"I will return return very soon. For now, you should give your friends the good news."

Qech closed her eyes for a moment, crossing her fingers and hoping that the formula passed scrutiny. She was so tired, and could only hope that no mistakes were made because of her lack of clarity. As per the Doctor's suggestion, she slowly made her way over to the cots where her friends slept. Finding she just couldn't stand anymore, the exhausted Trill pulled up a chair at the foot of the cots and sat down.

They both seemed to be fast asleep, but she decided she should at least try and deliver some hopeful news.

"Jim? Xavier? Can you hear me?"

Croft jerked at the sound of his voice, a small gasp escaping his lips. He squinted at Qech, shifting slightly on the cot he was lying on.
"Sorry, Commander, must have dosed off, you were saying?"

Calodan opened his eyes and blinked a few times against the light. The feeling of emptiness in his head made him feel very alone.

"Yes Commander, I'm still here."

Qech smiled at the sounds of their voices, glad to know they were still capable of waking up. "I have what might be some uplifting news, if everything goes well. The parasites may be able to be removed safely. This may all be over with in an hour or so... hopefully. But we need to hope for the best."

She rested her head against the wall, which felt cool against her feverish skin and tried to resist the urge to close her eyes. It was the first time since before they went on the away mission to the derelict that she'd even had a moment to rest, aside from bouts of nightmare-ridden unconsciousness. She was losing the battle with her exhaustion, and her voice sounded weak and far away when she spoke again.

"Just hope for the best..."

Uvek sat in the security office. M'Rowl was across from him, sitting in a chair waiting for him to speak. For some reason, the Romulan was being particularly reticent. He looked at the PADD in his hand for the tenth time. He sighed and looked up at the Yeoman.

"I do not like this duty." He said simply, passing the notes to the captain's right arm. "I had to ask for your input, M'Rowl, because you have more familiarity with the crew than I." At her confused expression, he tried to clear it up.

"The captain has asked me to consider a crew realignment in the event one or more of the away team fails to return." It was as close as he could bring himself to say "dies".

"I have no experience in this work and it is not something I am comfortable with. While I expect a good outcome, one must be prepared. I have established a rudimentary list of qualified officers to replace the members of the away team, but I require your input. Also, you know the captain better than anyone else onboard, with the exception of Commander Qech, perhaps. What is your overall impression of his state of mind? Is there something I can do for him beyond this paperwork?"

Lt. Cory Drake
USS Hartington
Science station

Lt. Drake sat quietly working at his science station, putting together information coming in from sensor readings from the sector that they were ordered to continued scanning.

Drake shook his head slight and pointed at the numbers coming in. "Look at these numbers, Lieutenant Solana, I don't think I've seen neutrino and tachyon emissions that high since we've been in the Gamma Quadrant." Drake moved his hand so Solana could take a better look.

Even though Vulcans drove the human crazy at times, he knew Solana was one hell of a science officer and would someday be a great science chief somehwere. "Lets send out a probe and see what happens when it gets in that sector, we could get more indepth readings that way."

Drake began to press on the console as he sent orders down the pipeline to get a probe enroute to the sector of space with the increased neutrino and tachyon emissions. The more Drake thought about it, the more he was convinced that they had just found another wormhole. "If it's a wormhole, I wonder where she leads to?" Drake asked Solana half seriously.

M'Rowl took the PADD and scanned over the names of each Officer. It was a good list, she had to give the man credit for that. Despite his professed lack of administrative experience, Uvek would one day make a decent command division Officer -- with some polishing of course.

"These are all good choices, I'd suggest considering Lieutenant zh'Rel as a replacement Security Chief however. Ensign Phell may be due for a promotion, but zh'Rel has seniority. As for your other question..."

She sat the PADD down on the desk and looked across, directly into Uvek's eyes.

"The Captain is a very private person. Whatever he is going through right now, he'll need to come to grips with it himself."

She paused, almost unsure if she should continue.

"Lieutenant, you're aware he's a widower, yes?"

Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington

Reading over the recently acquired data, Lieutenant Solana allowed herself a moment of emotional excitement. The prospect of discovering something so monumentally important aroused her scientific sensibilities. Vulcans may be reserved, even cold in the eyes of other races, but something of this scale needed to be acknowledged.

"The probe has been launched. It will arrive at its destination in four hours."

She paused, thinking over the situation before them. After a moment and an apprehensive intake of breath she spoke again, for the first time in a non-professional manner.

"It is fascinating."

Well, as non-professional of a manner as she could muster. She was Vulcan after all.

Location: Inside a secured medical ward, Edenite Medical Facility

Several hours passed with no sign of Doctor Ortega or any other Edenite other than the materialization of a meal for the three patients. After three hours, Qech and Calodan began to speak to their hosts once more and Croft could feel the dread in his companions. An hour later, Calodan and Croft were once again taken by the fever, leaving Qech alone in the sterile whiteness of the medical ward. Two hours after that, the fever took her and she knew nothing...

