Uvek took the knife and looked it over. One of Uvek's passions was hand-to-well, hand combat. He had taken pride in mastering a number of disciplines, including the Tal Shaya, and that included the use of hand-held weapons. But he had never handled the small but solid item in his hand.

"Thank you very much, Mr. Koester, I hardly know what to say." He slid the knife into his boot, straightened his legging and held out his hand. "Most appreciated, Karl. Thank you."

Looking around at the others she thought on what Qech had said.

"I suppose I am keeping my distance from the others... I guess that I haven't healed as much as expected. I shall have to work on that." she said with a slight smile as she looked back at the Commander.

"I know you understand personal loss... I can't imagine the loss you've gone through, mine is far difficult to cope with... depending on the angle you view it from." she paused and stood silent for a moment as if lost in some memory or long pondered thought.

"I'm not quite sure that speaking with Solek at this juncture would be helpful. I haven't had time to process the loss of my mother properly and trying to speak to another about it would be counter productive in my frame of mind." she said and pursed her lips. "Perhaps soon though, if only to keep myself in check... from drifting further away from the others..." she let the sentance run off as if she were leaving it open to be finished, yet didn't know how.

"I want to thank you for the conversation Commander... with a rather male dominant crew, it's nice to speak to someone who can understand where I'm coming from... emotionally at the least. I suppose I still have trouble relating to the male gender." she said the last with a chuckle as if remembering something.

Qech chuckled. "Understandable. We're not as different as each other thinks, though. I've been both, and its complicated, no matter the chromosome. Maybe you need to stop thinking of them as 'men', and start seeing them as your crewmates."

She smiled, and put a hand on the other woman's shoulder. "If you don't think you're ready to talk to Solek, that's your choice. It's always hard to force yourself to talk when these things first happen, I know. I have to visit him later in the day, and he's been trying to get me into his office for weeks now... But if you ever feel you do need to talk, and you're not ready for a counselor, I'm right here."

With his right hand over his left shoulder rubbing it -- out of habit -- Cory Drake stood at the door to the room where the rest of the crew was gathered.

Drake winced: "Damn Shoulder" he said to himself.

Trying to tune out the nagging sting, Drake moved his right hand to the pad next to the door and opened it, revealing the crew laughing, enjoying cake and having a fun time together.

He slowly stepped in, not knowing where to go yet being fairly new on the ship.

As he stepped in the door behind him slid close. Drake looked glanced at his left should and arm.

Good, still working, don't want to freak out too many people just yet, Drake thought to himself.

Doctor Kiv stepped up to Commander Qech and Lieutenant Zeara, nodding to both as she did.

"Lieutenant, Commander. I hope you're both enjoying yourselves at Lieutenant Uvek's expense, I know I am." she laughed a little and lifted her glass towards the ships resident Romulan. Looking back to the pair of women she leaned in and faux whispered her next comment. "To be honest, I'm while I'm glad that the Lieutenant had such a good turn out, I'm equally as glad that Mr. Korax declined to join us. He's been rather solitary during our trip and I'm not sure it would be all that great if the only Klingon and Romulan on board were in the same, confined, area."

As the Doctor talks with Qech and Zeara, Lieutenant Ghan walks by, on his way to give his regards to Lieutenant Uvek. Before he reached his intended destination, Commander Qech caught his eye. The swarthy Tellarite, his mouth hammering away at fried clams, smiles.

"I suppose this party will do. I am greatly enjoying the wide variety of foods... Commander, may I assume you had a part to play in all of this?"

Across the room, Doctor T'Lau stepped up to Lieutenant Uvek, her hands clasped behind her back and her body language neutral as she approached.

"Lieutenant, I offer you congratulations on your well earned promotion. When do you return to active duty?"

Counselor Solek was standing near a table, talking with Ensign zh'Rel when Lieutenant Drake stepped into the lounge. He offered the Andorian pilot a polite smile and excused himself, making his way over to the Science Officer. As he approached the young man, his smile widened -- an unusual and nigh unsettling gesture from a Vulcan -- and he offered a hand... his left hand.

"Lieutenant Drake, I assume. I am Counselor Solek, chief of psychiatric medicine aboard the Hartington. However, I am a fully trained Medical Doctor and do serve in Sickbay as an auxiliary medical officer. I simply wanted to introduce myself to you and offer my assistance in anything you may need."

