"An EM pulse should trigger another shift once we've got their signature properly attuned, but to keep them from shifting to the right time in another reality we'll have to do a little more. We should add in an ultra-low energy beam of tachyon and chronoton radation to keep their quantum signatures from being distorted into another phase. If we tune it to be the inverse wave of the ghost-signature they both share, it should also prevent any shifts in the future by realigning them with their proper place and time," Coelho looked hopefully at the gathered crew.

"We could set something up within an hour or two. I'd rather longer to test it, but there's always the chance of some kind of surprise energy surge that could trigger an uncontrolled shift and we have to beat that time table."

The Captain nodded and stepped forward, PADD in hand.

"Good work, both of you. Get to work, I want to be able to send these two home. Now, if you'll excuse us, I'd like to debrief the Lieutenants before their journey. I for one am slightly curious about the trip they've taken."

He smiled as friendly as he could, trying to put his fellows at ease... though it was less than convincing. Reluctantly, the other officers stepped out of the cargo bay, leaving the Captain alone with Lieutenants Calodan and Lioy.

"Why don't you two have a seat and we'll get started."

Aria listened numbly to a rather bewildering barrage of technobabble. Once again, she wished she had more of a background in science. Maybe then she'd understand what everyone was talking about. One thing became clear, though. They knew what the problem was. They were trying to fix it.

This was a Good Thing.

She nodded at the captain's request and sat down. "But sir, what about the Temporal Prime Directive?" A beat later she answered her own question. "Of course. We're in an alternate timeline. So nothing I tell you will negatively impact your own reality. So ask ahead. We'll be happy to tell you anything you want to know. Frankly, it'll be a relief to air a lot of it."

"And sir," she added. "I can't thank you enough for finding a solution to this thing. It's thanks to you we can get home."

Once they were alone, Captain Brennon took a seat across from Lioy and Calodan. He looked at the two time lost Officers and seemed uncertain, as if the other shoe was about to drop and Brennon himself had little control over the situation. Finally he took a breath and began.

"Back during the war I never questioned orders. It was too dangerous, one wrong move on anyone's part and the ship, the crew, the entire Federation could have been wiped out... when I think about following orders that always comes to my mind. Whatever is happening, what ever is going on around me, we follow orders because its an important part of our job. Starfleet couldn't function. I suppose that's why this is so hard. I'm about to do something that is counter to every trained Starfleet instinct I have."

The Captain extended the PADD towards Lioy and continued.

"I'm about to violate the Temporal Prime Directive. Feel free to disregard anything I'm about to say, but remember what I said about orders and know that I am not taking this decision lightly. Two weeks ago I gave an order that sent two members of this crew to their deaths. You're holding my official report. Read it, don't read it... you have two hours until we'll trigger the burst that will send you back to the point of the accident. I'll see you then."

With that, the Captain stood and marched out of the room, leaving the two officers alone with detailed information about their future.

Aria stared in disbelief at the PADD as the Captain left the room. Two officers dead... And the Captain wanted them to change it. She sat back in her seat for a moment and thought about it. How bad would it be to change history? Two lives saved weighed against unknown consequences, possibly severe, possibly not. And even if they did change something, Aria would never know the difference, never know what would have been different if those two crew members had not lived. Also, there was no doubt in her mind who one of those crewmembers might be. Someone Aria would gladly risk her life for, would gladly gamble fate for.

Put it that way and the decision wasn't even hard.

She picked up the PADD and began to read.

The Official Report of Captain Brennon wrote:
After Action Report
Captain David Brennon
Commanding Officer, USS Hartington
Stardate 54470.7

On Stardate 54467.2 the Starship Hartington entered orbit of a Class M world in GQ-S37-9-501. After an initial scan of the surface conditions, an away team was sent to gather samples to further the investigation into the planet's unique electromagnetic signature. It was at this time that I suggested Commander Davynn Qech accompany the team to the surface in order to relieve her stress levels as indicated by her latest sessions with the counseling staff. Commander Qech had not been adjusting to off duty life as well as expected and it was believed that some time away from the ship would help her. Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Kiv Lonara, was also placed on the Away Team to monitor Commander Qech's health while on the surface.