OOC: What follows is going to be the start of the wrap up for this story. If you want to continue, please feel free to do so, just timestamp your post with a before or after qualifier.

Location: Sickbay, USS Hartington

Jim's eyes were the first to open and for the first time in days he was alone in his own mind -- at least as alone as a Joined Trill would ever be. Standing over him was Nurse D'hala, holding a hypo in one hand and a tricorder in the other. Best of all, she was smiling.

***

Even before Xavier Croft's eyes fluttered to life, he could sense the apprehension of everyone around him. Something was wrong! Opening them, he quickly attempted to rise from biobed, but was firmly -- yet gently -- held into place by the strong hand of Doctor T'Lau. The Vulcan physician raised a brow as she scanned the pilot with her tricorder.

"Fascinating."

Next to him, Croft could see Jim laying in a nearby biobed. He was weak, but he was himself and he was very clearly awake. One bed further down, all did not seem to be as well... the source of the room's apprehension.

***

ACTION

Doctors Kiv and Ortega, along with the Hartington's EMH worked furiously over Lieutenant Commander Qech. The First Officer had finally succumbed to the ravages of the parasites, her Trill biology giving way to the merciless onslaught the infection had to bear. Her core temperature had gone up by nearly 10 degrees, nearly lethal for Davynn, Qech and her unborn child. In the end, she was placed in a stasis field for her own safety.

The two other infected officers were watched for another 24 hours before being given clean bills of health, albeit with light duty as a term of their release. In their time of observation, Qech made little progress towards a recovery, despite Kiv and Ortega working around the clock.

****BEFORE MEDICAL RELEASE, IN SECURITY OFFICE - HARTINGTON***

"Lieutenant, you're aware he's a widower, yes?"

Uvek replied, "I am aware of that fact, yes." He picked up the PADD, tapping out commands to move Zh'rel to the top of the list, grateful that he did not have to make these decisions alone, or often.

"As Chief Security officer I read the bios of all senior officers, and those in key positions on the ship. I understand that he and Commander Qech, or rather the Qech symbiot was part of that relationship. I do not fully understand Trill physiology or psychology for that matter. However, I can understand how this must be affecting him." He paused a moment, reflecting. "I do not like the idea of Commander Qech fighting for her life. Her pregnancy has been jeopardized so many times on this mission. I cannot understand her persistence in duty, when her life and the life of her unborn child hang so precariously in the balance. On Romulus, pregnant women were released from duty and often chose to remain home." He smiled at the thought of Qech sitting in a living room, mothering.

"I suppose I cannot see the Commander doing that. As for the rest of the away team, Lt. Calodan is a fine officer and one I am not ashamed to call friend. I hardly know him or Croft, but the ship would not be the same without them."

He picks up the PADD, escorting M'Rowl to the door. "Thank you for your candor, Yeoman. I will post these in standby, and hope to not need them."

***After medical release***

Calodan had been officially discharged from Sickbay 5 hours before. In that time he had grabbed a sonic shower, fresh uniform, and returned to sickbay. Dr. Kiv had tried to get him to leave but he had made it clear to her he had no plans to.

Davynn Qech had put herself on the line to try and help him and even though he was an engineer and not a doctor, he was going to do the same for her. He stayed out of the way, but was always within range of her so that if...when he corrected himself...she woke up he could be there to reassure her as she had done.

Memories of the infection were hazy, but still there. As a Trill he was used to memories feeling slightly disconnected so he was able to sort through the information he did have. A nasty bruise on Davynn's neck and a quick check of security footage made him feel even more guilty for his actions. He was going to stay here until she woke up.

Lt. Drake
USS Hartington
Science station

Cory Drake looked up slight at Solana hovering over him and chuckled slightly. "A little emotion, Lieutenant? It's nice to see." Drake continued to chuckle slightly and then went back to work. "Let me know when the information starts coming in from the probe. I'm going to continue running the scans through the ship. Maybe we'll pick up a little more info before the probe arrives."

Drake refocused his attention on the monitor in front of him as he played with the console keys, punching in numerous sequences, trying different levels of scans via the Hartington. "This old ship doesn't have a whole lot for science instruments," Drake whispered to himself.

Xavier Croft
Crew's Lounge
After medical release

Croft sat at a window, looking out over the expanse of stars and the planet turning below. He had a ginger ale in front of him. He had tried to visit Qech in sickbay, but with Jim there he felt like he was imposing on a family event and had left. The irony of the situation had not escaped him, while finding a new sense of peace within himself, partially thanks to Qech witnessing his deepest fear, he was facing the loss of another friend. This time, he was prepared, but it didn't make it any easier. The ship was awash in apprehension, Croft could sense it, with one exception. He closed off his mind, letting the beauty of the scene distract him from the moment.

