The disruptor burst tore through Uvek's tunic as he dove for cover. The man at the other end of the hallway was firing on Uvek and approaching fast, aiming at the others. What a day!

It started well enough. Uvek had recently been promoted to Major, having returned from Cardassia Prime, where he was instrumental in setting up a meeting with Colonel Valan, as requested by his opposite in the Obsidian Order. This would prove to be the foundation for work in the Gamma Quadrant against the Dominion, a huge organization of systems throughout that region of space. An organization that, by the day, was proving to be more and more of a threat to the stability of the Alpha Quadrant. (Valan would perform the initial work and later be replaced by a more suitable combat vet).

His meeting with the Senate represenative went well, as did his report to the Order Commander, and now he was heading out to meet with his support team and release them. More importantly, he was looking forward to 30 days of leave. It would be his first in over two years. That's when he met Colonel Volok.

Ten minutes later he was fuming. The Gall! The nerve! Damn him! No leave, back to Cardassia for the forseeable future. What's someone have to do to get some peace? Kill the Founders himself? Fvadt! He stormed down the hallway, heading past administration personnel, not seeing the hands raised nor hearing the calls for his attention. It's too bad, too, because the calls were to alert him to a disheveled angry figure standing before the main hall doors, a disruptor gripped tightly in his hand.

"Death to the Senate!" The man cried, "Death to the Tal Shiar murderers and all who crush our dreams!" He opened fire. Uvek rolled against a pillar, realizing how lucky he had been. A large burn hole in his tunic was testamony to the setting of dissintegrate from the weapon. Another setting and the beam would have been wider, killing him outright. In fact, he could smell burning flesh from some poor victim nearby, as he pulled the melting material of his tunic off, realizing how delicate his situation was.

It was one of the Unifiers. The undergound movement had been growing for years, and only recently began open rebellions against the government. The Tal Shiar had their hands full all ready, and now these nuts were popping up all over Romulus, pushing for Vulcan/Romulan reunification. Great! Uvek survived some of the most dangerous missions to be offered by his order and now, on the eve of an apparent coming war, he was going to be shot by a religious fool who felt we needed no emotions. No emotions! Then what was driving this idiot?

No time to think about that. There was never time to think. As was customary, he carried no weapons in the Senate hall. He looked around to see what was available. The fool was firing again and he was causing considerable damage. Uvek could hear calls for help and the distant footfalls of security approaching. But he was here, now. Suddenly he noticed, across the hall from him, a decorative assembly of Teral'n, arranged in a fan configuration. He didn't think twice. Leaping to his feet and, waiting for the Unifier to change his direction and fire at a group in a nearby room, he lunged.

Uvek crossed the hallway in one leap, reached up and grabbed one of the ancient weapons. He turned, fluid and quick, and slung the Teral'n in the direction of the shooter. Though it wasn't actually a spear, the straight rod weapon flew through the air and struck the man right in the chest. He grunted, flew backward and hit the floor, the disruptor sliding down the hall. It was over.

Uvek walked slowly down the hall, noting the smoking pile of ash that was a Rihannsu citizen just moments before. He approached the weakly gasping figure before him, clutching the now green tinged shaft in his heart.

"Y..You cannot k...k..kill our dream," gasped the Unifier. He gurgled out a last breath and slumped back, dead. Uvek stood over him staring. Dream? Is that what this was all about? Just someone's happy dream?
