Walters was finding how difficult it was only having one hand to use the console, the other bracing himself with the increasing turbulence.
"This is getting fun." he thought to himself.
"No, that's not right, peoples lives are in danger." He corrected himself half aloud.
He prepared the probe for one final mission before he would likely lose contact with it once they landed.
It's new directions are to bring it into a quick ascent vector and return to a stable geosynchronos orbit above thier position and send out a burst transmition every 1 minute until the Hartington responds. Eventually it will regain contact. Upon LT Uvek's orders he prepared a typed message to be sent and ordered the probe on it's way.

"Willimet in imminent danger due to extreme atmospheric conditions.
We will be landing in support of the away team in 15 minutes."

With that he initiated the probe's new orders

"Aye Sir. Ill bring us down 100 meters above the Columbia's position. That should give us a good view of whats happening and keep the turbulence from driving us through the Columbia. May I respectfully remind the Lieutenant that landing is going to be problematic? Ill try and reroute through secondaries but I may also have to angle the deflector shields to cushion our landing."
"Everyone hang on. Cadet Walters, This is one of those stories your going to tell your classes."

The runabout lurched and then the comm circuits chirped with an incoming message.

"Ops to the Williamette, we've got you in a tractor beam and are pulling you to safety. Reroute power to your structural integrity field and hold on, it's going to be a bumpy ride."

"Lt Uvek, Inertial Dampers becoming critical. I am rerouting the remaining power from the warp coils to the Structural Integrity Field but she is taking one hell of a beating. We are already down to 85%. I recommend Sealing off the aft and midships sections and using the power from life support from those two areas to bolster the fields."
With a sudden bounce and drawn out shudder, "I think we just lost the tractor beam array."
McTavish reached under his seat and into the Cargo compartment, pulling out the bag he had first brought on board. He pulled the strap across his chest. With a wicked grin, he asked,"Anyone else bring a parachute?"

"Fvadt!" cursed Uvek. The runabout was pulling backwards, against the rough skies. Sparks were flying from the main controls as the ship bucked against the sudden and unexpected power of the Hartington's tractor beam, trying to maintain its current position. Without prior preparation, the engines were now actually working AGAINST them.

"Mr. -Kuplo, forget everything I said!" he bellowed. "Transfer ALL available power to the structural integrity fields! Mr. Walters, SHUT DOWN SENSORS AND COMMUNICATIONS!" His fingers flew over his station, coaxing every last ounce of power out of the runabout. "All systems except minimal life support needs to be funneled into the integrity fields." He turned a black look to Mr. McTavish. "If this fails, you may need to use that!" referring to his parachute device. "Stand by to restart maneuvering thrusters if we can't break the atmosphere!"

Walters curses to himself. "Why does daddy have to pick us up from the game early?" He lowly mutters as he starts emergency shut down proceedures of all of the sensors and instrumentation. Before the communictations were cut he told the probes to ascend to follow the sepatated probe for easier retrieval.

Uvek shot a glance to Walters through the clearing haze of his panel fire. "There is all ready one team in danger, Cadet," he said, "The captain is rightfully pulling us out to avoid having another! Don't worry how I heard that Mr. Walters," he continued, "Just know that these ears are not merely ornamental."

The ship bucked and sizzled. He may not be pulling us anywhere if this keeps up, he thought to himself.

On board the Hartington, Lieutenant Calodan works to ease the recover of the Williamette. He tweaks his subroutine a bit more to compensate for the atmospheric conditions and the forward momentum of the runabout.

"I wish to apologize, Lt Uvek. Trying to keep the the mood light." McTavish had wiped the grin from his face. "I believe the only power source we havent poured into the structural integrity fields are the emergency batteries. Im standing by to retake flight control should it be needed. Sir? Do you want us going up or down?"

The runabout cleared the atmosphere and sailed back toward the Hartington. Uvek looked at his pilot. "Standby to transfer residual power to the maneuvering thrusters," he replied, "We'll take her into the ship slowly."

He touched his commbadge. "Uvek to Hartington, we are clear of the atmosphere, disengage the tractor beam, as we should be able to maneuver into the shuttlebay under emergency power."

An inglorious end to his first Federation mission, to be sure, he thought. So much for that. His mind turned to the men and women on the planet's surface, concern flooding his mind. He shrugged it off momentarily and turned to his crew. "You performed well," he said, "Do not feel dissatisfied. The upper atmosphere was just too much for this size vessel. Perhaps the Hartington itself will fare better."

The runabout limped into the hangar bay, and McTavish settled it on deck easily enough, even without the main engines.

Uvek hardly waited for the bay to be secured before standing and moving to the door. He paused only a moment before turning to the crew again.

"As soon as the situation on the surface is settled, we will meet with Mr. Calodan and perhaps the captain to discuss our after-action report. You will be required to attend in the team room. Mr. McTavish, accompany me to the bridge. MR. Walters and Mr. -Kuplo, remain here and assess the damage."

He opened the doors and stepped out, heading to the turbolift. His mood was dark, fuming that he couldn't have better handled that situation. But the shudders he felt through the deck of the starship let him know that there was nothing he could have done. Still...
He waited at the turbolift for McTavish to catch up.

Walters stood and took a moment to clear his head after LT Uvek cleared the runabout.
"What went wrong?" He said aloud seemingly to no one in particular.
He pressed his hand against a bulkhead. "You shouldn't have had this much trouble, girl. The Columbia made it down, didn't it?"
Walters moved back next to his station. The smell of fried circuits and relays a stark reminder of what had just transpired. "Why..." he trailed off.
He booted his console back up and initiated a full diagnostic of all the systems.
While the diagnostics ran he pulled up the specialized logs he had had the computer keep. "There must be an answer." He sat down, and immersed himself in the data.

McTavish looked out the port hole as the runabout shuddered to a stop. He could see the Chief staring first at the runabout and then at the long scrape marks across the shuttle bay.

Lt Uvek stepped out of the of the Willamette. McTavish stretched, trying to work the tension from his body, as he stood from the conn.
"If you have any trouble with the diagnostics, dont hesitate to ask the Chief out there. He is a bit gruff but he shouldnt give you too many problems." The grin had crept back across McTavish face.
McTavish took one last look around the runabout, bulkheads blackened, sparks bursting from behind panels, before stepping through the hatch.
McTavish patted the hatchway saying,"Thank you, girl."

The Chief was still staring at the runabout and his deck. McTavish pulled his d'k tahg from his belt and dropped it into the bag hanging from his neck. He then pulled the strap over his head and handed the bag to the Petty Officer 3rd class standing at the Chiefs elbow. "Drop that off in my quarters, please." The PO3 nodded, gave one last look at the Chief, looked back with raised eyebrows at McTavish and set off at a run to one of the secondary turbo lifts.
On the outside the Willamette looked even worse. To McTavish the runabout looked like a child had grabbed the ship and tried its best to twist and torque the ship out of existence. A very big child.
"Take it easy on the Cadets, Chief. Ill return later and you can have your pound of flesh." McTavish laughed lightly as he turned to follow Uvek.
The Chief never looked away from the Willamette. "Bet your ass. Did you use the bag?"
"No Chief, we didnt have a need for it this time."
McTavish, quickened his pace, meeting LT Uvek at the turbolift.

Uvek was quiet on his ride to the bridge. He didn't like failure, extenuating circumstances or no. He formulated his thoughts. Just before the turbolift reached the bridge he turned to Ensign McTavish.

"You displayed skill, Ensign. Thank you." The doors opened and he exited without waiting for a response. He moved across the bridge to the captain's chair, feeling the ship shudder beneath his feet yet again.
