ACTION

The Hartington floated in the vastness of space, holding its position several thousand kilometers away from the edge of the Julant Expanse. Four weeks had passed since the crew's experience in the distant past, long enough for Lieutenant Uvek to become accustomed to his new hand and for Commander Qech to start visibly showing signs of her pregnancy.

Over the past few weeks, the crew had been involved in several minor incidents before settling on a course for the Expanse. Amongst these was the rescue of a Myosian vessel stranded after an ion storm and the First Contact with the Pel, an avian race of distantly related to the Nekrali. Thanks to information retrieved from both the Myosians and the Pel, the crew of the Hartington were given charts of the Expanse, piquing the interest of the stellar sciences department, as well as the Captain, who's love of alien civilizations was well known among the crew.

Before entering the expanse itself, however, the Captain called one last meeting of his crew... just to be safe.

Location: Deck 1 Conference Room, USS Hartington
Stardate: 54132.5 (February 18, 2377)

Captain Brennon sat at the head of the conference room table, nodding his head as Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Ghan continued his long -- 23 minutes at this point -- explanation on how exactly the Warp Drive had been modified for sustained warp flight while within the nebula. As his eyes darted around the room momentarily, he could tell that he was not the only one of the Hartington's Senior Officers that found the Tellarite's presentation just a little dry.

"...And with that in place, I believe that we can filter out the problems inherent in FTL travel through an atmosphere, which as you all well know is very nearly the same as travel through a nebula, even keeping in mind that this particular nebula is much less dense than your average atmosphere or nebula. That brings me to..."

The Captain let out a sigh as he settled back, rubbing his temples ever so slightly, trying to massage away the headache that was beginning to form. Lieutenant Ghan went on at length for another 17 minutes, making his presentation the longest of the staff present. Not to say that it was unnecessary, just long winded. The Captain was grateful when Lieutenant Solana from the Science Department spoke up, the Vulcan filling in for the ship's senior science officer, Lieutenant Drake while he finished collecting the last of the sensor data from the Hartington's Astrometrics Lab.

"Captain, Lieutenant Drake reports that he will be joining us momentarily to present the final astrometric report before entering the Expanse."

Brennon nodded and tapped a key on his PADD, bringing up a map of the area on the room's main viewer. A small Starfleet emblem signified the position of the Hartington, on the outer edge of the nebula. Other known points inside were listed as well. The Captain looked up to the rest of his staff.

"A stellar nursery 25 light years away, no fewer than seven pre-warp worlds at various stages of development, two active archeological digs being undertaken by our Myosian allies, rumors of a wormhole bouncing around the area, a medical symposium being held by the Pel on Argous III... my friends we have our work cut out for us. The reason I've called us all here today is to decide our course of action. I want to gauge the interest of the crew, each department, each of you and make a decision based on that. We'll hold off on any major decision making until Lieutenant Drake is able to present a final report to us, but this area is teaming with activity... I can't help but just itch looking at it. Let's hear some suggestions."

The Captain then sat back and waited for the first of his senior staff to offer up an idea.

"Captain, the data on this possible wormhole is fascinating. If we could find another wormhole in the Gamma Quadrant and explore it, it might be able to reduce some of the strategic stress on the Bajor system." Calodan examined the data before him and continued, "Pending the arrival of Lt Drake's data, I propose we task a runabout to searching out this wormhole."

Uvek leaned into the table, listening as Calodan suggested the runabout. At the same time his mind drifted back to the unpleasant experience with the Tal'harton and he suppressed a shudder.

"Captain, with due respect to the lieutenant, on this heading we have skirted the edge of known Tal'harton space, but there is no indication of how far their reach extends. I cannot concur with sending a runabout out until we know more of the tactical issues of this region. A safer approach is to release warp-capable probes to develop information on the pre-warp civilizations in the nebula, while using the Hartington's more sophisticated scanners to locate any sign of the wormhole. At that point it may be prudent to send unmanned probes into the anomaly first in order to determine its actual exit point."

Koester had asked permission to attend the meeting and stood listening to Uvek's suggestions.

"Sir. I also suggest we issue weapons to all authorized personnel since we're not certain what the security and tactical threats are in this sector. I would also like to execute surprise boarding drills to keep my security teams and other personnel ready to deal with intruders." Koester began.

Xavier Croft

Croft listened as the meeting progressed, but kept quiet. Although he visibly perked up at the mention of the runabout mission, he didn't feel like the discussion would benefit much from his two cents. Whichever way they went, sooner or later it would get interesting, that was a given.

