Calodan smiled at the young Ensign's suggestion.
"Sir, I agree with Ensign McTavish's suggestion. The Williamette would be an added layer of safety for the Away Team." _________________

Uvek nodded as well. At least the thought had merit as he was not alone in voicing it. He felt privately vindicated, and slightly more confident in his assessment of the situation. He turned his attention to the probes.
The sensors were feeding atmospheric information in but he was far more interested in the Columbia. Sporadic readings appeared. He detected flickering lifeforms 10, no 5 kilometers from the runabout.
"Life signs appear to be in the vicinity of the Columbia," he reported. "However, holding consistency in the data stream is extremely difficult. In addition, I have had no luck reaching the Columbia at this time." |

Calodan used his Ops console to monitor the probes and watched the difficulties Lieutenant Uvek was having with the probes' data stream. He tapped in a series of commands and boosted the probes transmitter power to compensate. He also enabled a higher compression level on the data streams to improve communications. There was a bit of improvement in resolution.
"The signal is boosted to its absolute max now Lt. Uvek." _________________

Uvek felt he was nodding with some regularity now, but that was a good sign; a sign of progress.
"I have it now, thank you Lieutenant." He fine tuned his readings, passing information to Ops and sciences.
"Captain, there are definitely lifeforms 5 kilometers from the runabout, within the irradiated zone, and near some form of wreckage. I am still not detecting weaponry or advanced technology at this time. I am attempting to reach the Columbia now."

Ensign McTavish looked to the science station to see who was on duty as he mirrored the atmospheric information from the probes to a corner of his console. He watched the info scroll past. He was very rusty with meteorology, but maybe he could figure out if there were any storms in the area adding to the interference. Or was this planet always a murky mess?
Well if for no other reason, it might make for an interesting paper after they rescued the wounded.
McTavish resumed his long range scans of the system looking for anything out of the ordinary, only occasionally glancing at the atmospherics to see if anything lept out at him |
