Commander Qech
Surface of unknown Klingon planet

"I agree, however...if the language barrier continues to be a problem, I could always try to speak to one telepathically. Just...putting it on the table."

Qech nodded and made an effort to keep her voice down, hoping not to spook the approaching natives further.

"Consider it solidly on the table, Lieutenant. It's likely to come to that, but let's see what the ambassador can accomplish with familiarity first. If they're anything like their cousins they will attack first and ask questions later. An unwarned telepathic connection might prompt that if we're not careful."

Aria's eyes widened. "Well, we don't want that." She carefully made sure both her hands were visible, clearly away from her phaser.

"I think it wouldn't bode well for my first Hartinton mission if we were attacked five seconds after arriving. Bad omen."

Lt. Cory Drake
Planet away team

Drake fought the urge to grab his phaser or show his fear as the away team huddled together in the center of the marketplace ... clearly not where they intended to transport too. The science officer went over and over in his head. Was it his mistake that put the away team in this position. Did he give the transporter chief the wrong coordinates, is he going to get everyone killed.

Drake stood silently, listening to the exchange between Qech and Aria and the ambassador, hoping someone would say something soon to the onlooking Klingons staring them down.

Lieutenant Korax nodded at Qech and Lioy's suggestion. Both women were turning out to be fine Officers, Qech a capable leader and Lioy certainly worthy of merit for her diplomatic knowledge. The Klingon stepped forward and addressed his kinsman in a language he hoped they would understand -- his own.

We are peaceful travelers from the High Council of the Klingon Empire and her allies, we wish to open a dialogue with your people.

Recognition crossed the face of some of the Klingons present, though none responded at first. After a moment, Korax repeated his introduction, this time adding in his name, rank and title within the Empire. This time one of the bolder Klingons spoke up, though his language was crude and unintelligible to the Away Team.

"Commander, I believe I will be unable to communicate with these people effectively. I suggest we employ Lieutenant Lioy's abilities in translating for us... I cannot be sure, but they seem to recognize the name of the Homeworld and some of the other details I'm giving, though the gap may be too large for us to gulf by simple speech."

The three minutes between engine shutdown and hard docking with the station were three of the longest minutes of the away team's life. Three minutes to do nothing but sit and wait, unable to act in any productive way. Hartington received and acknowledged their update, but for the moment, they were on their own.

A sensor sweep of the station as they approached closely revealed very little. Massive power reserves, large open spaces but no life signs of any kind. Life support was online, but at minimal levels, temperature nearing the limits of tolerance for even Coelho's augmented body.

The ship finally shuttered as it landed inside of the station's shuttle bay. Within moments, before any orders were able to be given, lights began to flicker off inside the Runabout's cabin.

Qech nodded to Lioy, and motioned for her to step forward. "You may want to make sure to keep solid eye contact Lieutenant. They may not trust you if you don't."

LOCATION: Runabout Willamette

Uvek looked at the lights, then swung to his console. "Nothing here, lieutenant. It appears to be a power drain, though for what purpose, I cannot say. I recommend environmental suits for the moment, at least until we can determine the situation and stabilize the temperature."

He stood and moved to the uniform lockers, but waited for authority to remove and don the suits themselves.

USS Willamette
Xavier Croft

Croft watched as his console shutdown of it's own accord. He attempted a few commands, but nothing happened.

"Well, so much for a chance at a quick getaway."

The station grew ever larger in the view screen. Coelho looked at the scans and readouts with focused curiosity, as if daring them to reveal some, any secret. "Given the high energy levels, and the temperature readings in the habitable zones without any signs of life, if the station wasn't intended to be unmanned, there is a chance that it is suffering some sort of serious damage to its life control. But this is a lot of technology to abandon, and no signs of repairs underway even by automated systems. More likely the coolant systems are not used when no active presence is required on the station. Very likely it could be for some industrial or scientific purpose that doesn't require a direct hand aboard, assuming it is functioning as intended."

