"No, no, Jim... No one is separating you from Calodan. I would never, ever allow anything like that."

Calodan laid back on the bunk and sighed. He coughed, his mouth still very dry, before choking out more words. "Thank you Commander. Could I get some *cough* water? I feel like I have a desert in my throat."

Lt. Cory Drake
USS Hartington
Bridge

"Send me everything you have on the database about the experimental symbiont removal program on Trill."

Drake moved his attention from the sector scans and Solana to retreiving the information for Command Qech. It didn't take the long for the computer to compile the information that the commander was looking for.

But why was she looking for it, Drake thought to him. I hope we get a sample of that slime junk that we can study more in-depth in science, Drake thought to himself.

The Lieutenant tapped his comm badge, "Commander, information retreived, I'm transfering it to your location now." Drake tapped a sequence of keys on the console.

"Thank you Commander. Could I get some *cough* water? I feel like I have a desert in my throat."

Davynn smiled and nodded before heading over to the desk where she'd found a pitcher of water earlier. As she poured him a glass, she heard Lieutenant Drake's response come through the comm.

"Commander, information retrieved, I'm transferring it to your location now."

She surveyed the information as it came up on her screen very quickly before thanking him and returned to Calodan with his water. She understood how he felt. She was dying of thirst when she first woke up as well. Now she was trying to fight off the effects of the virus on an empty stomach, but she didn't want to stop and eat.

Too much to do she thought. I really should. I need to... But there's so much at stake and I need every second I can get.

She handed the water to him, suppressing the coughing fit that was creeping up her throat. At the very least she tried to appear stronger than she felt, maybe give him some hope.

"It's cold" she said. "Don't drink too fast."

Doctor Ortega watched the two friends with a mixture of compassion and concern written across his face. He had seen this far too many times to count, friends and loved ones torn apart due to this vicious parasite.

Just when I thought we had conquered it... he thought to himself. Tearing his eyes away, he looked over to the data sent by Lieutenant Drake from the Hartington, reading over the first few lines with interest.

"Doctor, perhaps you should get something to eat while we sift to the data your people sent. You'll be better able to fight off the infection on a full stomach. I'll send for something for your friends as well."

***

Location: Captain's Ready Room, USS Hartington

Captain Brennon sat in his chair behind the desk, looking up at his Tactical Officer. A neutral expression was plastered to the Human's face, though that expression said much more than any amount of words would.

"I need you to be aware of something, Lieutenant. I've recently received Eyes-Only orders from Admiral Croft and, suffice it to say the recent events aboard ship have brought us to an cross in the road. Quietly, I need you to work with Lieutenants Ghan, Drake and Solana on three things: 1) enhancing the warp drive to the following specifications,"

he extended a PADD towards Uvek,

"2) to coordinate the continued search of nearby sector space with Stellar Sciences. The search parameters are logged on that PADD. Elevated neutrino and tachyon emissions, and 3) coordinate with M'Rowl on revising the duty roster in the event Commander Qech and Lieutenant Calodan and Croft do not survive their ordeal. I'll be in conference with Starfleet Command for the next several hours. If you need me, I'm available, but make it known that I shouldn't be disturbed."

The Captain took in a deep breath and looked away from Uvek, towards his monitor. Slowly, he exhaled and continued speaking.

"If they die, our mission will be placed on an indefinate hold. I'll be ordering an immediate return to the Alpha Quadrant... you may end up getting that shot at Drayal after all, Lieutenant.

Uvek stood motionless for a moment. It hadn't occurred to him that someone might die from this. Prefect Hackett seemed confident the infection could be dealt with. Drayal aside, the Romulan had no desire to return to the Alpha Quadrant. For all intents and purposes he was a wanted man facing a death sentence, and this was the most adventurous thing he had ever done without killing someone.

He glanced to the PADD then back to his captain. "Sir, I will do my best. The elevated neutrino readings may indicate a wormhole, yes? I find that exciting in itself, yet somehow.." he lowered the device and looked squarely at Brennon. "Somehow that pales in comparison to this crisis with our friends." It was the closest he came to expressing his personal feelings to the commanding officer. "I would like to volunteer any method of support in my power and I will see to it the specifications are met to the letter."

He moved to the door, then paused and turned back to David. "Sir, forgive the intrusion, but I hope things go well on the planet. I have become quite fond of the away team members." He moved to say more, but didn't.

LOCATION: BRIDGE

Uvek moved slowly across the bridge, the weight of the captain's words were ringing in his mind and weighing his steps. As Chief of security it was natural that the captain would confide information in him, but Brennon had not given him the whole picture. If members of the away team died, he would send the ship back to the Alpha Quadrant!? Something wasn't in the spoken orders, nor found on the PADD. The upgrades to the warp engines indicated they were going to be fitted to cover distance at speed. They would also give the Hartington advanced power reserves. But why now?

