Rolen lifted an eyebrow in an almost Vulcan manner and looked to Qech.

"I fear you're correct, Commander. Blessed little would keep them from their prey, and I think that Inquisitor Voss has a definite desire to speak with Lieutenant Uvek. I have to wonder what is going on here."

***

An hour passed before the Tal'Harton returned. This time the guards were led not by Voss but by a much smaller, almost sickly looking creature. He did not have the regal hood that encircled Voss' head, however a slight rattling sound followed him as he walked. His slitted eyes passed over Qech and the others before he waved a clawed hand by way of a command.

"You will follow us. We have arrived."

Qech looked to the others, and then to Uvek, finally going over to him and placing a firm hand on his shoulder. "Lieutenant... Snap out of it. We need to go."

She looked back to the emaciated serpent, hoping the urgency in her voice hadn't been taken as fear. He looked like someone who might enjoy such a thought. But she was determined not to give them the satisfaction. Fear would have to wait.

Uvek stood. His face was blank. He seemed himself, but was without emotion, without concept.

Quote:
"Lieutenant... Snap out of it. We need to go."

There was no speech. He saw his companions, he saw everything; colors, lights, fabric...everything was fascinating and new and sharp. Yes, especially sharp. This was what he wanted, but more than he expected. He took it all in, to the chagrin of his companions (they had to occasionally pull him from the walls, tables, doors and lights).

Uvek was gone. He was a tool, a recording device, a sponge. When the time came, he would be called on to recall this information. But somehow, deep within himself he knew that when the time came, without help, without the doctor, he knew the wall would grow and whatever happened, would become Uvek Suran.

The doctor felt cold, extremely cold, and alone. His mid was slightly changed by the meeting, but how?

Qech looked back and forth to her colleagues as they followed the creature to wherever it was he was taking them. Uvek was completely out of it, and the Doctor looked as though he was suffering from shell-shock. As ironic as it was, she found herself thinking that the only person that she had left was Ambassador Rolen. The other two had been whittled away, either by his own doing or for some still mysterious reason. If they were going to survive this, it seemed that she was going to have to rely on the Vorta a lot more than she was previously willing.

ACTION

The crew is led through the corridors of the ship which seem to twist and turn endlessly. Had they the chance to escape their guards it was doubtful that they would even be able to return to their cell let alone find their way to the Pike. They were led towards a line of aliens moving out a large door, opening up onto a sunny world with warm air blowing in from the hatch. As the line progressed forward, each alien (as well as the crew from the shuttle) are provided a bracelet with what appeared to be a tracking device and a number stamped onto it. Should they refuse to put it on they are forced by the rather large guards. The line then moves forward again, out of the ship and into the sun. Their overseers heard them into a row of low buildings built from wood and tar -- a far cry from the luxurious room they had spent the past few hours. In side are several beds, most filled with various aliens that the Starfleet crew had never seen before. As they look around, one of the overseers calls out to them.

"Newcomers, get yourselves settled. You'll be meeting with his eminence the [translator malfunction] shortly. You must be prepared for this holy experience."

With that he turns and walks out.

One of the aliens, a lanky looking fellow with wiry gold hair and greyish limbs steps up to the Starfleet crew, hand held out to the group in general.

"You'll want to follow me, before the last of the beds are taken."

Uvek followed his companions, his gaze focused on Qech. He knew her, somehow, but knowing how was difficult to determine. He was here, in this gold and grey uniform for a reason. There were so many sights and sounds. So much was happening around him and it was so fascinating. Symbols and images and faces imprinted themselves on his mind like laying silly putty on paper. He struggled to focus. He was here for a reason. A reason......

'Perhaps these people are my friends' Thought the doctor, as he followed the frail alien to the nearest bed.
They had been given fruit, had not been harmed, and his conversation with their leader had somehow made him feel reassured.
He couldn't remember the actual conversation, but it must have been interesting.

Uvek sat next to Commander Qech. He stared intently at her for long minutes. The alien leading them seemed out of place, all this seemed out of place. But it was the woman, the spots, the uniform that fixated him. He knew her! He just knew that somehow she was important to him. Why was he here? What was he supposed to do? He tried to speak, the words floating from somewhere else...

"I know you." he said, his voice quiet and distant. "Why do I know you?"

Qech shook the peculiar alien's hand when it was offered to her and quietly followed him through the chamber, periodically glancing over her shoulder as an act of caution. She seated herself on one of the beds, taking note of how incredibly uncomfortable it was.

