Lt. Grolik
Alterran Space Station
New Assembly Hall
"No, no, no, no," Grolik said, in an uncharacteristic foul mood this day -- the 12th day of working on the new Assembly Hall ordered by Commander Talbert. "What on Earth are you thinking, Ensign, you're putting the plaques up upside down!"
Grolik strode over to a young Andorian ensign attempting to hang plaques commemorating the opening of the Federation's newest space station and the first in the Gamma Quadrant. "Sorry, sir, I hadn't realized I was."
Grolik stood next to the ensign. "You better get that changed before the Commander sees it, otherwise he'll look down on both of us with this type of foolish mistake."
Grolik turned around to view the nearly completed Assembly Hall, the only pieces missing were the chairs. Still having not arrived from Starfleet Outpost 47 in the Alpha Quadrant.
The bright lights above the seating area would make it easier for the crew to see their PADDs that they would bring with them, all of the seats focused on one center podium/table that the commander of the station would be at when addressing the crew.
If it were just the senior staff meeting, the inner seats would move in around the table for a make-shift conference room. The table expandable also for larger conference room meetings -- such as diplomatic or treaty talks.
There were four doors to the new room -- one leading directly to ops, the other to the commander's office and the other two into the general population area for the crew to filter into.
"It's looking like a masterpiece," Grolik said. "I'll have to find out from Talbert what kind of other room decorations he would like."
A suspended 3D view screen was being installed from the ceiling, while every other chair would have a small view screen. In conference room settings, there would be a large viewscreen installed on the table for all to see. "Starfleet is really giving us the best of the best," Grolik said, looking over the ensign rehanging the plaques. "That looks better, now we don't have to stand upside down to read them. After you are complete, I want you, Ensign Michaels and crewmen Jacobs and Kortel to work on installing the arm chair viewers. I'll be back in two hours to heck on the status." _________________

Chief Smith
Alterran Station
Smith and Bishop walked into the new Assembly hall. Commander Talbert had put Lt. Grolik in charge of the construction, but had asked Smith to look in on the Security measures that were to be in place.
As he walked in, he overheard Lt. Grolik, sounding like a Drill Instructor at Cape May
Lieutenant Grolik wrote: | "You better get that changed before the Commander sees it, otherwise he'll look down on both of us with this type of foolish mistake." |
Chief Smith smiled, remembering his time as a Starfleet recruit fondly.
"Good Morning Lieutenant. Beautiful day isn't it?" _________________

The Denobulan engineering chief turned to face Chief Smith and with a big smile answered. "Best day yet, Chief. How might you be doing?"
Grolik spread his arms wide as if to show off the room. "What do you think of the masterpiece? Any suggestions for security, maybe add a few hundred phaser canons from the ceiling that can sub as lights?" Grolik smiled even larger, trying to get the big security chief to crack a smile. _________________

"Frankly, sir... its too big." started Smith, "But that's so we can accomodate the phase cannons I just ordered." finished Smith, cracking a smile outside his quarters for the first time in a week.
"But seriously Lieutenant - the phaser sappers (Smith referred to a little known and seldom used piece of Federation technology that disabled all phase weapons within range) are on order and should be here from Outpost 49 within the week for instalation." _________________

Talbert entered the hall and looked around with some satisfaction. "Nice work, Lieutenant." He said. "I need to get things up and running in the docks next. When you are done here, head over to Bay 3 and see to the configuration of the magnetic clamps. Right now I don't think they'd hold anything bigger than a Bajoran Raider. I want to make sure that if we get anymore surprises we can lock down on any ship docked at this station."
"Chief Smith, I appreciate your work over the past couple days. Let's look into getting a second armory established on one of the outer arms. If we can conceal it, it could a good fallback position. You're with me."
He turned to walk out, taking one more glance around the room. Nice work, he thought, passing into the corridor. _________________

Smith left Bishop to assist Lieutenant Grolik, and followed the Commander to the outer arms. While they were walking, Smith asked Talbert:
"Commander, I've been wondering, the entire time I've been aboard the station. What exactly is my purpose here? I mean, this is one of Starfleet's most high profile projects, and I'm Chief of its Security. My service record isn't all that spectacular, so why me?" _________________

Talbert smiled. "That's a good question, Chief. I've wondered the same thing myself when it comes to my job. A full captain with diplomatic experience would have been a far better choice in my view, but they saw fit to move me around. It has something to do with the familiarity of the systems and people here, I know."
He paused, looking at his chief of security. "Your record isn't everything, Ted." He said, trying to loosen his "whip" persona and fit into a more rounded view of the captains he had known. "It has more to do with drive, capabilities, and growth potential. You're a proven team leader, solid tactician and young enough to grow into the position." They resumed walking. "Don't worry, Mr. Smith. You're doing just what you should be. Have confidence."
They rounded a corner and entered an airlock leading into one of the docking arms. _________________

When they arrived at the first viable location, Smith noted how well reinforced the Auxiliary Armory had to be. Talbert agreed to the specs, and Smith told his new boss the order would be in by day's end.
"Commander, thanks for the reassuring answer earlier. As long as Ive been doing this job, I've alweays been a little cautious when it cam to my assignments. I just want to make sure history doesn't repeat itself." said Smith, referring to an earlier incident that nerarly cost him his career. _________________

Roger nodded, fully understanding his Chief's answer. Smiling he walked back toward Ops. More to do, more to do, he thought. Still, they had a viable crew and a strong start. Despite the setback of the Ju'Tau earlier, it seems that things were actually working out. He wondered what would happen next.
"I'm going to Ops to check on Ensign Rayle. We need the new communications network checked out. Keep up the good work, Chief." _________________
