirits up. He returned her smile. His eyes were rimmed with the shadows of black from a lack of sleep.

"I am well. Care for some tea? I ration the Christmas tea you gave me, which has turned out to be a good thing." He moved to the table, reached under it and produced a second cup from the glass shelf. As he poured the tea he grimaced and spilled a small amount.

"I apologize, Commander. Truth be told, the neural interface has not fully set, and this hand causes me some discomfort. I have been told the more I use it the quicker it will assimilate."

"Care for some tea?"

Qech nodded and sat down. "Sure, I've got time." She watched as he poured it, spilling some on the table as he did so. She felt bad for him, especially since he had sustained the injury defending her in the first place, but she was careful not to register pity on her face. He was still a Romulan after all; a proud race of people who despised that sort of thing.

"I apologize, Commander. Truth be told, the neural interface has not fully set, and this hand causes me some discomfort. I have been told the more I use it the quicker it will assimilate."

She sat forward as she took the tea, offering him a hopeful look; one that could only come from someone who had plenty of experience with these things. "And that you will. I've seen patients adapt quickly to prosthetic limbs who didn't push themselves half as hard as you do." She grinned. "In fact, your tendency to overdo your physical training might just be, in this particular case, a virtue... On a side note, I'm off-duty. Davynn would be fine."

She sat back, sipping the hot tea. It was good, but she didn't want to drink the entire thing. She'd been doing well in kicking her caffeine habit, and didn't want to have to start at square one. One cup of tea won't hurt anything, she thought.

Her mind eventually wandered back to the topic at hand, and she had an idea. "You know, I was just on my way to the holosuite. I have a nice canoeing program that I'm rather fond of. If you'd like to join me, I think the rowing motion, and the sheer dexterity required for the task might be some good physical therapy. Not to mention, it's fun." She smiled again. "What do you say?"

Uvek cocked his head to the side and a look of intrique crossed his face.
"I am not sure I have heard of that beyond Mr. Croft's mentioning of it in his fishing tales. But I accept your gracious invitation." He rose and crossed the room to his closet. When the door opened he reached in and pulled out a Starfleet wetsuit. He turned with a sly grin.

"I apologize that I do not have a swim suit, Davynn, but in all seriousness, you would not want to see me in shorts." He had not been anywhere for the past 5 days beyond the rehab center and his quarters, shunning crew contact and fighting the effects of depression and self-pity. He was a Romulan and despite the circumstances, Uvek had built a life on self reliance. Perhaps it was time to change that, too.

"Give me a moment to prepare, and I will meet you in the Holosuite."

"I apologize that I do not have a swim suit, Davynn, but in all seriousness, you would not want to see me in shorts."

Qech laughed. A very bright, hearty laugh that filled the room. "In case you've forgotten, Mr. Uvek, I'm pregnant. So, you won't catch me running around in a bikini any time soon. I have a wet suit for the program as well." She got up, a smile still firmly set on her face and nodded to her friend.

"I'll be in Holosuite 2."

Uvek was travelling to the holosuite from deck 2, taking pains to avoid people where he could. It was not only the fact that he was struggling to come to grips with his new situation, but it was also the congratulations and thanks that many of the crew, primarily the security staff, gave him throughout the day. He did not feel like a hero, he felt that he had somehow let down his guard.

That the silicone creature that struck him was out of his sightline meant that he was too focused, he had lost sight of his surroundings. That woud never do in his eyes. On top of that, Mavers was dead. Their position in the chamber had somehow compromised their tactical situation. Numbers aside, their TR-116's should have given them a tactical advantage if they had positioned them......NO.

The Romulan tactical officer violently shoved the thoughts aside and focused on the time ahead. He nodded at another crewman passing by who couldn't help looking down at his arm. Uvek ignored it as he arrived at the holosuite.

Davynn was already inside by the appearance of the computer panel, so Uvek approached the door, tapped in a code, and entered, fixing a smile on his face and forgetting the ache in his forearm.

Qech stood up to her knees in the cold water, her back the the arch and repositioning the canoe in the river. The cold didn't bother her- she was Trill, after all- and the crisp breeze felt good on her face. She heard Uvek enter the holosuite and said, without turning around: "I hope you didn't eat too big a lunch. The water is calm now, but..." she turned around, a slight grin on her face. "Did I mention this was a whitewater program?"

Davynn knew the idea wasn't going to bother him, that he was up for something new. She was hopeful that, between the cold and the thrill of the rapids, any pain in his arm would be easily overlooked giving him the freedom to push the prosthetic limb to its fullest capability. She tossed him an ore as he approached the shoreline, and hoisted herself into the canoe. "Hop in... Oh, and watch that rock, the big one there. It's slippery. Found that out the hard way the first time I ran this program."