So this is the real experience, she thought. I'm glad I had the fruit when I did.

She fidgeted with the bracelet around her wrist, which was already beginning to chafe, and lost herself in her thoughts for a moment; the reality of finding herself in a prison camp slowly sinking in. And her comrades, who had been so focused before all of this... seemed completely lost to her now. Even the Doctor was behaving strangely.

What did they do to him?

As if on que, she heard Uvek speak:

"I know you... Why do I know you?"

Qech looked to him remorsefully. Was he truly that far gone? His pronouncement only worsened her fears.

"Lieutenant Uvek..." She gestured to herself. "Lieutenant Commander Qech, remember? First Officer of the Hartington. You do remember the Hartington, don't you? And please tell me you still know who you are."

Uvek nodded, but it meant nothing. YES! He screamed in his mind, I know who I am! But, he didn't. He looked at the Qech lady.

Hartington, Lt. Uvek, Qech......he shook his head.

"Why are we here? What do they want?" he asked. "I do not understand." he said simply. He looked around, his Romulan ears hearing a thousand sounds, his eyes taking in a thousand sights.

Yet, inside, deep within this cave of his mind, was a thought; like a psychic anchor he had left for himself, and he grabbed it like a life-line.

The Hartington.....it was all about the Hartington....

Qech put both hands on Uvek's shoulders, and turned him to look her in the eye as she spoke. "Uvek, it's important that you remember. We, that is you, the Doctor and I, are Starfleet Officers aboard the USS Hartington. This place here..." She gestured to the narrow building around them "is what the Tal'Harton are calling a 'Re-education camp'. We've been taken by them. We're captives, and this is nothing less than a prison camp. You have to remember, Uvek. Think."

uvek stared hard at the 'commander'. His mind was flashing, images conflicted with thoughts. Moments, long moments went by....Tal Shiar....there was a bomb blast....Tal'harton but not the Tal'shiar.....The Commander....a mission.....the re-education....education.....learning....LEARNING!

A look flashed through his eyes.....he looked at the commander again and nodded. "Yes," he replied warily. "Yes, yes we are here to learn. To learn for the Hartington. I must learn for the ship and bring you back safely so that we can know more."

He was in a weird twilight world. Now there was fear. Fear that the wall would collapse and all his preparation would be for naught. When would they come? When would he have the chance? He turned to the doctor and smiled. "We must learn for the ship".

Rolen looked around the barracks and shivered as he took a seat next to Qech. The Vorta actually seemed to be frightened by their surroundings. His eyes fell onto the Doctor for several moments, as though he was searching for something in the Human's eyes or body language. After a moment he turned his gaze to Lieutenant Uvek and quickly came to a conclusion. Turning to Qech he said without a sense of jest in his voice.

"We Vorta are equipped with a termination implant. We are supposed to use it in the event of capture to keep our secrets out of enemy hands. I've given it a lot of thought, Commander and I do not relish the idea of dying... but I like the thought of being tortured by those creatures much less. I find myself at an crossing in my life. Do you have any suggestions?"

As Rolen spoke to Qech, another Alien approached the Doctor with a bowl of some sort of soup, offering to the Human. It was a meter and a half tall with an elongated head and only three digits on each hand. It smiled an odd looking grin as it offered over the bowl towards the Doctor. Inside the Human's mind he could hear a voice, knowing without a doubt that the creature before him was speaking.

You should eat, keep your strength up. You're going to be going through quite an ordeal

Qech looked at the Vorta, almost incredulously. She'd heard about the Vorta's 'plan B' implant, but she'd never considered it until now. The idea of killing oneself to avoid the unknown simply did not appeal to the former CMO. But still, it was a difficult question to answer. surprise gave way to a sense of understanding. She understood his fear, even if she would not have considered his dire second option for herself.

"Well, since I came fully-loaded with self-preservation I can tell you that living through something like this truly does make you stronger. You may be worried about giving up Dominion secrets to these beings, but think about this... If every Vorta they get their hands on manages to drop dead before they're even able to question them, they are just going to draw the conclusion that your species, and therefore the ones responsible for you, are fragile and easily-broken. Secrets are nothing compared with giving the enemy the incentive to charge forward and take what they can from you. You may not be doing your kind a favor."

She looked across at the Doctor, watching as another alien offered him a bowl of soup. "Plus... This team needs you. Like it or not, you've become the asset you wanted to be."
