Commander Gaer rolls his eyes and motions towards the archway.

"If you're finished smelling the flowers, Doctor, we should investigate the ruins. Kuplo, start scanning for any sort of power signatures, Doctor, I'd like you to begin searching for any biomass remotely large enough to qualify as the builders of this colony... even if you only find remains.

"Security, preliminary search of the area, secure the main buildings here and then we'll move inside. Surok, you're with me."

With that the Commander took out his own tricorder and began to scan the area, searching for any signs of technology that would still be functioning.

"Yes Commander," Roekil said with a nod. He appreciated the Tellarite XO's direct manner, it was professional.

"Ensign, you head around to the left, I'll take the right. Keep an open comm channel at all times, and remember the information I gave you in the transporter room." Roekil gave the Ensign a look that would have peeled the paint from the hull of a starship. This was his first away mission as Chief of Security and he wouldn't have anything on his record showing the ship's XO getting killed.

Mehv pulls out his own Tri-corder and moves off in the direction of the nearest power signature. The readout showed 2 weak signals that weren't too far away. There could be more, especially in this size settlement, but it wouldn't do to wander too far off alone, he told himself.

LT Surok looked around the empty square. The Sun warmed his skin, it had been a while since he had been planet side. Slowly, he did a three hundred and sixty degree scan with his Tricorder. Some of the flora and fauna looked worth further study. The courtyard its self looked like it hadnt seen signs of habitation in a good deal of time. The walls were made of sun dried bricks and were at odds with the bits a pieces of technology registering on his Tricorder.

"Aye Sir. The power signatures are coming from 100 meters ahead, Through that large door. Im picking up a great deal of powered down equipment all around us. The technology far exceeds the architecture. I am also not detecting any kind of power plant large enough to power a settlement of this size. Perhaps we will know more as we get closer to the power signatures."

Planets surface ruins
Ensign McKlaggen NPC

McKlaggen adjusted his grip on his phaser rifle and began moving to the left. Several doors lined the left side of the courtyard, all of them at least partially open. He checked them one at a time, with precision. He was doing his best to keep his eye on the XO as much as possible. The rooms were mostly empty, although one had some equipment that looked as though some kind of explosion had happened. He stopped at the arch, looking from the dark corridor, to the XO to the Security Chief and back again. Conflicting orders, crap what do I do now? He took a deep breath.

"Chief, all clear on the left."

Planets surface ruins
Chief Roekil

"Very good Ensign. Continue your survey, keeping within range of the XO." Roekil was moving through the ruins, surprisingly light on his feet for someone of his size. This planet had slightly lighter then normal gravity, and paired with his gravity compensators, he was feeling pretty good. So far, his sweep had revealed nothing aside from a few rodent like creatures that scurried away at the first notice of him. Every 20 meters or so, we would reach into his bag and drop a small disk to the ground.

He stopped and took a knee to check his tricorder. "Good," he thought to himself, "the portable sensor net is functioning. Nothing bigger then a mulkached rodent can back it past without me knowing about it".

Something was troubling him, and he couldn't quite put a finger on it. Then, while examining his impromptu defensive perimeter, he realized that these ruins didn't have any defenses of their own. He decided that that would be worthy of report and opened a comm channel to the rest of the members of the team. "Commander, it appears that these...ruins..lack any sort of defensive perimeters or systems. Whoever built this place was very foolish in their design."

Gaer had just finished his survey of the local area when Roekil called out to him.

"Commander, it appears that these...ruins..lack any sort of defensive perimeters or systems. Whoever built this place was very foolish in their design."

The Commander grunted and shook his head. Doesn't seem right... he thought as he moved towards the Security Chief. Why go to all the trouble and not defend it?

He looked at Chief Roekil.

"I'm a little baffled by this place myself. There aren't any life support systems anywhere, mostly just maintenance and science technology. I want to move into the ruins, get a look at what they're not defending."

Mehv walked into the building from which the power signatures were emanating and slammed his shin into a fallen beam. He had been so intent on his Tricorder he was not paying close enough attention to his whereabouts. This he noted to himself.

As he looked about the room, debris was strewn about the floor. Looking up, he saw the ceiling appeared to be on the verge of collapsing. Off to one side, Mehv's attention was drawn to a large object similar to a casket in size. A quick narrow beam scan confirmed that it was definitely emanating a faint energy signature.

"Commander, I have located one of the objects with a power signature."

Mehv carefully picked a path through the debris and approached the object. He noticed several areas that could be controls panels.

Planets surface
Ensign McKlaggen

McKlaggen came up behind Kuplo.

"Sir, you should have waited for me to clear the room." He glanced at the object, then moved to the door on the far side. He glanced back through the door they both entered through, he could just see the Commander, then he moved on to the next room.

ACTION

As Kuplo approaches the device, the energy readings begin to climb slowly, several of the control panels begin flashing strange symbols in a rhythmic fashion. Besides energy readings, the object appears impenetrable to the tricorder's scanner.

Surok watched as the power to the larger of the signatures intensified. He couldnt see the object but his scans showed it was roughly the size and shape of a photon torpedo casing. Surok could see the flicker and pulse of lights through the doorway. The rhythmic flashing drawing the eye to other details of the chamber.

"Mr. Kuplo, back away from the device. Slowly."

"Surok turned to the Commander. "Sir, not only are there no apparent defenses, there are no signs of living quarters. No life support. No eating or food preparation areas. Most of the corridors are full of maintenance equipment and im detecting the presence of a computer system running through out that far exceeds the apparent technology of the colony."
Surok turned on his flash light and pointed to a corner. "Of most concern, Sir, is that." Surok pointed to what looked very similar to a Borg Alcove. Before the Commander Gaer could respond, Surok said,"The technology is not Borg, nor has it received power for some time."

The Tellarite's eyes narrowed on the object as the Science Officer gave his report. At least it isn't Borg... he mused as he mulled over their options.

"Is there any way for our tricorders to interface with any of the technology, to perhaps access and information they may have on their nature?"

Surok took a moment before answering,"It may be possible Sir." He moved towards the arch, pushing debris out of the way, carefully. Surok first looked for an access, concentrating his scans on the arch itself.
"Sir, It may be prudent for Mr. Kuplo to see if he can decifer the symbols on the power source. I am," Surok arched an eyebrow and paused a moment," concerned with the behavior of the larger power source."

Seeing the device respond to his approach, Mehv stops in his tracks. This wasn't an expected response. Sure he had seen devices respond to the presence of an operator before, but he had also seen mines that respond to the presence of its target...

"I'm hesitant to move, Sir. As we don't know what this device is, it might be prudent to just stand still until we know more. Moving away may have a negative effect. While I'm not necessarily the best trained for language analysis, I'll give it a try as I don't recommend anyone else approach to do so."

Mehv starts using the tricorder to gather information about the symbols on the panels and enters the sequence of the flashing. He links the information with the runabout computer and requests a language analysis be done on the information.

"Commander, do we have any language specialists onboard to which we can send this data for their analysis?

Commander Gaer nodded his approval at the Ensign's decision.

"A prudent choice, Ensign. I believe I know just the person to bring down."

He tapped his combadge and called back up to the Guardian.

"Away Team to Guardian, we may need the services of Commander Locht. To ensure the safety of the team we'd like to transmit some language data we've collected for study rather than have him join us on the surface. Prepare to receive the information."

He looked back to Ensign Kuplo and Lieutenant Surok, nodding to give them the go ahead.

"Transmit whatever data you've collected on the device and the writing back up to the Guardian's computer when ready."
