Reporting as Uvek
The communcator lit up and the Cardassian face filled the viewer. At once irritation turned into a broad reptilian smile.
"Uvek!" said the scaly necked officer. "You old space dog, haven't had enough of us yet, eh?" His eyes widened as he noted the Romulan's Starfleet uniform. "So, the rumors were true...very curious, Lieutenant. I never thought it possible."
Uvek nodded to his counterpart. "Gul Dulong," he replied, "I see you haven't gained anything but weight since I last saw you, judging from your rank."
The Gul laughed aloud. "No, you Romulan bastard, they just don't appreciate talent around here!" Uvek smiled back. Balderdash, thought the Rihannsu, they just know too much about you and how to keep an eye on you. Uvek's face grew serious and he leaned closer to his console, as if gaining more privacy.
"Listen, the security chief here only allowed me a short time on his communications array, and it took an order from an Admiral to get it. I need your help." Gul Dulong's countenance also changed.
"Of course you do," he replied, "Why else would people such as we converse, eh? The family, the memories? What is on your mind?"
Uvek glanced around the sparse security office. "I am entering the Gamma quadrant, on behalf of the Federation. A particular admiral would greatly appreciate the opportunity to 'trade information' from time-to-time. I had hoped you would still be available and in less than perfect standing with your superiors."
The Cardassian smiled ironically. "Oh, the council still remembers me, when they need a whipping post." He replied. "They will never forgive me for sharing information on the results of their invasion plan with the Federation." He leaned back. "But, as long as I stay in my cellar and avoid contact with anyone, say, like you..I'm fine. Besides, things seemed to turn nasty at the end of the war, so I am occasionally viewed as a visionary".
"Right," countered Uvek. "Well, stay well and ready. I may call on you sooner than either of us wants." His smile offset his words, and the Gul burst out laughing. "Of course, old spy. For the Federation....that's a good one." Uvek reached over and punched the transmission off. He sat for a moment looking at the blank screen. Yes, he thought to himself, almost with surprise, for the Federation. _________________
