Qech turned from the Cardassian and regarded Ensign zh'Rel with an expression of guarded concern. "Can you trace the source?" She asked, inwardly considering the possibilities. She doubted that a race that was using bows and arrows against them could possibly be advanced enough to override their communications system; but then again, anything was possible.

Ázmay keeps working on the Cardassian while e listens to Lt. Commander Qech.

"Do not worry, professor Kolar. These wounds have a tendency to look worse than they are. This one guesses that you will soon be back in perfect shape."

E could feel, inside es mind, es appetitive mind wanting to scream, and es affective mind wondering about how these five years among aliens had been. Es rational mind, smoothly as always, took the reins.

Koester came into the runabout just then. After glaring at the Cardassian for a brief moment he made his report: "Commander the aliens fled the field. I think they were rattled by facing a superior force but I'll use my exographic sight and the micro-transporter option on the TR-116 to see if anyone's approaching the ship. It's only got a 2.5 km radius though."

Koester made the report in a low voice to Qech so the Cardassian wouldn't hear him.

Since he walked in when zh'Rel made her report he stated: "It sounds like there still might be other Cardassians alive on the planet. Maybe they're jamming us."

((sorry I havent been posting. things are crazy here))

Byron was aiding Azmay in treating the Cardassian, while also giving some thought to the reports of his crewmen. "Excuse me, Professor Kolar, is there anything more you can tell us about the civilization here? Can you think of anyone that might be jamming us?"
He hoped he wasn't speaking out of turn.

Petty Officer Smith came to the makeshift medical triage area.

"Excuse me, Commander?" he politely interjected. "You may want to see this."

Lt. Cdr Qech looked at the Desktop PADD that Smith and Koester were huddled over. "What's that?"

"It's a tactical overview the computer generated while we were outside making contact. These tactics... they haven't been used since the Late 1600's on Earth. If I didn't know better, I'd say we marched right into a Sioux attack pattern. They're protecting something."

Professor Kolar shook his head, seemingly confused.

"No... The Hukana are a very technologically primitive. When we crashed here they had no conception of anything other than their own corner of this world. Most of our technology was destroyed in the crash, I don't think anything survived that could be jamming your radios."

The Cardassian winced as the medics finished patching him as best as they could... he would need surgery when they returned to the Hartington. He took Lieutenant Kantu by the arm and looked into the Bajoran's eyes.

"Your Commander will need to hear the rest of my story... it may be important to you."

Ensign zh'Rel looked from Koester to Smith to Qech to Kolar and finally back to Qech. She seemed apprehensive as she started to speak.

"Sir, Mr. Koester is right. There may be more Cardassians on this world... he said at least three others survived the crash of their ship... But I'm not sure that they could be the ones jamming our signal. At the very least we should return to the Hartington to get that man some medical attention."

She stopped and looked back towards their other passengers.

"Though I'm not so sure what we should do about them."

The Comm signals chirp with a boost of static and Lieutenant Calodan's voice can barely be heard over the interference.

"Hartington to <STATIC>company in orb<STATIC>ving to intercept. <STATIC> masking your takeoff <STATIC> cloud. Comms <STATIC> down <STATIC>lear the atmosphere."

Stardate: 53772.5

Qech nodded as each of them delivered their concerns in turn, all the while looking over the PADD that Petty Officer Smith had handed her. While the term "Sioux" was unfamiliar to her, having only learned human history at the Academy, she could at least place the date well enough for a decent idea of what he meant. They were a primitive race.

She handed the PADD back to Smith and looked briefly about the cockpit, finally speaking when she arrived at her decision.

"I agree that the likeliness of these aliens being responsible for the jam is low. And the possibility of any surviving Cardassians is a factor. However, it doesn't seem to make any sense as to why they would jam our signals if they have any equipment left for such a thing. You'd think they'd serve to benefit from our aid as much as the Professor. I won't rule them out, but I'm going to remain skeptic until we have more information. In the meantime..." She looked toward Ensign zh'Rel, "our first priority is to get the Professor back to the Hartington."

"As for the others..." Qech paused, and looked toward the cockpit doors. "It may be a breach of the Prime Directive to bring them with us. But if shipping them back would ultimately get them killed I don't think, given the moral issues, that we could afford not to take them. The arrival of the Cardassians have already contaminated their culture. They seem almost ... dependent on him now." Qech could picture the small, fragile creatures as they clung to the Cardassian during the flight back to the shuttle. There was no denying that the Professor, and perhaps even his fellows, had offered a form of protection for them. She just couldn't sever that bond, and she had a feeling the Cardassian may not return to the ship without them.

She looked back over to the Helmsmen. "Lay in a course to rendezvous with the Hartington. We can puzzle this mystery from a safer vantage point there. And if the Captain has any objections about the Professor's... friends, I will take full responsibility."

