Uvek smiled to himself, then turned to PO Koester.

"Mr. Koester," he said quietly, "While no appreciates your skills more than I, perhaps the bridge is not the best place to use that." He indicated the eyepiece and the weapon. "Why don't you store it for now? You have other talents we could use, not to mention your hand-to-hand, yes? Thank you."

"Captain," he said changing the focus, "I do not detect anything in the vicinity that presents a threat at the moment. If we are 100 years in the past, it will have to be a very deliberate act if there is any other technology on par with our own. Otherwise, I doubt anything but the borg would be much of a threat. However, scans are continuing."

Qech continued working at the console, but she felt slightly distracted. She could tell that Solana was feeling the same thing when the vulcan slowly turned and looked over her shoulder, arching an eyebrow. Qech followed suit, only to see Ambassador Rolen hovering just behind them, a look of morbid curiosity on his face. He acknowledged them with his usual smile, seemingly unaware that he was intruding on their concentration. Qech offered the Vorta a smile, and spoke politely.

"Ambassador, we're at a yellow alert. I'm afraid that means I'm going to have to ask you to leave the bridge, as comforting as your presence may be." She grinned slightly. "I'm sure you understand."

With that she turned back to Lt. Solana. "Lieutenant, let's see if we can't get an exact lock on the origin of these tachyon particles. They have to be coming from somewhere.. It may be the 'yellow-brick-road' we're looking for."

"Makes you want to think twice next time you take a sonic shower."

Lieutenant Solana had been paying very close attention to the data streaming over her console as Qech had spoken the words. As such, she hadn't noticed Koester's potentially offensive behavior. In the moments after the words passed the Commander's lips, Solana did three discrete things.
    1) Look up and around, her eyes falling on Koester.
    2) Cock an eyebrow
    3) Look back to Qech
"Curious."

For the Captain's part, he was hunched over an auxiliary science station, examining the data as well. He had noticed Koester and Rolen, but left everything in the capable hands of his Officers. Brennon heard Commander Qech's order for Rolen to leave the Bridge as well as Lieutenant Uvek's request for Koester to stow the rifle. Inwardly, Captain Brennon smiled to himself and nodded, he had a top notch crew.

"Ambassador, we're at a yellow alert. I'm afraid that means I'm going to have to ask you to leave the bridge, as comforting as your presence may be. I'm sure you understand."

The Vorta Ambassador inclined his head, a gesture of acquiescence on his part, and moved towards the nearest turbolift without so much as a sarcastic word. It seemed that he did know some modicum of prudence after all.

"Lieutenant, let's see if we can't get an exact lock on the origin of these tachyon particles. They have to be coming from somewhere.. It may be the 'yellow-brick-road' we're looking for."

Solana looked back to Qech, an expression of confusion on her face as she tried to wrap her Vulcan mind around the deeply illogical human expression. After a moment she simply gave up, shaking her head ever so slightly and continued her work.

"Aye, Commander."

News came after only a few minutes more of searching. Solana checked the data twice before turning in her seat.

"Commander, I believe I have found something. A planet 0.3 Light Years from our current position. There are tachyon particles emanating from a point on the planet's surface."

Qech looked over the data, following the tachyon trail of bread crumbs (to use another phrase that the Vulcan would find confusing) back to the planet's surface. She looked up from the Console, catching the Captain's attention. "Sir, we've traced the source of the Tachyon particles. Lt. Solana was able to follow them to a planet's surface, about 0.3 Light Years from here. It's a likely 'temporal epicenter', so to speak."

Koester nodded and slung his weapon before moving it to sling at his side. "Roger sir. I just want to clarify if we have any uninvited guests."

He replied: "My apologies. I tend to believe luck favors the prepared."

Uvek nodded to him, then refocused his efforts on the tactical readouts.

Koester's place on the bridge was slightly unusual, Uvek knew, but he wanted more than anything else to give the security man something to focus on besides killing. Being here and working to coordinate the teams would hopefully open him to other avenues, and perhaps give his mind something to work on beyond the past. Being with the bridge crew might just elevate his ambitions.

ACTION

Captain Brennon orders the Hartington to travel to this "temporal epicenter" in an attempt to discover what they could about the particulars, the hows and the whys of their situation. While en route, he calls a staff meeting in the Conference Room for all Senior Staff to discuss a plan of action.

(OOC: The following player characters are ordered to the meeting- Qech, Calodan, Uvek, Zeara, Croft, Newell)

Location: Deck One Conference Room, USS Hartington

The crew sat at the table, enthralled as they listened to Lieutenant Solana give her report. Like most Vulcans, her speech was somewhat dry, but tolerable.

"The planet is M-Class with an abundance of jungle-like forests along most the temperate zone -- coincidentally this region is also where the tachyon density is the highest. At this distance I can detect signs of humanoid life, though in an exceedingly primitive state. There appears to be large clusters of pre-industrial townships and cities within a 100 kilometer radius of the source of the tachyon emissions. I have also detected something that seems out of place: A powerful energy shield around the epicenter of the event. Until we reach orbit, I will not be able to gather any more data on the event itself. However reaching orbit may be problematic in and of itself. There seem to be temporal eddies around the world, I am surprised that we have yet to be caught up in them during our approach. But make no mistake, we will hit them and I cannot predict what effect they may have on Hartington or the crew."

"Captain, I may be able to provide an away team with some protection from temporal effects on the planet. I remember an incident involving the Enterprise crew under Captain Picard where they experienced a very similar temporal field. Their Chief Engineer managed to adapt their emergency transporter armbands to generate skintight subspace fields which protected them from the temporal effects. I think I can do the same with some help from Lt. Ghan.

Unfortunately, there isn't any way to scale the effect up to the whole ship. We just can't create a subspace discriminator that has a fine enough adjustment that can handle the amount of power required to shield the whole ship."

Croft turned to Calodan, "Any chance your shield modifications can be made on a runabout?"

"Unfortunately Mr. Croft, the power requirements are still too large. Anything much larger then a humanoid body is too much. There just hasn't been a subspace discriminator developed with the ability to make small enough adjustments that can handle the power load."

"I do not think I would want to risk a runabout moving about until we have more information on the eddies." Uvek interjected. "From a tactical standpoint, we need to hold fast, map the area out as precisely as possible, then proceed. Haste makes waste, and in this case may be fatal, or worse."

Qech listened to the suggestions as the debate continued, eventually inclining her head toward the Vulcan science officer.

"I must agree with Lt. Uvek that in the short term we'll need to deal with the temporal eddies before we can really tackle anything else. We can hammer out the specifics for the away team when we get to that point, but right now we just need to figure out how to get in orbit of the planet. Lt. Solana, is there any way that we can improve our sensor net to pick up on the eddies? Even if they're fluctuating, we may be able to navigate around them if we can crack down on their energy signature."

((OOC: Tom is very sick right now so he really can't post tonight. I don't know when he'll be back on his feet, but he sends his apologies. ))

The Doctor loked up from the padd on which he was taking avid notes.
"Lieutenant Solana, do you have any idea how primitive the life forms are on the planet as well? just out of curiosity. With the captain's permissions, i would like to monitor the crews health whilst this situation is underway. Me and Dr. Kiv have both had experiences with crews and high levels of any type of radiation or particle collection."

He noted this down, and then looked up again. "And apolagies from Dr. Kiv, she is snowed under, and unable to attend."
