To: LTJG Solek, USS Hartington Counselor
From: CDR Deanna Troi, USS Enterprise-E Counselor

Subj: Petty Officer Koester

LTJG Solek, I recently have spoken to a new crewmember checking onto the USS Hartington as the Master-at-Arms - Petty Officer Karl Koester, formerly of 121st Joint Composite Security Squadron. He voluntarily chose to speak to me after suffering from one of his self described 'periodic sleepless nights'.

I suspected that this was the result of his experiences on Datana IV during the Dominion War and believe his symptoms are those of post traumatic stress disorder, survivor's guilt, and what I sense is a deep sense of rage.

I have attached a transcription of key elements of my talk with Petty Officer Koester.

Question: Please describe your wartime service.

Koester: At the time of the outbreak of hostilities I served with the Alpha Section, 195th Security Forces Squadron. We were overrun by the first Cardassian/Dominion offensives and I was forced into hiding with two of my teammates where we waged a guerilla war against the Cardassians and Dominion for nearly seven months. I was the only survivor. I would later join the 121st Joint Composite Security Squadron, a joint Marine/Starfleet security unit detailed to guard key areas of the Chin'Toka System. My own detachment of thirty men, attached to the (Note: 29th Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Battalion, G-Company) was tasked with securing the communications array on AR-558.

Q: In your wartime record you state that you killed over three hundred Jem'Hadar, Cardassians, and Vorta with a TR-116 rifle, is this the case?

K: Yes. They expended a number of man hours and soldiers to hunt me down.

Q: Nurse Ogawa's notes from your recovery mention that you talked of 'hunting Cardies with extreme prejudice'...

K: Yes. I killed them. No. I feel no guilt in doing so. They were trying to kill me.

Q: You seem especially angry with the Cardassians?

K: Is that really so bad. Anger kept me alive and on my toes on Dantana and on numerous other battles with the lizards.

Q: Perhaps racial slurs...

K: Slurs. Lizards. That's all they are, humanoid, sentient but barely, lizards!

Q: Why do they invoke such anger in you?

K: The prisoners put to work, survivors of overrun outposts or half-wrecked ships, on that orbital hellhole being used to construct an artificial wormhole were jailed by Cardassian and Jem'Hadar guards. The Cardassians were the most overbearing abusers. It was a joy to send those unholy bastards to hell where they belong...

Q: Wouldn't you agree that Cardassians have suffered too?

K: The Dominion didn't go far enough in my opinion. The traitorous bastards should've been killed to the last child!

Counselor Solek, this line I put in bold was the one I found most disturbing. Clearly Koester has suffered a deeply personal loss of some kind that goes beyond the loss of colleagues to the Cardassians, but I've been unable to get him to reveal what the loss was.

On another note, it seems that the German Shepherd Dog that accompanies him is a stabilizing influence. Several times during our talk the dog would comfort him by its presence...
