Qech nodded, knowing that the Master-at-Arms could easily see her response from his vantage point. She considered his report for a moment and felt ill-at-ease with the information. Let's just hope they don't consider the first group to be their front line. _________________

ACTION
Moments pass quickly and silently before figures begin to crest a nearby hill. Three forms, what appeared like children ran alongside the larger, easily recognizable form of a Cardassian man. The Cardassian carried one of the child-like forms in his arms while another was latched onto his back, holding on for dear life. The group ran quickly down the hill, clearly running away from something (presumably the group that was flanking them).
At first they didn't appear to notice the Starfleet team at the bottom of the hill, though this soon changed as the Cardassian man looked up. His eyes made contact with Qech's and a glimmer of hope flooded his face. He cried out in an alien language completely unknown to the team's translators and their party started towards the Away Team.
Then came the others.
The Cardassian man motioned wildly, beckoning the Away Team to turn away.
"GO! RUN!"
No sooner as he has started to call out to them did the other aliens appear on the hill before them. The two groups of three combined to form a force of six, all with bows notched and ready to fly on the team. The newcomer called out in the same alien language spoken before, their voices echoing down the valley below. _________________

Koester aimed his rifle at the nearest archer. This didn't look good. He could kill at least two of them but they'd get arrows off at his teammates before he could kill all six of them.
He aimed his rifle at the nearest alien.
"Commander I've got a lock on the aliens. Unfortunately if I kill one or two the others can get arrows off at you." Koester said.
He moved his crosshairs and centered it on the alien's skull. "Ready to fire on your command..." he said with a whisper... |

Qech locked eyes with the panicked Cardassian as he and his diminutive allies barreled toward them, yelling frantically. The appearance of the archers left little doubt in her mind what she had to do next; protect her crew.
"Get out of range!" She yelled, turning and ushering the team and the approaching Cardassian in the direction of the Columbia. She could barely hear Koester's transmission over the chaos, but she knew they were on the same page.
"Mark!" she yelled over the combadge. _________________

Ensign zh'Rel drew her phaser into one hand, moved to the Cardassian and helped down the alien grappled to his back, allowing him to move quicker. With the alien now in her arms she pivoted around and opened fire, attempting to provide the team with some amount of cover as they made their retreat. _________________

In the middle of the fray the Captain's voice calls out from Qech's combadge.
"Hartington to Away Team. Commander Qech, report." _________________

Cadet Ázmay retreated quietly, all the while typing calmly in es tricorder, scanning the nearest alien (be it the Cardassian man or the children-like aliens). |

It was awkward trying to take an accurate shot with the quick bursts she was firing over her shoulder, and so Qech was immediately grateful for the cover fire that Ensign zh'Rel was offering as they ran. She hadn't noticed exactly how thin the atmosphere was before the fight broke out. The sudden exercise was making it far more difficult to breathe properly, and the effort was making her dizzy. She sighed with relief when she heard the Captain's voice over her combadge.
They must have figured out how to get around the interference. She hurriedly tapped her badge and spoke in labored breaths as she ran.
"We're under fire! They're using arrows! One Cardassian is accounted for, along with several others of an unknown species." She dodged a wayward arrow. "We're retreating to the Columbia." _________________

Koester fired and killed the first archer with a round through the skull. He shifted his aim and fired again killing the second archer with his second shot.
Koester fired a third time and killed a third alien.
"Koester to away team. You guys are covered. Keep heading for the runabout." he said as he tapped his commbadge... |

ACTION
As the first two aliens fall the remaining opened fire on the retreating away team. Several arrows fell dangerously close to the group as they made their way back towards the Runabout. As Crewman Koester's third shot rang out, bringing down a third alien, Ensign zh'Rel's phaser bursts take down another. up on the hilltop the aliens stood shouting out in their own tongue. To the Away Team's surprise, the aliens began to retreat, firing a last volley of arrows into a high arch, raining down upon them. None of the Starfleet personnel were hit, but a cry called out none the less. The Cardassian man, still carrying his alien charge, buckled down onto his knees as an arrow jutted out from his midsection. _________________

Keeping an eye on the retreating team, Cadet Azmay rushes to the side of the Cardassian man, and checks his wound. If he needs it, e prepares a dose of the most usual Starfleet Medical painkiller (or uses es medical tricorder).
In any case, e helps the Cardassian to stand up and offers to release him of his alien charge.
"Don't worry, this one is here to help. Let me help you carrying your burden" |

Koester said: "I've got the aliens in full retreat. Nothing else spotted. I'll keep an eye until you get to the runabout. Then I'll get into the thing." |

ACTION
The remaining aliens, clearly faced with a more powerful force, break into a sprinting retreat and quickly vanish beyond the hillside. A few minutes later, the Away Team reaches the Columbia. Ensign zh'Rel and Cadet Azmay, who had been helping the lone Cardassian since being wounded, gently lay him down on one of the bunks in the Runabout's aft section while the aliens that had been with him gather around anxiously. _________________

Qech quickly did a head count, making sure everyone was accounted for. The shuttle bay doors were left open for Koester. Assured that everyone was alright, she tapped her combadge: "Qech to Hartington. Our assailants have retreated, at least for the time being. We're heavy one Cardassian and five others in need of aid. We're waiting for Petty Officer Koester to join us before we can depart, but he's on his way."
Finishing her report, Qech approached the injured Cardassian as Azmay attended his wounds. She looked down at his tired, sweaty face and managed a reassuring smile.
"Welcome aboard the Columbia. I'm Lt. Commander Qech. This is Cadet Azmay" she said, gesturing to the medical officer. "I want to assure you that you're in good hands. I am going to need to ask you a few questions regarding how you ended up in this situation, however. How did you end up on this planet? And what do you know about the beings that we just encountered?" _________________

Pain shooting over his face, the Cardassian sat as best as he could while Azmay worked on his wound.
"My name is Jalen Kolar, I am a Professor of Anthropology at the Lakarian City University on Cardassia Prime. I was a member of an expedition sponsored by our Science Ministry. We crashed here five years ago after we experienced power failure while in the upper atmosphere."
He took in a few labored breaths -- as well as his surroundings -- before he continued his tale.
"There were 21 of us aboard the Lakesh, a crew of nine, five ministry scientists and five officers from Central Command and two... "observers" from the Obsidian Order. Only four of us survived the crash. I was rescued from the wreckage along with another of my ministry colleagues by these fellows here." Professor Kolar motions towards the aliens huddling as close as they could. "They are called the Hukana... I owe them my life. Over time I was able to learn their language. Five years is a long time after all. The other survivors were not quite as lucky however..."
Ensign zh'Rel sat down at the pilot's station and began to prepare the Columbia for lift off. Her antenna twitched as she did... something seemed off.
And then she noticed it.
"Commander," she called out, worry laced in her speech, "We're having trouble raising the Hartington and it isn't the interference from the atmosphere..." the Andorian Ensign turned to face her superior, clearly bothered by the revelation she was about to deliver. "Sir, I think that we're being purposefully jammed." _________________