Smith had gotten used to going wherever Koester went. It seemed like lately, they went together like Laurel and Hardy. Today, however, Smith was involved in the security training procedures.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, if I may be so bold: I've taken the liberty of creating a holodeck program to PO1 Koester's specifications. Before we conduct shipwide intruder drills, we can conduct drills in Holodeck 12. That way nobody is totally unprepared, and our teams can be at the very apogee of rediness."

taking a deep breath as Ghan continued his speech on the Warp Drive she leaned back and tried to stretch her back and shoulders with as little visable movement as she could manage. There's wasn't much that her input could benefit and she began to let her mind wander as the discussion moved into areas that she had little knowledge of.

I really must take time to speak with Solek... and perhaps offer an appology to Croft for my actions on our hike... she thought to herself and tried to focus in on the discussion at hand.

Qech looked to the Captain, a slight smile on her face. "I'm sure you know where I might stand on this, but as long as we're asking for opinions here I'm very interested in the medical symposium. Studying another cultures medical practices could have excellent benefits. I'm sure our medical staff would love the opportunity."

She chuckled slightly, obviously at some stray thought, then added: "And for purely selfish reasons I wouldn't mind going to one of the digs; if only to rub it in my brother's face."

Uvek smiled at the ideas flowing around the table. He looked to Mr. Koester and then to Commander Qech before addressing his commanding officer.

"Captain, as tactical officer, I agree on certain levels with all of these suggestions. With open invitations to the medical sypmosium, we could gain valuable intelligence on the Gamma quadrant races in this region; particularly the Pel, with whom we have little interaction thus far. Furthermore, the 'digs' could offer us indepth scientific analysis of the nebula without sending a runabout into unknown territory without the ship's protection." He paused a moment, looking at Mr. Smith.

"As far as security goes, the drills should go on, albeit quietly, without the need to arm everyone onboard. Mr. Smith's holographic program could be just the ticket."

Lieutenant Cory Drake walked through the corridor on his way to the conference room while also looking mysteriously at his PADD.

"It can't be, there's no way this can be. If so, how?" Drake said to himself. "The captain isn't going to believe one word of this."

If Drake hadn't heard it himself, he wouldn't believe it. There he was sitting in Astrometrics looking over information on the Expanse the Hartington was about to enter. Not really expecting to find anything too interesting, but all of a sudden the sensors woke up -- along with Drake.

"How am I going to explain this one?" Drake questioned.

Drake looked up just in time to move out of the way of another crewman walking through the corridor. With the PADD in his hand Drake reached the short trek to the conference room from Astrometrics. Drake pulled down on his shirt before entering the conference room.

As the door slid open, Drake had a confused look on his face, still thinking about what he had just found while getting ready to submit his astrometic report before heading into the Expanse.

Drake nodded at his fellow officers and then turned to the captain. Still standing, Drake spoke up.

"Sorry I'm late, Sir. I have something here that I wanted to deliever by hand, you won't believe it, Sir. I barely do."

The Captain listened to each of his senior staff present their ideas and concerns. Each crewmen that spoke up had a different take on what to do, a different plan of action and Brennon was interested in hearing them all out.

"Captain, the data on this possible wormhole is fascinating. If we could find another wormhole in the Gamma Quadrant and explore it, it might be able to reduce some of the strategic stress on the Bajor system. Pending the arrival of Lt Drake's data, I propose we task a runabout to searching out this wormhole."

"Captain, with due respect to the lieutenant, on this heading we have skirted the edge of known Tal'harton space, but there is no indication of how far their reach extends. I cannot concur with sending a runabout out until we know more of the tactical issues of this region. "Sir. I also suggest we issue weapons to all authorized personnel since we're not certain what the security and tactical threats are in this sector. I would also like to execute surprise boarding drills to keep my security teams and other personnel ready to deal with intruders."

Captain Brennon nodded his head, seeing both points of view. It was most certainly a tough choice, however, one did not become a Captain in Starfleet by shirking away at the tough ones.

