Location: Bridge of USS Guardian
Reporting as: Ensign Daniels

Quote:
"Away Team to Guardian, we may need the services of Commander Locht. To ensure the safety of the team we'd like to transmit some language data we've collected for study rather than have him join us on the surface. Prepare to receive the information."

Daniels turned to report the transmission and opened the datalink directly to Ops. "Message from the away team, sir," he said to the Captain, data streaming to OPs. "They are requesting Commander Locht be allowed to review some language information immediately."

*****

"Receiving energy data," responded Commander Talbert. The data didn't make him feel good. "It appears a device is powering up in relation to Ensign Mehlva's proximity. No indication of what the device is doing, but power has definitely increased. I have set the language data aside to a science station." he reported, in anticipation of Locht's arrival on the bridge.

ACTION

The object emits an energy pulse, harmless but an obvious scan of the area. A transmission begins, hard to translate, but it becomes apparent that the object represents a species last attempt at survival from some unknown calamity.

Ensign Mehv quickly enters a command to record the transmission. Once complete he will send it along to the Guardian as additional information to help translate this language and interface.

USS Guardian Main Bridge
Captain Marek

Marek sat in the command chair, following the away teams progress. It was still an adjustment for him to be left behind on an away mission. He had been the XO of the Valley Forge for years, and was used to commanding away missions.
"Away Team to Guardian, we may need the services of Commander Locht. To ensure the safety of the team we'd like to transmit some language data we've collected for study rather than have him join us on the surface. Prepare to receive the information."

After Talbert's report, Marek tapped his combadge.

"Commander Locht to the bridge."

USS Guardian
Captain Marek

OOC I have PM'd Mr. Locht, haven't heard anything, if he comes back he can jump in.

Marek stood and walked over to the science station.

"Lieutenant Harper, start a preliminary translation of the transmission once it arrives. Mr. Locht will assist you when he arrives at the bridge."

On the surface, energy levels on the device stabilize, and on the control panels, rows of symbols begin scrolling across the screen.

Ensign McKlaggen began to double back, he had cleared this building, and he could no longer see anyone from the team. He was not going to let the Chief down his first away mission.

Daniels looks over to the Lt. "Sir," he begins. "If you will allow me access to the symbols, I might be able to write a deciphering program through the Universal Translator. Oftentimes, we can overlook the written capacity of the translator's base." He smiles sheepishly, "It was kinda my specialty. Just a suggestion, Sir."

USS Guardian Main Bridge
Captain Marek

Marek looked over at the Ensign, then nodded.

"Mr. Daniels, any assistance you can provide the Lieutenant will be appreciated." Marek returned to the command chair, punching a few commands on his console. Mr. Locht where are you?

Daniels nodded, "Yessir" he replied and swung back to his station.

He pulled up the source code for the UT and then activated a second screen, pulling the alien symbols up. He turned on the base translator program and began feeding the symbols through the 100,000 language database, while at the same time writing recognition software to tweek the existing symbol reference points. He smiled to himself, loving the challenge. Hopefully, it would lead to a new language reference point and he'd get to name it...maybe Daniels 251....hmmmmm.

The computer whirred and chirped. Finally, telemetry began to emerge into a recognizable pattern.

"Captain," reported Daniels, "I have a partial translation. The computer is chewing on the rest, but the language does not read well in standard."

He re-read his data. "The message is a repeating transmission asking for protection of...something, which is the last....something of the Alterran race. I'm sorry, sir, I cannot make more of it."

USS Guardian
Captain Marek

Marek rubbed his chin absentmindedly, then spoke,

"Ensign Daniels, please pass that on to the away team.

Daniels nodded. "Yessir," he replied. His fingers sent both the signal and the translation program to the away team's tricorders.

"Message sent, sir." He was feeling quite proud of himself. Despite the complexity of the signal, he had developed a program relatively quickly and the system was pushing through the rest of the signal, identifying and storing the unknown pieces. He patted his console. "Good girl," he whispered to it lovingly, "nicely done."

Planet Surfafce - Ruins

Mehv's PADD beeps as it receives a message from the Hartington. After a quick review, he looks up.

"Commander, the initial translation data of the message seems to indicate that the device is transmitting a message requesting 'protection of...something, which is the last....something of the Alterran race.' Assuming there is no subterfuge, which I feel is unlikely, we can probably relax a little as I believe the device doesn't intend us any harm. Permission to approach device."

OOC Feel free to continue, just wanted to move things along a little

ACTION

Several hours pass on the surface, the away team continues surveying the colony. They find several rooms with hundreds of the Borg like alcoves, arranged in rows back to back. They also find a room that looks like it could possibly have been a power plant, due to the amount of wiring and conduit that leads to it. The power system has been systematically removed, leaving little evidence of what kind of system it was. As the team searches, they begin to notice in their scans a variety of primitive life that has begun to inhabit the colony, although there are no sightings. A brief inspection of the ship shows it to be about the size of a runabout, with an advanced propulsion and shield system, but once again no offensive capabilities. It's power system is non-functional at this time.

Ensign McKlaggen

McKlaggen was trailing behind the Commander and the Doctor. They were walking down a narrow alley between two buildings, sunlight streaming from above. Dr. Uroki had been explaining in great detail all of the Tellarite diseases she had treated. She reminded McKlaggen of his ex-wife, he had a hard time tuning her out as well. He was just starting to slow down so he could get out of earshot when he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. He started to turn, but was struck from above by a yowling brown pile of fur. He was knocked off his feet, the phaser rifle in his hand discharging as he hit the ground. His last thought was how he was going to let the Chief down after all.

The creature was cat-like in appearance, it's coloring was brown like the adobe walls, but as soon as it attacked McKlaggen it's fur shifted colors to match his uniform. It was about 5 feet long from head to rear, plus another 2 or 3 foot of tail. It yowled again, then tensed to spring in the Commander and Doctor's direction.

Roekil had been walking about 10 paces behind and to the left of the group, dropping his sensor beacons every several meters as they toured the ruins. This place is really starting to bother me he thought as the team walked.

He was looking down, to place another sensor beacon as he heard the phaser discharge and the yowl of a large animal. His phaser rifle was up and to bear before Ensign McKlaggen had even hit the ground. The creature reminded him of a Capellan power-cat and he thumbed the power switch to kill. His first shot hit the creature mid leap and he was satisfied to watch it tumble end over end, harmlessly.

He ran to Ensign McKlaggen. "Doctor, he's bleeding."

Commander Gaer cries out in pain as the stray phaser blast strikes him square in the chest. He falls to the ground, his beady black eyes staring off into the void. It is clear by any with eyes that the Tellarite is dead.