He's been rather solitary during our trip and I'm not sure it would be all that great if the only Klingon and Romulan on board were in the same, confined, area."

Qech looked past Dr. Kiv and over to the Romulan, who was busy receiving his guests as they came to congratulate him. She smiled. "I have to admit, I've been curious to see how those two would mix. But Lieutenant Uvek has certain qualities that I think a Klingon might be forced to admit are honorable. They may not have a problem with each other at all, once the initial die is cast of course. You can't get rid of an ancient rivalry overnight, and..."

Her sentence was cut short as the horrible smell of fried clams wafted in her direction from a nearby table. She wasn't surprised to see Lt. Ghan feasting on a plate as he walked by. She'd had him in mind when she chose that particular platter for the celebration. She wrinkled her nose at the plate as he stopped to talk to her.

"I suppose this party will do. I am greatly enjoying the wide variety of foods... Commander, may I assume you had a part to play in all of this?"

Qech nodded, turning a little green. "Well, I couldn't help but to think back on a certain patient who would sneak to the replicators every night for these things, despite his recent stomach surgery. If I recall I had to take them offline. And when that didn't work, I had to put you in a containment field. So, yes, lieutenant. The clams were for you. Consider it a nod to your noble sacrifice for what must have been quite a trying recovery period." The sarcasm in her voice would have been clear to anyone, but she knew to a Tellarite, it would be painfully clear. She smiled, in a way that clearly said: I win.

Uvek noted Kiv's toast with a brief nod and a smile. The woman he was waiting for approached him.

"Lieutenant, I offer you congratulations on your well earned promotion. When do you return to active duty?" said Dr. T'Lau.

"Thank you doctor." replied Uvek, turning to face his surgeon. "I have been cleared for light duty all ready. I suppose I will be fully functional shortly after, due in no small part to your special touch." He flexed his hand before the doctor. "I owe you for your professionalism. I suspect I would have suffered unnecessarily with a less knowledgable physician."

He was gushing he knew, but T'Lau was the only vulcanoid surgeon on board who could have dealt so well with the peculiarities of copper-based blood, and frankly she had saved his career. He felt a deep sense of loyalty and honest affection for her. That said, he turned his attention to the room, watching the various lieutenants and commanders intermingle.

"This was a remarkable event, yes?" He asked T'Lau, almost willing her to stay around him. "I see Lt. Drake made it in. Perhaps I should say something." Before he could he watched a large Tellerite meander over, muncing on some fried something.

"Lt. Ghan, good of you to come." He stood still, his hands behind his back, waiting for the Engineer to make the first move.

"Much appreciated Karl. Thank you."

"Not a problem sir. I was thinking you would appreciate a weapon like that." Koester replied.

He smiled and asked: "May I pour you some vodka?" [/i]

"May I pour you some vodka?"

Uvek hefted the bottle and smiled. "You read my mind." He turned to Dr. T'Lau and said "Excuse me, doctor, please. Lt. Ghan." He motioned Karl to follow him to the table where he grabbed two glasses. He then twisted the cap off with his left hand, somewhat ceremonially and poured two shots of the clear liquid.

"Hann'yyo and hei-ya-hai, which is - thank you, a cheer of success." He said while raising his glass. He downed the drink in one quick swallow. The fire that followed was unfamiliar, but not unpleasant. Uvek winced nonetheless. "Ahhh....that certainly hits whatever spot it should." He laughed.

catching the same smell of fried clams as Qech she herself couldn't help but make a face. Clams had never been a favorite of hers... unless it was in a soup, then she didn't mind them. Smiling as the Commander made conversation regarding the Tellarite's inability to control his craving for the food, she had to give a slight nod to the woman's subtle win.

"I don't understand what you find appetizing about that... the smell alone makes one want to... be sick."

Lieutenant Drake took the Vulcan's hand tightly and nodded.

"Please to meet you Counselor Solek," Lieutenant Drake looks around the room. "She looks like a fine crew to go along with the fine vessel. I'm looking forward to serving with you folks."

Drake wondered if the Counselor had read any of his file yet or knew of his holographic left arm that still caused him aches every now and then, but often brought back memories of that battle when he lost his arm several years ago.

"Noticed you were having an Andorian drink, Counselor, any good?" Drake asked. "Never have had one before. Usually I'm just a whiskey type of guy."