He glanced at the environmental suits, then back at the readings. "What worries me is that if there are any forms of radiation, behind a dampening field, that could explain the heat. It could interfere with a lot of our options, and put us at some serious risk." Then the lights flickered, dimmed. Coelho watched Uvek approach the locker.

"I have to agree. We could be in some serious danger given the unknown nature of the heat source."

"Understood, sir."

Aria stepped forward to stand next to Lieutenant Korax. She had listened to his thoughts as he'd spoken, so that she'd know what to say if need arose. Now she fixed the lead Klingon with her gaze, the one who had attempted to speak to them, and projected a telepathic message to him.

Our language is too different for words to be understood. We can speak in this way instead. Simply project your thoughts at me and I will be able to hear you.

She paused to think of what to say next. Then, with a shrug, We come in peace. This Klingon... She gestured to Korax, is an emissary of the High Council of the Klingon Empire. We wish to speak with your people and learn of you.

The Klingon Lieutenant Lioy "spoke" to narrowed his eyes, seemingly taken aback by the invasion of his mind. After a moment he cocked his head and spoke out again in the unintelligible Klingon dialect, though for the Hartington's diplomatic officer the language was understood clearly in her mind.

"Outsiders do not come in peace. This is known to us! There are no Klingons away from this world. This is a trick, an Alien trick to fool us!"

As he spoke, several armored Klingon Warriors pushed their way through the crowd, making their way towards the away team. It was clear by looking at them, knives drawn, that they meant business.

As if by reaction, Lieutenant Korax drew his own d'k tahg while Lieutenant zh'Rel brought her phaser up to the ready, both taking up positions between the Away Team and the oncoming Warriors.

Location: Space Station

The airlock on the Runabout cycled and opened to allow the crewmen to exit, their magnetic boots clamping down onto the deckplate below. After a moment, when the gravity was confirmed, the boots were deactivated and allowed free movement of the team. A casual inspection of their surroundings left them with a very bleak impression. No apparent doors or windows or even a service hatch seemed to be within sight. Tricorders detected nothing beyond the walls and in fact detected nothing but solid matter in all directions around the crewmen -- save one, the way they came, back into open space.

The only recognizable feature of the room was a computer console on the far wall. It was high off the ground with a large monitor above human eye level. No power readings emanated from the console, nor did it appear to be active in any way.

Qech instinctively put her hand on her phaser when the alien Klingons began their movement forward. She didn't know what had happened, but it clearly wasn't good. Still, they were advancing, not charging. They might at least have time to leave them with an apology. They had, after all, invaded their space.

"Take no lethal force against them" she said, looking to Korax and zh'Rel. "We still have an emergency transporter lock. Lieutenant Lioy, covey an apology if that's possible at this point."

She kept her hand just inches above her commbadge, ready to get her team out of there the moment things turned sour.

Aria grimaced. "Yes, sir." She didn't understand why the Klingons had gotten so hostile. Clearly they didn't trust outsiders, but still she wondered if she had done something wrong. She ran over what she had said in her head, but it still sounded innocent to her.

But she should worry about that later. Now she had an order to follow. Again, she fixed the lead Klingon with her gaze.

You are wrong. This was not a trick. But, since we have angered you, we will depart peacefully. We apologize for our approach.

Alien Station
Xavier Croft

Croft scanned the area with a tricorder, but was unable to get a reading past the walls of their 'prison'. He glanced at Calodan, then began to slowly approach the console, noting that he might have to sit on Calodan's shoulders if he wanted to reach the controls, "Anyone think to bring a stool?"
He joked, making another vain sweep with his tricorder.

"No stool, sir, but I have an idea," Coelho said backing up to the wall with the console on it. He leaned back against it and turned on his magnetic boots. Slowly, patiently, he began to push himself upwards, his legs at an awkward angle. Each step waiting for the one before it to be firmly planted, lest he loose his balance and lock his knees."It's rather uncomfortable, but I can work the computer from the side here.... if I power it and I have permission use this technology, sir."

The young augment looked carefully at the controls beside him, for any secret they could reveal. He also examined the wall around it, as best his inconvenient angle could offer him, for any service panels, or usable features that he could stabilize himself with.
