Qech put her hand up in an effort to get him to sit back. "Don't strain yourself" she said calmly. Her bedside manner seemed to be kicking in. "I was told you wanted to speak to me."

The Cardassian sat back and sighed with comfort -- or at least a slight relief in the pain he was feeling. After a moment his eyes opened and he looked up at Qech.

"My compatriots, the other two who survived the crash of our ship, they are the ones behind the attack on the surface. They were rescued by another tribe and they have been more..." he paused for a moment, searching for the right wording, "caviler with their knowledge."

Kolar motioned towards the diminutive aliens, his eyes lingering on them for a time before he looked back to Qech.

"The Hukana are a gentle people, Commander... far too giving. Did you know that they have no word for 'war'?" His lip quivered for a moment and a tear fell down his gray face. "At least they didn't until we came... Oloc and Unia, the other two survivors, taught their rescuers about greed. About violence. Emora and I believed we were the only survivors, once we had recovered enough we returned to the ship and took... well we took most of the supplies we could salvage. Oloc and Unia were very angry with us and used their tribe to strike back at us. They managed to salvage a handful of disruptors and have been using them and a few other choice pieces of technology to influence the Hukana."

A quiet sob escaped Kolar's throat, his eyes wet with tears

"We did all we could for the ones that gave us refuge, we even offered to leave them... they wouldn't let us. They take their duty to us very seriously. To them, we need them. Maybe they're right." he shook his head and continued, "In any case, we were at the wreckage securing some of the remaining medical supplies when they attacked."

Kolar took a finger to his eye, wiping away a few tears. "I don't know what you'll do with all of this information but I felt you should know everything."

"Your concerns are noted, Crewman. As I've said before, the possibility of Cardassian survivors has not been ruled out. However, I do believe you are letting your personal experiences color your reasoning in this situation. Our priorities have been made clear. We can speculate further aboard the Hartington."

Koester nodded in deference to Lieutenant Commander Qech's statement and went back to scanning the terrain through the sights of his TR-116. He passed Petty Officer Smith and issued a command: "Do not let that Cardassian out of your sight for one second. He may be wounded and currently not hostile but that could change."

Koester couldn't help but feel that similar primal feeling of being on the hunt yet again. If any of those other Cardies crossed into his sights he would kill them immediately. For what they took from him death was the kindest treatment. [/i]

Qech listened quietly as the Professor told his tale, and she couldn't help but feel pity for him. Thankfully, most of her 'post-war rage' was reserved for the Jem'Hadar, and by extent, the Vorta. She nodded slowly as he finished speaking.

"I gather from the events that Emora was killed in the attack. Was it you who sent out the distress signal?"

Azmay looked at the aliens, on hearing the Cardassian professor speaking about the Hukana, balancing compassion and curiosity. E wondered whether they were in control of the chamaleon-like effect displayed by their hair.

It was a curious adaptative advantage, indeed, one that some strains of the Zethny and es own people, the Loraby proper, had developed as a weapon against predators... and would-be-prey. The Ab-Loraben, on the other hand, had always been the same slightly iridiscent tone of white marble.

Deeply curious, e spoke to the Hukana, wondering whether they would be able to understand es words: "Do not worry. This one is not here to harm you".

Just in case (one could never know how long the hand of the Lorabyn forefathers had come) e then proceeded to speak to them in the Lorábyn language, soft and full of sibilant consonants... not expecting, in any case, to see any sign of understanding in the Hukana's faces.

As Azmay began speaking Kantu turned and regarded him with soft curiosity. He listened to him speaking in what he assumed was his native tongue. What a curious being... I really should get to know him when we have time...

"I gather from the events that Emora was killed in the attack. Was it you who sent out the distress signal?"

Kolar nodded sadly at the Commander's correct inference.

"Yes, Commander, on both counts. Emora was killed by our former crewmates several weeks ago. As for the distress signal, it was activated just before we entered the atmosphere... but we assumed that the interference kept anyone from hearing the call. I'm glad that you heard it Commander, I just wish that you could have come a few weeks earlier.

One of the Hukana looked up to Azmay, wide eyes blinking as he speaks first in Standard and then in his own language. There seems to be some sort of recognition in the little alien's eyes, not necessarily recognition of the language but rather of the softness in Azmay's voice. It smiled gently and reached up towards the Loraby with it's slight hands.

Qech's combadge chirps and out comes the voice of Ensign zh'Rel.

"Commander, I need you in the cockpit. We're picking something up on sensors you may want to see..."

Qech regarded the tired Cardassian and his companions for a moment before speaking: "So do I" she said simply. She was about to continue her questioning when she was interrupted by her combadge.

"Commander, I need you in the cockpit. We're picking something up on sensors you may want to see..."

Qech tapped her badge. "On my way, Ensign." She politely excused herself before moving back toward the cockpit, feeling slightly nervous about whatever it was zh'Rel wanted to show her.

Why do I have a feeling that this is bad news? she thought to herself as she stepped through the doors. The cockpit felt cool compared to the aft section of the ship. Azmay must have turned the temperature up a notch to make his patient more comfortable. She adjusted quickly to the change and sat down in the co-pilot's chair, greeting the Andorian Ensign with a sardonic smile.

"Can I assume Lt. Calodan wasn't asking for drinks in the team room?"

The Andorian pilot motioned to the sensor readout, her head shaking.

"I'm thinking 'no' sir... I honestly don't know what to think. We'll know soon enough, we're about to breach the atmosphere."

The sensors read very clearly a large explosion in the upper parts of the dense atmosphere. Charged particle weapons unlike Starfleet shipboard phasers were the culprit but that was all that could be determined.

ACTION

The Columbia emerged from the planet's atmosphere, wreckage bouncing off of the small ship's hull. The Hartington sat in orbit above them. All seemed to be alright with their mothership, though she was clearly suffering from some sort of damage. A call came from the ship, giving the Runabout clearance to dock.
