USS Guardian - Staff Room
Lt Mehvra-Kuplo
Mehv enters and finds a seat. He has a moment of split personality wondering if he is attending as the Chief Engineer or as the Second Officer. He decides that he'll have to approach any discussion from both points of view and offer up his suggestions accordingly. _________________

Marek looked around the room at his assembled senior staff, a feeling of pride creeping into his otherwise emotionless state. He continues to look around the room as he speaks.
"I have several announcements to make before we have our mission briefing. First, as you may have noticed, Mr. Dorin has chosen to stay with us, he will be functioning in a diplomatic capacity. I expect all of you to support him in his new position." Marek glanced at Lenara, then continued, "Lenara has requested to join the crew in an official capacity, Commander Talbert and I agree this would be beneficial to all parties. I am granting a provisional commission of Ensign to Lenara, with the understanding she is to receive orders and learn. Please assure the non-commissioned officers they will not have anything to worry about." He pauses for a moment, then picks up a PADD and taps a command, bringing the viewscreen to life. "Our next mission will be a survey of this nebula." He points to the screen, showing a large region of space covered in what looked to be equal to the Briar Patch back in the Alpha Quadrant. "You may notice that this region here is highlighted, according to the Alterran data module we recovered this was the location of an Alterran mining colony and shipyard. We hope to find something left of the colony. Lenara will work with Lt. Thomas and Lt. Kuplo to modify the shields and propulsion for the nebula." Marek glances around the room, "Any questions?" _________________

Talbert leaned in. "I would like to review some of the current modifications put into place by Lt. Kuplo, our new Second officer and Chief engineer. Particularly, how are those modifications going to protect us against the Tetryon radiation used by the Tal'harton. We are still in or near their space and without specific threats, we are going to need to stay alert this entire trip. What protections have we developed from our last encounters? I think Lt. Vanquax should weigh in on that as well." _________________

Mehv sits up a little straighter and addresses Cmdr Talbert's questions. "I have a possible solution that will increase our effectiveness against the Tetryon weapons. The key point for my theory is that tetryon beams are particles that normally occur only in subspace. I propose that we use the warp field generators to create a subspace bubble similar to that created when entering warp. This bubble of subspace distortion should effectively create a shield that acts similar to our normal shields but works more effectively for tetryon weapons."
Mehv pauses a second to let the room finish comprehending this, then he continues, "The challenge is in the power management. Ops/Tactical will need to pay special attention to the new shields and manage the plasma flow accordingly to compensate for the changing needs of the subspace shields, the normal shields, and the weapons. Our automated systems aren't designed to manage this additional power draw, so some of it will have to be done manually. We can create program to simplify this for the officer assigned, but it will still require manual input." _________________

Talbert nodded and looked to the captain. "If that is the case, and I'm sure it is, what about shunting non-essential systems to the shields, and keep from drawing too much off the warp engines and weapons? Additionally, we haven't considered the possibility of increasing our use of quantum torpedoes. We can preprogram a few to follow a tetryon radiation surge and zero into the Tal'harton ship." _________________

Marek nods to Kuplo, "Make it so, have Lt. Thomas and Lenara work with you on the program for ops." He looks at Talbert, and as he speaks to VanQuax, "I also think the Quantum Torpedo modifications have merit, Lt. I will leave that to you."
Lenara glances around the room, then speaks, "If I may make a suggestion, the nebula will greatly reduce sensor effectiveness. I would suggest using probes to increase sensor arrange, six arranged so that one each is off of each axis of the ship at 50,000 km or so should be effective."
Marek nods, "Agreed, unless there is anything else?" _________________

Mehv put on his "other hat" and tries to think as a second officer. A thought comes to him and he acts on it. "Sir, what else do we know about the nebula from the information we received? Are there any known space-faring races that inhabit it? Is it a known area in which the Tal'harton operate, or any other hostile cultures?" _________________

Marek glances at his PADD, then up at his Second Officer, "The Myosian's avoid the nebula, as their shields are unable to handle the mixture of gases, plasma, and radiation. The Alterran's had somewhat explored the nebula, but their information is incomplete, not to mention 200 years out of date. There are indications of possible life, and nearby sectors have reported Tal'Harton and Nekrali activity, but we will likely be seeing regions of space that have been heretofore unexplored." _________________

listening to the instructions as they are handed to her she tries not to let a look of panic cross her face and simply nods as each instruction hits her.
Quantum Torpedo Mods... right... and protection updates... okay she thought to herself as she was sure her posture went rigid with tension and her face a little lighter than normal...even for her.
For once glad that she couldn't find her voice, she took a deep breath and waited for the meeting to conclude. _________________

ACTION As the Guardian warps towards the nebula, her crew works on the modifications necessary to make the trip a safe one.
Lenara, Lt. Thomas, and Lt. Kuplo are at a console in Engineering, running the power transfer program through various simulations.
OOC VanQuax, I'll let you decide where you are at working on your mods, if you like, you can show up in engineering for some help if needed
Lenara typed in a few commands, then folded her arms as the computer chirped an error. "The program is functioning correctly, the response time is inadequate. The Tal'Harton are capable of firing multiple bursts that will overload the shields if we can not decrease response time."
USS Guardian
Bridge
Captain Marek
Marek sat in the command chair, studying a PADD. Normally he would allow Talbert to monitor the bridge at times like this, but the XO had come down with some kind of illness. As far as Marek could tell, it was the first time the officer had taken any sick leave, but Dr. Malen had assured Marek that a few days in sickbay he would be 'as good as new'. Marek glanced around the bridge for a moment, then turned back to his PADD. _________________

Mehv leaned in a little closer, his brow furrowed. They had worked on reducing the response time for the last hour and have made some significant improvements, but it just wasn't fast enough.
"We might have to go in a different direction than this. I'm not sure this will support the speed we need. Any suggestions?" He looks briefly at Lenara and Lt Thomas and then back to the readout on the display attempting to come up with a solution.

Thomas leaned back, stretching out her legs. "The problem seems to be with the delay of the computer reading sensor data, making it's calculations, then adjusting the plasma flow to compensate. Even with Lenara's response time it takes too long." She looked at Lenara, "Do you think you could handle everything manually?"
Lenara cocked her head to the side slightly, pausing for a moment, then responded, "There is a 93% probability of success with that approach, but that doesn't address the initial problem, allowing all Ops crew members to manage the system." She glanced at the console, then continued, "Lt. Kuplo, I believe that we may be able to design a predictive algorithm that would help increase response time. It would not help much initially, but as more data is collected it would adjust to Tal'Harton firing patterns." _________________

Taking a minute to consider their recommendations, Mehv stands up straight and looks around aimlessly. After a little while, "OK, start developing the predictive algorithm, but allow for a manual override so that we can respond appropriately while the algorithm is 'learning'. The subspace bubble will be able to withstand a few hits without any adjustments once it is raised, so there is benefit no matter what. I'm going to go update the captain on our progress."
Heading up to the bridge on the turbolift, he considers the sensitivity of the subject he will be discussing. A slight frown is on his face as he exits the lift. "Captain, may I have a word with you, privately?" _________________