He moved to the control panel at his tactical station. Tapping in a command, he set an appointment with Ghan. He didn't relish that meeting. It wasn't that Ghan was a bad officer. But Ghan was a tellerite. Uvek hated tellerites. To his mind they smelled, their breath was normally bad, and they shed. Uvek had no use for sentient beings that shed. Still, Ghan did a superb job as an engineer and the Romulan respected it. Besides, the captain gave him an order.

Next he moved to Lt. Drake. He was beginning to get a sense of Drake. The holo-arm aside, the lieutenant was a well educated and dedicated officer. Uvek thought he could like Drake, the way he had begun to like McTavish before....well, anyway, he could like Drake. Standing by him, he said,

"Mr. Drake, a moment please." The two officers moved across the bridge until they stood alone. "I wonder if you and Lt. Solana will help me with something?" He handed Drake the now-redacted PADD. "These are the coordinates of seemingly increased neutrino and tachyon emmissions. While it may seem that there is nothing in that sector, I would be obliged if you would look into this with enhanced sector scans. And Mr. Drake, please do so with discretion. I would appreciate it if you would report back to me any findings and with equal discretion."

After receiving Drake's reply, he moved to Mr. Smith. "Mr. Smith, in addition to the tactical station, I am charging you with security at the captain's ready room. No one is to disturb the captain."

Lt. Drake took the PADD from the Romulan's hands and looked at it curiously increased neutrino and tachyon emmissions, wow, Drake thought to himself. He continued to thumb through the PADD as Uvek continued to speak to Petty Officer Smith.

Something's missing here, what isn't Mr. Uvek telling us? Drake thought about it for an instant. He jumped back to his duties at hand and nodded at Uvek. "We'll get right on it, Sir."

Drake pivoted and, with big long footsteps, made his way back to the science station where Solana was quietly working. He handed the PADD to the Vulcan science officer. "Keep this between us and lets get to work, Lieutenant."

Drake sat down at the science station as he and Solana began to increase their sensor readings of the sector the coordinates pointed to them. At first glance it was just another wide-open area of space with nothing in it. Gee, Solana's going to love doing this scan, Drake thought, with a slight smirk on his face.

"Aye aye sir. I'll post a guard at the door to keep the area clear." Smith thought to himself I wonder what the skipper has going on that needs him to be kept away...

"Doctor, perhaps you should get something to eat while we sift to the data your people sent. You'll be better able to fight off the infection on a full stomach. I'll send for something for your friends as well."

Davynn nodded slowly, knowing he was right. She could at least browse the computer files and eat at the same time, if she finished quickly. She smiled gratefully.

"Thank you. Anything that's not seafood is fine for me, thanks. Allergies."

Turning back to her friends, she poured a second glass of water and approached Croft.

"Croft? You need something to drink? They're bringing down some food too if you're hungry."

Davynn couldn't help but noticed how quickly she fell back into her old role as a medic, and the thought made her smile to herself. Like riding a bike.

Uvek moved through the ship, heading to Engineering. In his hand was a data chip containing the confidential schematic changes ordered by Captain Brennon, while in his mind were the words spoken to him in the ready room. As he passed around a corner he nearly bumped headlong into Yeoman M'Rowl. He dropped the chip as he reached out to steady her, and smiled when she retrieved the dropped item and handed it back to him with a shy and apologetic smile.

"Yeoman, you are just the person I was looking for." lied Uvek. Still, it was a small lie, and more like a half-truth, as the Caitan would have been next on his list of appointments. He gently guided her to a corner, away from the traffic in the hallway and spoke quietly.

"I would appreciate it if you would meet me in the security office in thirty minutes. I cannot discuss why here, but you will understand then. Thirty minutes then?" he asked. Getting the reply he expected, he moved back into the corridor, raising the data chip in thanks and moving through the engineering department's doors.

ENGINEERING
**********

Uvek moved through engineering following instructions given to him by a crewman as to Ghan's whereabouts. Walking up to the main engineer's console he watched Ghan extract himself from the Water Reclamation chamber, the one place on a starship where a tellerite could get wet and then smell that way.He fought a grimace as the dripping pork-bellied engineer came closer and grunted a greeting. Slipping the data chip into the console face, UVek turned and spoke in a quiet monotone to the lieutenant.

"This is a priority from the captain, Mr. Ghan." he began, pulling back slightly when Ghan leaned in to see better what was displayed. As the schematics rolled thru, Uvek continued. "You will need to assemble a select team and begin modifications to the warp drive in order to meet these specifications. This project is confidential, and only your team should be made aware of it. Also, should you require assistance with modifications to the Cloaking device, I am proficient in that area and will assist you myself. When these modifications are ready, you will need to notify me through secure channels. Do you have any questions?"

He braced himself for the inevitable verbal and olfactory assault.