As Qech finished issuing her orders, Lieutenant Calodan's voice issued forth out from the void and their combadges.

"Hartington to <STATIC>company in orb<STATIC>ving to intercept. <STATIC> masking your takeoff <STATIC> cloud. Comms <STATIC> down <STATIC>lear the atmosphere."

Ensign zh'Rel slipped back into the pilot's seat and finished the preflight, looking to the Commander.

"Sounds like trouble... do you think they've figured out who's jamming us?"

As she finishes her sentence, Runabout Columbia lifted off of the ground and soared towards the heavens.

Ázmay scanned the Hunaka, doing es best not to disturb them, wondering whether they were children, young adults or adults.

The tall, pale Loráby looked carefully at each of the aliens, trying to memorize each of their faces, all the while flexing, one by one, each of the fingers in es six-fingered, two-thumbed hands, a Lorábyn mental exercise to improve calm and concentration.

E wondered what they would be thinking of em, with es almond-shaped big, deep eyes, es nostrils up in es face -between the superciliar arches- and es two long, stylish, always fluttering olfactory feathers.

All in all, e already thought he knew what the more humanoid aliens thought of em, despite their politeness and careful indiference.

E inhaled deeply, trying to identify the Hunaka's smell, and learn to distinguish between it and that of Cardassians, Humans and other species.

"Hartington to <STATIC>company in orb<STATIC>ving to intercept. <STATIC> masking your takeoff <STATIC> cloud. Comms <STATIC> down <STATIC>lear the atmosphere."

Qech strained to make out Calodan's words as the blotched communication filtered through the atmospheric static. Aside from simply shrugging her shoulders, all she could really do was to agree with Ensign zh'Rel; it did sound like trouble. She leaned over the flight console, a look of deep concentration on her face.

"I'm not sure," she said finally. "The jam is obviously not in effect anymore, but there's just too much interference to make out the message." She sighed, but decided quickly that they did not have enough time, given the Professor's injuries, to delay the Rendezvous. "We're going to have to take a risk and make our way back to the Hartington. Keep an eye on the sensors, just in case. That message could have been anything between an imminent warning, to an invitation for a Raktajino in the team room."

She straightened, and looked toward Koester and Smith. "Let me know if there are any problems. I'm going to see how our guest is faring." Giving a respectful nod to her companions, she left the cockpit and made her way toward the aft section of the ship.

After the partial message filtered through and it was clear they were preparing to take off, Qech began walking toward Byron, Azmay, and the Cardassian. "Excuse me, Lieutenant Commander, Professor Kolar would like you to hear the rest of his report." He continued to assist the Loraby in assessing and treating the multiple patients.

"Ma'am, we can't rule out the fact that the other Cardassian survivors might not be too friendly towards the Federation." Koester replied: "It might not be logical for them to jam our communications but they could just hate us enough to do so. Trust me. I know hate makes us do irrational things."

Koester couldn't help but eye the Cardassian survivor with intense suspicion. His glare seemed to say: "Try anything and you will regret it."

After leaving the cockpit, Qech saw Lt. Byron walking toward her from the aft section.

"Excuse me, Lieutenant Commander, Professor Kolar would like you to hear the rest of his report."

Qech nodded and followed at a brisk pace to where their Cardassian guest was resting. She was only dimly aware of Koester's presence behind her until he addressed her:

"Ma'am, we can't rule out the fact that the other Cardassian survivors might not be too friendly towards the Federation. It might not be logical for them to jam our communications but they could just hate us enough to do so. Trust me. I know hate makes us do irrational things."

Qech spun around and faced the Master-at-Arms with a very stern look of her own. "Your concerns are noted, Crewman. As I've said before, the possibility of Cardassian survivors has not been ruled out. However, I do believe you are letting your personal experiences color your reasoning in this situation. Our priorities have been made clear. We can speculate further aboard the Hartington."

She followed his hardened gaze to the injured Cardassian, and shot him a warning look. When she spoke again, it was in slightly a hushed tone."I understand your trepidation, Mr. Koester. But I think your time would be better spent in different company for the time being."

Professor Kolar was laying still when Qech entered the aft section. Azmay and Kantu had moved on to an inspection of the aliens. At first glance they did indeed appear to be child sized, only a meter and a half tall. When inspected a short distance, however, they were covered in a thick layer of matted hair. Most interestingly, the hair appeared to change color with regard to the Alien's environment. At the moment, all four aliens were the same grayish color of the deck plating.

Professor Kolar lay watching them, an almost serene smile crossed his face. Whether it came from the pain killers or affection towards the aliens, only Counselor Zeara could know. He sat up as best as he could as the Commander approached, wincing as he did.

"Commander Qech, thank you for seeing me... I know you must have a lot to take care of at the moment."
