|
|
Setting: After the Events of Amid the Mauve Sea
The Hartington NCO Mess was a small room set aside for the middle ranking and senior enlisted personnel below the rank of Chief Petty Officer to congregate. Crewmen and below and Chiefs and above had to request permission to enter the space and this was where NCOs would go to take a breather.
That was the secondary purpose of Karl Koester sitting in the mess over a beer tankard. The real reason was recognizing Petty Officer 3rd Class Ted Smith and other personnel in the security department for their actions during the recent events.
The more Koester read about what happened when the disease disabled him the more he thought various enlisted personnel deserved recognition. He sent a message to LT Uvek mentioning that he would be holding an event for off duty security enlisted personnel and including that he was welcome.
"I call this gathering of the USS Hartington NCO Mess to order!" Koester said and the crowd quieted.
"I wish to unofficially recognize various personnel in our department for their actions to this date. First on my list is Petty Officer Theodore Smith for filling in for the Master at Arms role after being my being disabled by the mystery virus." |

Uvek moves into the room. He heard Mr. Koester's pronouncement and blushed green at being tardy, but his presentation to Commander Qech took a bit longer than he expected. He saw Phell there, and Smith, standing to attention before Koester, who's russian accent cut straight through the small crowd of crewmen.
Uvek felt the pride of a father, watching his staff perform their duties. Even Phell, whose brief oversight resulted in no damage to the ship or crew. The situation over, Phell had completed the upgraded training he had been ordered to. Uvek moved quietly over and wordlessly shook his webbed hand. Then, he focused on the presentation and watched Smtih step forward to accept his much-deserved recognition. _________________

"Petty Officer Koester - I.." Ted didn't know what to say, but managed to find the words, "Karl, I just did my duty. Nothing special. Thank you though, for your recognition." Ted Saluted his superior NCO and briskly shook his hand. _________________

Uvek shook Ted's hand and smiled at him.
"Congratulations, Mr. Smith." He said warmly. "I confess a certain pride associated with serving with you. You have performed admirably since I have known you; no doubt you have a fine career ahead yet."
He spoke to Mr. Smith a few more moments before addressing Karl.
"Mr. Koester, I am pleased to see you recovered so well. From my security reports through Bishop and Mr. Smith, your survival was far from certain. You must have a strong consitution." He smiled. "I am pleased to see you return to duty, Karl. The ship is better off with your service." He cocked his head slightly, "I hope I am not intruding on your program. Please continue." _________________

(OOC: Sorry I've been remiss in posting - Army business kept me rather busy)
Koester said: "Not a problem sir. I understand business amongst officers can consume a good deal of time. That's why we as NCOs exist. And both Russians and Germans - both of which comprise my heritage - are known to be some of Earth's more sturdy races."
Koester continued: "And to celebrate everything this department's done since we went out into the great unknown of the Gamma Quadrant I've got a couple kegs straight from my paternal grandparents' brewery in Germany. Koester Brau complies with all Germany's standards for beer and then some. The first tankard will go to Petty Officer Smith." |

Uvek laughed watching Smith move forward to grab the ample container. There was enough beer in there for two men, but somehow Uvek didn't think that would slow Ted down. He stepped up next and gratefully accepted another tankard from the Petty Officer, and waved it in gratitude, slipping to the back of the group.
It was good and necessary to see this, he thought. Much needed after the losses they had endured from the time of their first encounter with the Cardassians. Uvek hoped there would not be many more like that. _________________

Petty Officer (Chief Petty Officer Selectee) Smith finished his mug, and wiped his brow. He wasn't sure if the Skipper had made mention to Koester about his transfer off the ship, but didn't want to rock the boat so to speak until the Skipper okayed it. _________________

"Well Ted. Since you're due to transfer off of here soon I figure I'd best give you a gift." Koester replied.
He took a small box from his seat and opened it. Inside was a knife.
"This is a ballistic knife - a favorite weapon in the 20th and 21st centuries by Russian Spetsnaz soldiers. Spetsnaz were among the most feared soldiers on the battlefields of Earth in those days and this weapon was a particularly lethal implement in their arsenal. Simply depress this button on the handle and you can send this projectile at 20 meters per second at a six meter distance. This modified weapon has a tritanium blade strong enough to puncture Jem'Hadar body armor."
He turned to Uvek: "With your permission sir I'd like to issue copies of this weapon to our security forces. Quite a few of the men would like having this option handy in close quarter combat." |

Smith took Karl's hand and shook it.
"Thanks Karl! I appreciate this. I'll keep it with pride." _________________