Croft squinted against the bright light, only making out the outline of Qech. "Just some water, thanks." His tongue felt swollen, and the water tasted fantastic. He shuddered slightly at the cold, then sighed.
"So I guess we aren't quite dead yet, eh?"

"So I guess we aren't quite dead yet, eh?"

Qech smiled, glad to see he had enough spirit left to be making jokes. "Dr. Kiv and I are working to make sure that doesn't happen. I'm going to leave this here" she said, placing the water on a small stand within arms reach of both Calodan and Croft. She coughed, reaching to steady herself on the foot of the cot. It was a few more minutes before she could speak again, and even then her voice sounded raspy.

"I've got some research to do. But if either of you need anything, I'm just over there. For now, just try and rest."

She returned to the lab area where she found a plate in front of the computer console. She ate what she could as she read up on the experimental Trill procedure, but found she couldn't stomach very much, despite how hungry she was.

Hours went by as Qech ran back and forth between research and active study of the scans they'd taken. The research had unlocked a billion different possibilities, but all of them had to be tested in simulation before she could even consider them. She was tired and worn, and the virus was beating her down. For awhile she felt like she might give in to it, until what felt like the millionth simulation...

"Dr. Ortega..." she said, a tone of obvious hope in her voice. "I think I might have found something."

When the Doctor approached, Qech ran the simulation again, pausing each sequence for him to look at. "I've run a few... and when I say a few I mean more like a thousand, different tests using the information I received from Lieutenant Drake a few hours ago." Her fingers danced across the screen, and she brought up what looked like a chemical sequence.

"In order to be successful the symbiont separation requires that the patient be injected with a neuro-chemical compound that safely severs the bond between host and symbiont. I applied this idea to your parasites, as they seem to use a similar, telepathic means to bond to their hosts."

She brought up a new screen, one that was clearly taken from a brain scan of either herself or Calodan. "I had to re-write the sequence to apply to the parasites, as the bond isn't completely identical. But using the samples you provided I think I've finally come up with a chemical compound that will have the same effect as the unjoining process, but which only targets the parasites."

The simulation continued to play out on-screen. "It should have no affect on the symbiont in a joined Trill. As for betazoids..." she changed the sequence to that using scans of Croft. "The sequence is similar, it just needs to target a separate area of the brain, with a few changes on a chemical level. In fact, this injection was very easily modified. I was surprised, once I had a base sequence down, how easily it adapted. Even humans..."

The screen changed again, showing a provided scan of a previously infected human. "...who have no enhanced telepathic ability, can still benefit with a few changes on a chemical level. The parasites can be safely removed, with no harm to them or to the host."

Her eyes were heavy and bloodshot, and she looked as if she were on her last leg, but it didn't stop her from smiling when she looked back to her fellow medic. "How quickly could your people make this?"

Croft must have fallen asleep, because he was standing at the top of the steps of the main building at Starfleet Academy. Everything had a fuzzy feel to it, his vision was slightly blurred. He looked down at his cadet uniform, finding himself remembering a simpler time, a happier time. A young woman was running up the stairs, a smile on her face. The love of his life, the drive of his existence, the ghost that haunted his dreams. Ally ran up and took his hand, a warm smile on her face.
"You can let go now, Xavier. Let go of your anger. It's not your fault, not your father's either. I knew what I signed on for, we all know the risks. I love you, I always will. Don't let my memory haunt you any more, remember the good..
The dream began to fade, and as Croft drifted into a deeper, more restful sleep, a single tear slid down his cheek.

"Do you have any questions?"

To Uvek's shock and surprise, Lieutenant Ghan nodded his head, apparently engrossed in the data he had been given. In fact, the only reply the Romulan received at all was a grunt of combined acknowledgment and dismissal. Acknowledgment in that he nodded slightly as he read, dismissal in the way he did not once look back towards Uvek as he read... maybe the Tellarite had something against Romulans...

***

Location: Security Office, USS Hartington

As Lieutenant Uvek stepped into the office for his meeting with Yeomen M'Rowl, the Romulan may or may not have been surprised to see the Caitan woman waiting for him.

"What can I help you with, Lieutenant?"

***

Location: Inside a secured medical ward, Edenite Medical Facility

Doctor Ortega listened to Qech's report, looking over her data as he did so. Although he had been briefed on the joined nature of the Trill species in the hours before his patient's arrival, Paolo still had a difficult time wrapping his mind around the concept -- genetically enhanced or not. Even so, he was a physician, one of the best of his generation. With a nod he stood back up to his full, impressive height.

"I think that this is a very sound plan, Doctor. I will alert the science ministry at once and, provided they approve your formula we'll begin production. I would say that we could have enough for your people within an hour of approval."

He smiled, placing a hand on her shoulder. His eyes shown brightly with thanks as he spoke.

"I will return return very soon. For now, you should give your friends the good news."

At that, the Doctor vanished.