Upon arrival on the planet's surface the team almost immediatly fell under attack by a heretofore unseen Alien presence. Commander Qech and Doctor Kiv were shot by poison darts, rendering them both unconscious in a matter of seconds. An immediate beam out was requested, with the only two Female Officers present transported directly to the Hartington's sickbay where they were pronounced Dead On Arrival. Commander Qech's unborn child was also declared deceased.

Upon further investigation it was learned that the aliens residing on GQ-S37-9-501 III are a composite race. They do not have a female population and continue their civilization by luring vessels to the planet, capturing the men and forcing their way of life upon the captives. Females are seen as a threat to their society and the presence of one is considered an grave insult. Offenders are put to death immediately.

It is my official recommendation that this world be placed under quarantine and our allies be forewarned of the nature of the inhabitants.

With the deaths of Commander Qech and Doctor Kiv, Lieutenant Calodan will be promoted to temporary First Officer and Doctor T'Lau promoted to temporary Chief Medical Officer.

Aria leaned back after reading the PADD, amazed and disturbed by what it contained.

"A population that kills every woman it comes across? That...is bizarre. And Doctor Kiv again. Does he die in every reality?" She shook her head.

Her comments beside, the true tragedy of the situtation didn't escape her. That two such good officers should die in such a senseless and stupid fashion was horrible. Pointless. Aria couldn't imagine any way in which deaths such as that would be meaningful to the timeline.

Her decision was made. She would stop that event from occurring. She didn't know how, but she would. So now all that was left was to wait to return to her own time.

"What a strange trip it's been, eh?" she commented to Calodan, who had been strangely silent. At times, it was like he wasn't even there.

Two hours pass before Captain Brennon and his team return to check on the pair from the past. The Captain was accompanied by the Cadet, Doctor T'Lau and Tactical Officer Croft, as well as a few technicians that were preparing some of the necessary devices to control the discharge of energy towards the time travelers. As the crew worked around them, the Captain stepped towards Lioy.

"Are you ready?"

Croft had played enough cards with Lioy to know that her poker face was on. Something was up, and Croft felt it was probably best he didn't know about it. He stood next to the Captain, still uncomfortable with the situation but being, for the moment, a good little soldier.

Aria nodded, meeting her captain's eyes. They both knew he was asking about more than just the trip home.

"I'm ready," she answered.

The Captain nods to Lieutenant Ghan and the Tellarite enters a command sequence on his PADD. For the briefest of moments Aria is feels as though time itself had stopped, seeing the crewmen around her all frozen in place before witnessing the brightest flash imaginable. The surrounding air became superheated and it felt to her as though she was burning up. Just as the pain became unbearable, the Betazoid passed out.

An indeterminate amount of time passed before Aria's consciousness returned to the world. Muted voices and dull colors greeted her as she opened her eyes, but one thing was unmistakable:

Commander Qech.

Qech had a hand on Lioy's shoulder, and was attempting to help her up.

"Aria, are you alright?"

She looked past the Betazoid, concern etched on her face. "Lieutenant Woods, could you see to Lieutenant Calodan please?"

She looked back to Lioy, now supporting her weight with one arm. "That discharge didn't hit you did it? Come on, let's get you two to sick bay, I'm not taking any chances."

"I...what?" Aria blinked around her, taking in her surroundings. Of course, this was right after panel exploded. The moment when she had started shifting through time.

It was over. Aria felt a smile wrap around her face. "I'm fine," she replied. "I'm not hurt." She beamed at Qech, who was looking healthy and completely alive. "And you're all right as well," she added. Let Davynn think it was a question. She was just glad to see her friend.
