"Science concurs with Operations. It looks like the bio-mass was the first boarding team. They learn fast and adjusted their transporters to get the other boarding parties onboard mostly unharmed. Lt Uvek, warn your men that some of the boarders may already be injured. Maybe it would be best to get them secured before worrying about first aid. We might be able to set up a Triage in the brig?"

Uvek checked his board. Things were shaping up nicely. "Captain, Lt. Calodan, we seem to have a dozen boarders under wraps. Teams are escorting or carrying them to the brig as we speak.

He touched his comm panel. "Dr. Kiv, please report to the brig." He then turned to his men on the bridge. "Ensign Pavel your primary mission is the captain; under no circumstance is he to be left unprotected. Cadet Hikaru you will be first line of defense. I want you on the door, no matter what." They snapped to attention while their boss spoke, and then shifted positions. Pavel moved over to the ready room door, which offered him a clear line to the captain. Hikaru held at the door to the turbolift.

Uvek looked over to the ops station. "Mr. Calodan," he started, "I cannot lock onto that second vessel. However, the probe idea from before had merit. Despite the interference, I want to try something. Can you create a magnometric charge with one of our photon torpedoes? A low yield would disable the ship without destroying it. Launch it close enough to the atmosphere, and it should be able to lock onto the hull specifications and give us contact."

His board chirped again. "Captain we have collected the intruders, and secured them in the brig. They have been scanned for communications equipment, and all weapons. Dr. Kiv should be enroute to tend to their wounded. When it is safe, I am prepared to question them."

"I can do you one better Mr. Uvek. We still have two atmospheric probes in orbit. I can use them to provide a target lock for a photon torpedo launched in manual mode."

He made the modifications to the probes' orbits to to just outside the range that the last four had been destroyed.

"Tactical, lock the torpedo onto the these coordinates. I'll use the probes to guide it right into the ship."

"Done." Uvek punched the launch button and the torpedo flew from it's housing (he had reset the launcher during the programming phase).

"Torpedo tracking," he called out, hold that lock.."tracking." There was an explosion 12,000 meters from the ship, just inside the ionosphere. "Target impacted!" He called out "the ship has been hit, shields appear to be down, and the vessel is immobile. Captain, we can move to the coordinates and lock our tractor beam on."

He forwarded the impact site to the helm and turned. "Well done, Lt. Calodan, thank you."

Croft entered the coordinates to put the Hartington in tractor beam range, waiting for the Captain to confirm the order. this feels to easy he thought, there's gotta to be something we're missing

During the maneuver, Uvek trained the computer lock again on the Tal'harton vessel. He recalibrated the torpedoes and loaded quantums this time.

"Captain, hailing frequencies are open, we have weapons lock, and our shields are recalibrated and altering frequency at 100%. We await your orders." He double checked. All security teams checked in. Radiation levels were coming down to normal levels and deck 7 was cleared all ready. Things were seemingly coming together, but he felt uneasy. He rechecked his readings and made a command decision.

The Romulan trained a second set of phaser banks at the smaller craft. War or no, he was taking no chances with them. If this was a trap he'd at least punish this group, and teach these fvai a lesson!

Calodan was monitoring the progress of damage control teams in the effected sections. So far, everything was going well. Most of the damaged systems were already back online in some capacity and emergency bulkheads were operating.

He had also tuned the Hartington's most sensitive radiation sensors on both the small craft in the atmosphere and the ship above them in orbit. It was an alert from these sensors that drew him away from damage control.

"Sir, I can't be sure but I think the small craft is preparing another round of attacks. I'm detecting an increase in tetryon radiation. Its still below the levels detected when they teleported their away teams on board, but climbing steadily. If it continues at this rate, we could have intruders again in 2 minutes."

"Sir, permission to fire?" queried Uvek. He had a good lock and this time energy levels would be sufficient, he was sure. At this range there would be little left of the smaller support craft. A message every Romulan would be proud to send, he thought. But, this is not a Romulan ship, and I am not a Romulan officer anymore. I am a Romulan in Starfleet.

He hit the red alert audio switch and alarms blared through the ship. "Security stand to, stand by to contain possible intruders," called the Security chief through his comm. He double checked the containment fields around the ship's most sensitive locations.

Why are we not using the cloak? he wondered. He turned to the captain. "Sir, before you address these kllhes, I suggest we activate the cloaking device! We can use the same masking maneuver that Lt. Calodan used to get us out of the atmosphere, and we can zenith 10,000 meters and cloak. A quick trip aft should shake the Tal lovers up!"

Captain Brennon shook his head at the thought of destroying either of the hostile vessels. Only when we're out of options... but the Inquisitor don't know that. He turned back towards Tactical.

"Mr. Uvek, disable the smaller craft. Do NOT destroy it. I want it incapable of moving, transporting, shooting, everything... take out their life support if you have to just get it done. I'm thinking that if they start to run out of air we may start to get somewhere with these folks..."

He thought to himself for a moment, considering all options. He was about to order the Cloaking device activated when Uvek's voice rang out.

"Captain, we are being hailed."

"On screen, Mr. Uvek."

The scaly face of Inquisitor Voss reappeared, eyes narrowing in on the Human Captain.

"We have detected your support craft returning from the surface... call off your attack or we will have it destroyed!"

Captain Brennon shook his head, his sum look of satisfaction returning to his face. He's desperate... resorting to those kinds of threats when he knows we outgun them.

"I don't think that's how this is going to play out Inquisitor. We have our weapons trained on your support craft and I am prepared to disable her. Not to mention over a dozen of your soldiers are currently being detained in my brig after their failed boarding action. I am giving you this one chance to surrender... I will not be so kind as to offer it a second time. Prepare to receive your crewmen. Let us bring our people home and let's part company... no one has to die today."

Voss hissed, his serpentine tongue actually whipping out of his mouth for a moment, clearly trying to intimidate the Captain -- which didn't appear to be happening. Several tense seconds passed as the Inquisitor weighed his options. Finally he barked out an order in an alien language before cutting off the communication.

ACTION

At Tactical, Lieutenant Uvek received data from the Tal'harton vessel, transporter coordenates. All signs of hostility from the Tal'harton ships ceased. In short order the boarders were transported away. Minutes later the primary Tal'harton vessel started forward, apparently preparing to leave without a word. Suddenly blasts of energy rocketed forth from the ship, igniting the smaller support vessel in a massive conflagration. And then they were gone. Moments later, the Columbia breached the upper atmosphere.
