Ungh....Uvek awoke with a headache. Where am I? A quick, if nauseating glance around the room told him he was in a Romulan sickbay. Green walls, bleeping comms, and sterility. No one else was around, at least that he could tell, but with the pounding in his ears he could not be certian.
Ta krenn, blood on my sheets! What the hell happened?[/i] He struggles to a sitting position, puts his hand to his head and realizes he's bleeding green through the bandage. Slowly, awareness returns to him. Memories flash through his semi-closed eyes...memories of an explosion, an escape, Federation surgeons. OF COURSE...[/i]
Three days ago, he was on board the Defiant, a Federation ship, having been picked up and delivered from the hulking wreck of an escape pod in the Gamma Quadrant. The medics had done what they could to stabilize him, but Romulan biology was still no one's specialty, and they quickly contacted DS9's Romulan attache. Five days ago he was onboard a Keldon warship, part of a fleet under the command of Colonel Lovok and a cardassian named ?Tain?, entering the GC on a preemptive strike against the Founders.
It seemed simple enough. A team of Tal Shiar would work with the Cardassians, educate them in the use of cloaking technology, and support them in what should have been the first, perhaps last, major action of a coming war. Then all hell broke loose. There were explosions everywhere. Power was going down all over the ship, Jem'Hadar warships were EVERYWHERE. Then, the lights went out.
When he regained consciousness again, it was on the Defiant. During a blackout (both on the ship and in his body), he must have made it to a pod and jettisoned away from the destroyed fleet. In a haze, he was able to sit up. The Federation troops had their hands full with something outside the ship, so they were not paying attention to Uvek. He moved slowly, shakily, toward a computer terminal. His years behind Federation lines allowed him to easily break their security codes and in moments he knew what the excitement was. The Jem'Hadar were pursuing them toward the wormhole.
No time to worry about that, he thought, besides, I'm going to pass out soon. He thumbed the controls once more, seeking out the latest log entries and comm signals. And there, in front of his Romulan eyes, was the truth. The Cardassians were moving into position against the Federation, the Klingons were moving into position against the Cardassians, and Colonel Lovok was being named a Dominion spy! A spy! Against his own people? Against the Rihannsu? A Tal Shiar Colonel? NO! State security was always the province of the Tal Shiar but, betraying an entire fleet of fellow Romulans to the enemy? It had never happened before. It could not happen now! He felt faint, the room spun, and he fell, slamming into the floor.
Fast forward 3 years....Uvek has confirmed his worst suspisions. During the past 3 years the war has raged in the Alpha quadrant. While the Romulans have remained largely uninvolved, there have been border skirmishes. BUT, more importantly, Uvek has been discovering a conspiracy that reaches to the very Senate itself! Somehow, he managed to get himself posted to internal security, and worked overtly on keeping Romulan interests contained from outside eyes. But, he covertly worked his contacts, and with all his skills, to follow a trail that seemed to implicate Senators and, dare he say it, a Praetor!
Suddenly, Tal Shiar agents all over the Empire were disappearing: Outlying posts, sudden deaths, imprisonment. All over the order. It was time to go. Whatever was happening, whoever was involved, Uvek would never find them if he was dead.......Knowledge is power, power is only good if you can use it.
The Federation needs knowldege, and they have power....the Federation it is... |