Just as she pointed out the large rock, the one that looked like a perfect stepping stone, Uvek slipped on it and fell backwards, crashing into the water. For some reason, he subconciously tried to keep the prostethic limb out of the water, but it was useless. He fluttered around and came up spitting, gasping and scrambling for shore.

He spun around and looked at Davynn, his dripping hair hanging loose around his pointed ears. The look on her face was funny. Too funny to ignore in fact, and the shock of the cold water was immediately forgotten as the Romulan burst out in self-deprecating laughter. It was the first laugh in a week's time, perhaps longer, and it felt good.

A moment later, he had helped position the boat and climbed in front, letting the Trill take the tiller. She knew the river by now, and with his arm he felt better just paddling and supporting her. He looked over his shoulder as they paddled forward, the water swirling around them, the birds calling and the breeze blowing. She was clearly pregnant now but there was something fierce and steadfast in her that belied the delicacy of that condition. The Romulan's respect and admiration for her inner strength went up a notch and he was proud and grateful to have helped return her safely to the ship. He turned without a word to fix on the quickening water.

This was going to be a good day.

Davynn sat in the canoe, looking over at Uvek's dripping form on the shore. She blinked, watching him in stunned silence before his face contorted with laughter. She laughed with him, unable to help herself.

"Lesson learned" she said, as he climbed in behind her. "The good ol' fashioned hard-way."

They took the calmer stretch of the river at a good pace, simply enjoying the beauty of it all. She turned briefly too look back at Uvek, just to make sure his dive in the river hadn't made him too cold, but he didn't seem to be shivering. Not surprised, she thought to herself.

Eventually the current began to pick up, white swells forming around the canoe. Qech looked forward, pointing to a large outcropping of smooth rocks ahead where the river almost appeared to come to a dead end.

"There's a really sharp turn up ahead, it will pull us toward the rocks. Start paddling away a good 15 meters before we get there." She didn't look worried. In fact, quite the opposite. There was clear excitement in her voice which became even more pronounced as they grew closer to the bend. "Okay, now!"

Uvek threw himself into the work with gusto. The canoe bucked like a fvai and the Romulan felt a fierce surge of adrenelin. YES! His forehead began to pour sweat and in no time the arm was aching. But it was exactly what he needed. In the rehab center there was little to distract him, little for him to focus on and the pain invaded his concentration. Here, in the heat of action, the spray of the river and the rush of survival, his mind did its job and rose to the challenge.

He laughed hard and loud as he pushed the paddle deep into the river water. The two companions cut around the bend and the water actually picked up pace. Rocks could be seen just beneath the surface and the river narrowed slightly. He sat back for a moment, breathing hard and taking in the view. A pang shot up his arm from just below his elbow, where the artificial met the natural. He kept one hand on the paddle and and flexed his left hand, watching it in wonder.

The bio interface was working well and simulated feelings but Uvek could still see he had a way to go. But Davynn was right, this was perfect excercise. He called ahead.

"Davynn, you were right!" He said over the increasing volume of the water. "I should have thought of this sooner! It's perfect."

"Davynn, you were right! I should have thought of this sooner! It's perfect."

Qech laughed again, the sound practically being sucked up by the wind as it raced past their faces. She had to yell to be heard over the splashing of the canoe as it tore through the roaring rapids.

"Maybe Dr. Kiv will write up a prescription for you!" More laughter. "Feel free to use the program whenever you want!"

They continued their course down the narrowing river as the program offered greater challenges in the form of crashing swells and even small waterfalls. They met them all head-on, the Trill's laughter a constant background, like a second roaring wind. They were both soaked at this point, Davynn's hair clinging to the side of her face. Eventually, the river began to calm, as if slowly relenting to their superiority and they paddled along the last stretch, a strong smell of pine in the crisp air. It really was a good day.

Uvek sat hard on the sandy shore trying to catch his breath. His arm ached wonderfully, but he spun the paddle with proficiency, the bionet responding to his every whim. He leaned back fascinated at the computer that was creating such a wonderful illusion. The wind and crispness, even the smell of the pines. Fascinating.

Qech had secured the boat and now stood drying her hair with a towel. He stood and walked over to her, laying the paddle in the boat.

"I really appreciate this, commander." He said, lapsing back into his role of tactical officer. "Your friendship and support is greatly appreciated. And I think I have found a new therapy technique." He smiled and waited for her to call for the arch and the end of their brief adventure.

Qech smiled as she threw the towel over her shoulder and began tying her damp hair back with an elastic. "I'm glad that you've found something that works for you. Physical therapy is a long, often boring process so it's always nice when you can combine it with something fun. As for me, I'm just getting all of this out of my system while I still can. So, if you ever need a boating partner, I've got a couple months left in me."

She handed him a towel and turned to face where she knew the entrance to be. "Computer, Arch." The familiar archway appeared in what looked like the middle of the beach and she made her way toward it, speaking back over her shoulder as she walked. "See you next shift, Lieutenant."