OOC: this is really the end of the story this time. I'll leave the thread open for a day or two so that conversations may wrap up but the main story will be all set and done. Because the post takes place in a disjointed sort of way, time wise, remember to time stamp your posts. Also, if I step on your character's toes in this post I apologize, I'm just trying to get this out and the story done with.

ACTION

The first thing that Qech saw as she awoke the first time were the statuesque features of Doctor Paolo Ortega. Her senses were greatly impaired with the man's face blurred and his voice fuzzy, however Qech could make out something that sounded positive.

"...lieve she... espon... ing t... eatments... his is a... ine."

After blinking a few times, her eyes shut once move and the darkness took her again.

***

An unknowable amount of time passed before Qech's eyes opened again, this time to the features of Jim Calodan hovering over her. When he saw her eyes open he motioned to someone Qech couldn't see. As the form approached, she could barely make out the form of David Brennon. Both men smiled as they looked down at their friend as her eyes shut once more and she drifted back to sleep.

***

Location: Conference Room, USS Hartington

Captain Brennon stepped into the conference room with Lieutenant Calodan at his side. Their personal conversation died down as they entered, the Captain looking towards his Officers.

"Let's hear it."

Lieutenant Solana, who had been consulting a PADD, looked up to Lieutenant Drake. After her superior gave her a nod she spoke up.

"Lieutenant Drake and I have been conducting scans of the surrounding sectors of space, searching for elevated neutrino and tachyon readings, presumably in search of the wormhole we have heard rumors about. 7.6 Light Years from our current location we picked up a large concentration of the requisite readings. Upon investigation, the probe we launched was spontaneously transported to sector 9718b, 18 light years from the recently reported position of the USS Guardian."

Brennon nodded silently and looked to his Chief Engineer. The Tellarite, nodded and spoke up without his usual sarcasm.

"The modifications to our Warp Drive have been completed, we'll be able to travel safely at 9.980 for 40 hours before powering down to Warp 7."

The Captain nodded again and looked over to his acting First Officer. His voice quiet, but optimistic.

"Mr. Calodan, coordinate with all department heads, as soon as we get the clear from our hosts we'll make best speed for the wormhole. See to Doctor Ortega's transport. If there's nothing else..."

Brennon was interrupted by Doctor Kiv, the normally quiet Bajoran woman sitting up straight, raising her voice to be heard.

"Captain, actually I had something. It's about Doctor Ortega. He's requested permission to join us on our journey. He's had a great deal of experience in medicine in this region of space and he's already given me the written approval from his superiors. I've told him that I'd discuss it with you."

The Captain looked warily at Calodan then back to Kiv. He nodded his acquiescence and stood.

"Anyone else have something they want to spring on me? No? Good. Get it done people."

With that the Captain strode from the room, leaving his Officers to their tasks as well as with their thoughts of the situation.

Location: Sickbay, USS Hartington

Qech's eyes opened once more, her eyes looking up to side of Captain Brennon's face. He sat next to her, eyes on a PADD and completely unaware that his friend had awakened.

"Mr. Calodan, coordinate with all department heads, as soon as we get the clear from our hosts we'll make best speed for the wormhole. See to Doctor Ortega's transport. If there's nothing else..."

The meeting quickly dispersed and the department heads headed out onto the Bridge. Calodan caught Lt Ghan's attention and the two stayed back and were the last two to leave. "Lieutenant, I just wanted to say good job on the modifications. We'll be leaving immediately, so please get down to Engineering and keep everything humming. We're going to be pushing the old lady pretty hard." The Tellarite snorted derisively at someone telling him how to do his job, but with Qech still incapacitated in Sickbay, Calodan was acting XO.

The two left the conference room and Calodan headed to the center seat while Ghan headed to the turbolifts. After taking the center chair, something he was still getting used too, he surveyed the Bridge. "Ops, coordinate with our hosts and make sure that we are clear for departure. Dr. Ortega will be staying aboard. As soon as all of the remaining Edenites have departed, we will be setting course for the location of the wormhole that the Science department discovered." He glanced to the helm and smiled to see Croft back at his post. He must feel as awful as I do, he thought to himself, and he's here doing his duty the same as me. Good officer.

"Mr. Croft, we're going to be doing some high speed warp transit for about the next 10 hours. Please make sure that all the Helm officers are briefed on any concerns with that. As soon as Ops reports us clear to depart you are to engage on our course at warp 3. Accelerate to Warp 9.980 as soon as we clear the system, no need to disrupt local traffic too much with a highspeed burst right from their front doorstep."

Calodan settled back into the chair, content that the Captain's orders would be well carried out. He was still worried about Qech, but her progress seemed to be good. Hopefully soon she could take back her job and he could go back to just being the Ops officer. For now, he was focused on not screwing up...again.

Drake sat at the science station, crew in place and ship ready to head to the wormhole coordinates. Drake had already briefed the science department who were ready to collect as much information as possible as they were going through the wormhole.

Drake sat back and watched towards the center seated and viewscreen as Calodan coordinated everything with ease.
