Forget Kirk vs. Picard, let's throw 'em all in the mix! Who was your favorite Captain? _________________

I cast my vote for Captain Benjamin Lafayette Sisko. I think that he was one of the most real characters in the whole franchise. I've said it before but I'll say it again, his transition from grieving widower and general all around wreck to war hero/religious icon (and later into a god, or the next best thing) was not only believable but gripping.
His relationship with his son is one of the most heartfelt of the franchise. Every time I see Captain Sisko hug Jake I can't help but think of my father. The same goes when I see Captain Sisko with his father. He is a believable father and son.
His relationship with his girlfriend and later wife Kasady Yates feels real for me. He is the only person I can think of (other than Riker) to have a nickname for his significant other. Not really a nickname I guess but he calls her baby, which is very endearing to me. He feels real and that's the best thing for a fictional character.
His morals are true, even when he knows he's done wrong. He is the perfect embodiment of not just a Starfleet Officer, but also a Human Being.
I'll round it out with a quote:
"So... I lied. I cheated. I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder. But the most damning thing of all... I think I can live with it. And if I had to do it all over again, I would. Garak was right about one thing, a guilty conscience is a small price to pay for the safety of the Alpha Quadrant. So I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it... Computer, erase that entire personal log." _________________

Ok Captain,
I buy your statements. However, I like Picard. I watched and have re-watched TNG through and through. Here was a ramrod stiff starfleet man who finds himself on the first galaxy class flagship in the fleet, surrounded not only by weaponry and speed, but CHILDREN, families, other concerns. The expansion into the Borg, the introduction of Q (talk about facing gods), this was the captain for me.
Kirk has many good points, but Picard pulls them out and adds to them. He COMMANDED respect, he broke down, he gave in to self-doubt (Reunion), he wanted revenge. (REMEMBER FIRST CONTACT):: NO, No! They enter our space and we fall back, they assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Well, no more, the line is drawn HERE, this far no further. AND I WILL MAKE THEM PAY FOR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE!
who can forget that?
Picard is the man for me. |

Picard IS the man. and Q was probably my favorite "villian" of any TV series ever. so smug and confident and mysterious. simply incredible. Even as a young kid there was something compelling about that character. |

I vote for Picard for the same reasons Uvek listed, but would also like to throw a nod in for Janeway and Archer.
Janeway had to face some seriously stiff odds and for most of her command, was out of touch with the higher ups. There were plenty of opportunities she could have gone against regulations and the morals put forth by Starfleet and the Federation, but she stuck to her guns.
Archer was dealing with the same sort of things as Janeway. He was pretty much all alone, dealing with unfavorable conditions back home (Damn Vulcans) and still managed to pull it out of the fire. Sure, most of his story lines and dialog were contrived..but he still had a feeling of "Captain" about him.
I love Kirk and grew to accept Sisko...but it has gotta be Picard. Can any of the others play the Ressikan flute? I think NOT! _________________

I had a hard time choosing between Sisko and Picard. I guess I just dig the bald ones. But in the end, I had to go with Sisko. Maybe it was because DS9 was the first Star Trek series I was really exposed to. It was the one that started it all for me. Picard has grown to take up a rather sizable place in my heart as well, but Sisko... Well, he's a baseball fan! My great-grandmother would roll over in her grave if she knew I wasn't giving points to the baseball guy. _________________
