Uvek nodded. He mentally withdrew. His mind was racing through his past; faces and events unfolding with digital clarity. He pulled himself away from them, let them run on unhindered and concentrated on his defenses. Days away, the Tal'harton had said.

Admiral Dwyer had a favorite saying: "That changes the playing field." Uvek nodded. Yes, their aggressive approach shifting to this soft, almost friendly reality certainly changes the playing field.

"In the clutches of the enemy and you still mistrust me, Lieutenant? Just because our cell is pleasant doesn't make it any less of a prison."

Rolen shook his head and took a seat across from Qech. For the second time in their presence, the Ambassador's smile had vanished.

ACTION

Several hours pass before the Tal'Harton come to check up on the group. By this point, Rolen was, to all appearances, asleep on one of the plush couches of the common room. Inquisitor Voss entered the room flanked by two large guards who looked more like Komodo Dragons than snakes. Their "host" bowed by way of a greeting and looked towards the Vorta.

"I'm glad to see that at least some of you are appreciating the accommodations. I'd like to spend the intervening time until our arrival at the station getting to know you all a little better..."

His slitted eyes fall first on Commander Qech, then to Doctor Newell, Lieutenant Uvek and the sleeping form of Rolen before returning to Qech. A smile crossed the Inquisitor's face, his tongue lashing outward for a moment before he spoke again.

"Any volunteers?"

Qech stood up, anticipating the worst.

"I'll go."

Uvek stood. He had to protect Commander Qech, and this was what he wanted. His aggression level had risen dangerously, and he was on the verge of "figeting". He was aware of what was happening, even hyper-clear on his mission, yet pieces of him felt disconnected and unreal.

"I will cooperate." He replied. "You have no reason to affect my companions. I am interested in the Tal. Moreover, I wish to know as much about you and your faith as you would share."

He stepped forward. "Take me."

Voss's hood bristled at the Romulan's statement. He stepped forward and looked over the "volunteer", tongue lashing in and out of his mouth as if sensing about for... something. After a moment he shook his head and moved to Qech.

"No, we'll take the female. Don't worry though, we'll be speaking very soon."

At that the larger creatures stepped forward and flanked the Commander, not touching her or threatening her in any way other than their mere presence.

"Come along."

Qech moved forward, stopping only long enough to look back at Uvek. She mouthed the words: "Don't worry" before joining in step with the soldiers flanking her. Or rather, she could only assume they were soldiers by the way they moved. Once they were clear of the cell (silk sheets or not, it was a cell) she spoke to the leader in front of her, keeping her voice level and calm. "Where are you taking me?"

For a split second Uvek considered lashing out, attacking these creatures. He certainly had the energy for it! But, no. He could not endanger Commander Qech's child in this small room. He pulled himself back and sat down, closing his eyes and ignoring the Tal'harton all together; preparing for what may come. Rolen and Dr. Newell did not exist. Small red lights on the cortical sensor began rapidly blinking.

Voss looked to the Commander as he stopped in front of a door. It slid to the side and he motioned for her to step inside.

"We're simply going to be stepping in here to have a talk. I'd like to get to know you a little better."

***

Back in the cell, Rolen's eyes peered open as he sat up, taking in the scene. He saw Uvek sitting across the room and watched as the Lieutenant sat in silence. After a few minutes he turned to the Doctor to gauge his reaction to the crisis at hand.

Qech peered at the door as it opened, and looked to the inquisitor before slowly stepping over the threshold.

Just want to talk? Somehow I doubt that.

The room was far from extravagant, in fact their current "quarters" seemed quite decadent in comparison. It was a simple table, and a few chairs; one into which she was instructed to sit. The lighting was unpleasant, but she expected nothing less from an interrogation room, which is what this clearly was.

Though I'm sure they'd dance around ever using that word, from what I've seen so far.

She sat down, as directed, and casually looked around before focusing on the leader, Voss. "You've said you wouldn't harm my crew. Do I have your word on that?"

Not that I'd believe your word.

The snake-like being nodded, dismissing the guards with a wave of his hand.

"Of course. Why don't we start with something simple... your name please and where are you from. It's very clear that you're not from this region of space..."

Qech looked forward, not even bothering to blink. She wasn't going to make this easy on them. She'd answer their questions, but she wasn't going to bend over backwards with the details.

"Qech. Whether that's my first name or my last name is up to you. And no, I'm not from this region of space. Alpha quadrant, to be precise."

though I'd hardly call 'somewhere in one-quarter of the galaxy' precise.

"So you've either traveled a VERY long distance in a small craft or you're from the other side of the anomaly... based upon your course heading when we found you I'd say it is the latter of the two. Very well, Qech tell me more about your people..."

ACTION

For over an hour she is questioned, simply questioned. While her Starfleet training is strong and she resists their annoying line of questions well enough it seems clear that these creatures are more interested in learning about where the Pike and her crew had come from rather than the insidious act of religious conversion -- at least at the moment. Finally, Voss rose from his chair and the door opened.

"Very well Qech, you're free to return to your quarters... we'll be along shortly to speak with one of your other companions, perhaps the one that seemed so eager to talk with us, or maybe the bland looking alien. I plan on saving the Vorta until much later. Do you have an opinion on which one I should speak with next?"

"Do you have an opinion on which one I should speak with next?"

Qech shook her head, looking the reptilian inquisitor in the eye. "Not without appearing to have some sort of agenda. No. I'll let them decide."

He nods and leads her back to the cell.

"Very well, we'll allow your companions to decide..."

Once back in their communal room, Voss looks to the two remaining people (ignoring Rolen as he wanted to "talk" with him later).

"Your friend here has offered you the chance to choose amongst yourselves which of you is to speak with us next. Any volunteers?"

The Romulan appeared completely unaware that anyone had reentered the room. He sat silent, still, and distant, his legs crossed, his eyes closed. Wherever it was, he did not appear to be on the Tal'harton ship at all.