"Gentlemen, searching for this wormhole may in fact be more difficult than we know. Wormholes are notoriously difficult to track. I wouldn't want to place any less than the Hartington's full capability on locating it. And even if we do discovered where it's likely to pop up there is no indication of it having any bearing on the Federation other than exploration. That said, I don't think these are reasons not to look for it, in fact I believe these reason would give us more incentive to find it." he paused for a moment, nodding towards his Second Officer approvingly. As he continued speaking, his eyes moved towards his Tactical Officer. "I think that the threat of the Tal'Harton is very real and one we must prepare for. Because of this threat, I'm loathed to allow any auxiliary craft away from the Hartington for extended missions. Until further notice, and unless I give my specific authorization, the Hartington's shuttle complement is grounded." He nodded again, this time to Lieutenant Uvek, before sitting back again. The gesture was clear, the Captain had yielded the floor.

"I'm sure you know where I might stand on this, but as long as we're asking for opinions here I'm very interested in the medical symposium. Studying another cultures medical practices could have excellent benefits. I'm sure our medical staff would love the opportunity... And for purely selfish reasons I wouldn't mind going to one of the digs; if only to rub it in my brother's face."

Brennon chuckled, nodding as he made a note of Qech's comment on his PADD. His head turned upwards again as Lieutenant Uvek began to speak again.

"Captain, as tactical officer, I agree on certain levels with all of these suggestions. With open invitations to the medical symposium, we could gain valuable intelligence on the Gamma quadrant races in this region; particularly the Pel, with whom we have little interaction thus far. Furthermore, the 'digs' could offer us in-depth scientific analysis of the nebula without sending a runabout into unknown territory without the ship's protection. As far as security goes, the drills should go on, albeit quietly, without the need to arm everyone on-board. Mr. Smith's holographic program could be just the ticket."

Brennon found himself nodding in agreement with his Romulan Tactical Officer once again. With a smile creeping across his face, he spoke again.

"I can't help but agree with your judgment, Mr. Uvek, and dare I say it: Logic."

Across the table, Lieutenant Solana raised a brow almost defiantly, but wisely chose not to speak up at the time.

Captain Brennon continued, "Continue battle drills and increase security. Commander Qech, I'd like us on a shipwide Yellow Alert until we're certain we're far enough away from the Tal'Harton's back yard and closer to our friend's front yard."

As the Captain was about to continue, the doors to the conference room whooshed open and Lieutenant Drake stepped through the portal. The Science Officer's confusion was written on his face for all to see with Captain Brennon taking special note of it.

"Sorry I'm late, Sir. I have something here that I wanted to deliver by hand, you won't believe it, Sir. I barely do."

Captain Brennon sat up and motioned for the man to present his report.

"By all means, Mr. Drake. Let's hear it."

Uvek tapped out commands on his PADD as Drake came to the table. He was keenly interested in the science officer's take on this mission. In a moment he leaned back and motioned for Koester to come and take it.

The Petty Officer stepped up and grabbed the unit, moving back to his place in the room. It read:

AS ALWAYS, GOOD TACTICS. SELECT CERTAIN SECURITY STAFF TO CARRY SIDEARMS, BUT TRY TO KEEP THEM INOCUOUS, IF POSSIBLE. YOU KNOW WHERE TO POSITION THEM. ARRANGE A TRAINING SCHEDULE WITH MR. SMITH FOR OPTIMUM USE OF THE HOLOGRAPHIC PROGRAM. I'D LIKE TO SEE YOU ON THE BRIDGE COORDINATING THINGS DURING BETA SHIFT, TO GIVE YOU MORE FRONTLINE TIME. ONE LAST ITEM: IT WOULD BE GOOD TO SELECT A SMALL SQUAD FOR INTENSE SNIPER TRAINING WITH THE TR-116. I CAN'T THINK OF ANYONE MORE QUALIFIED AND, WITHOUT THE MARINE CONTINGENT, IT FALLS ON YOU TO BRING SOME OF OUR SECURITY STAFF TO MARINE STANDARD.GOOD WORK -

Holodeck 12
PO3 T. Smith

Smith was sitting cross leged on the floor trying to get the boarding simulator running, and stupidly without the assistance of Lt. Ghan.

A hum of energy followed by the simulation was just the encouragement Smith needed.

"Petty Officer Smith to Petty Officer Koester. Can you meet me in Holodeck 12 Karl?"

"This is Koester. I'm on my way. What exactly do you need, Smith." Koester replied: "Speaking of my weapon of choice I would like to hold a period of instruction for selected security personnel for the use of the TR-116 sniper rifle. I've got you as one of my candidates."

Koester went to grab a raktajino from a nearby replicator before heading to the holodeck with his TR-116 slung over one shoulder.

"By your leave sir." Koester said to Uvek: "I'm on my way to assist Smith with his holodeck program."
