Rolen took a moment to think about Qech's words. He smiled as he looked up to her.
"Thank you, Commander. I hadn't thought about it that way. I think I'll stave off my demise -- at least for the time being." _________________

The doctor sat, eating this soup, wondering what it would be like to fly. |

As the quartet sat, awaiting whatever fate would come, they soon learned that they wouldn't need to sit alone very long. Less than a quarter hour passed before two pairs of large and imposing guards stormed into the barracks, making their way straight towards the team. They stopped and looked down to each of the prisoners, their serpentine eyes full of menace. One of the aliens hissed out a command.
"Stand and follow."
As the Starfleeters reluctantly stood, Rolen whispered as best as he could to Qech.
"Are you so sure of your answer now, Commander?"
Before she had the chance to answer the group was forced apart, each heading in different directions.
***
A bright yellow sun beat down from it's apex as Lieutenant Uvek was led across the camp's courtyard. The most predominant thought that crossed the Romulan's mind was "it's hot". Relief was only temporary as he was pushed from the striking heat into a nearby building. In the moments of disorienting blindness that followed as his eyes adjusted, Uvek was forced down into a chair, his arms strapped behind his back.
As his vision returned to him he could see a dark room, the several forms standing around him huddled together. From the reptilian mass hissing noises echoed forth, assaulting the man's ears. But it wasn't the sound of hissing that struck fear into his heart, that honor was distinguished by the rattling sound eerily similar to that of a Vulcan Rattle Viper. Memories of a long ago under cover mission to the world of Uvek's ancestors came flooding back, as did the sting of failure accompanied by them.
***
The Doctor was led up the camp's inner roadway, leading towards a large manor. His guard didn't harm him as he stumbled, bewildered in the heat. When the human stumbled, the scaly hand reached out to steady him. It was quite pleasant actually.
Into the house he was brought and into a grand meeting room. There he was asked to wait until called upon and left alone. No guards, no restraints. Nothing.
***
Commander Qech was led into another low building near the main barracks. Quickly she recognized the building for what it truly was. A medical ward. Unlike the other buildings of the camp this building was temperature controlled. Inside the exam room stood a trio of Tal'Harton, each wearing what appeared to be medical smocks, masks over their faces and gloves over clawed hands. One of them motioned for her to sit on the exam table.
"Take a seat, Ms. Qech, we just want to have a look at you before you are released into the general population. We don't want you infecting the other guests, now do we?"
From deeper within the medical facility the sound of a man's screaming could be heard. It was far off but clearly a howl of pain. One of the trio broke off from the group and made its way towards the sound. _________________

Qech looked to the table, and to the Tal'Harton in the medical smock. The haunting cries of pain echoed down the halls as she struggled with her now over-active imagination. She approached the table very slowly, allowing herself a quick look around the facility. It was clean, at least. But the instruments looked less-than-current, at least by Starfleet's standards. Many of the foreign devices were tools she had never seen before. That alone made her nervous. She attempted a calm, reasoning tone as she stopped just short of the table.
"I don't have any diseases with which to infect anyone. Don't trouble yourself." She stared at the man before her, who she could only assume was a doctor; her expression steely and almost challenging. She knew that, in the end, she would have no choice but to lay down on the table. But her pride had to show its noble hand first. Regret would, as it always does, come later. _________________

After a moment the cries came to an abrupt halt, lending more to Qech's creative imagination. The Doctor took a step towards her, offering out a gloved hand.
"I understand your reservations perfectly well, but I have to inspect you myself. I'm sure you understand. I give you my word as a physician that I will not injure you. This is just going to be a standard medical examination." _________________

Qech stood there for a moment. Just stood there, staring at the hand that was offered her. Without a word, she pushed the hand away (though not forcefully) and got up onto the table. She locked eyes with him for a moment, her expression still quite stern.
"I'm going to hold you to that, Sir." _________________

The Commander could see the reptile's scales pull back into an almost gentle smile beneath the mask.
"I would expect nothing else."
He spoke in their language, clearly asking for tools as he began his examination. He ran what appeared to be a medical scanner over the length of Qech's body, paying special attention to her midsection as he did. Hiss-like words passed between the two remaining doctors as the test continued. About five minutes into the procedure he placed a hypo against her arm.
"I'm simply drawing a vial of blood for examination, it shouldn't hurt."
Nearly true, the hypo stung slightly as the life giving fluid was pulled from her body. He handed the vial off and then proceeded to physically examine her, starting with the glands in her mouth and neck. _________________

To say that she was uncomfortable would be an understatement. In fact, Qech came very close to jumping off the table and making a break for it the moment they attempted to draw blood. Blood was the genetic blueprint of all things; and she certainly had no love of the idea of handing her 'blueprints' over to her captors; no matter how standard the medical procedure was. But she knew that running would not get her far, and in fact it would more likely get her killed. She couldn't responsibly allow that. Her crew needed her. She was responsible for them. Not to mention the fact that, between herself, the baby, and the symbiont, her death would be threefold.
She tried to remain as calm as possible, but she knew what the medical scans would reveal. And she could only wonder what that would mean for her and her two 'passengers.'
"It's like I said" she said finally. "No diseases... Can I go now?" _________________

A memory of something unsettling crawled through Uvek's mind. But for the life of him he could not fathom what it meant. He looked from one face to the other. The separation he had made in his mind had reached a place that would be dangerous if he could not get medical attention to help him reverse it.
He looked to his guards. "I do not understand what I am here to learn." He said. "I am not entirely sure I appreciate your intentions." It was the best he could manage. He still had no idea what brought this situation about, but he was sure it had all to do with the Hartington; that was where he settled his mind. Whatever was happening, he needed to see the Hartington again, and remember. _________________

"No." The Tal'Harton doctor said very frankly. Once his physical examination was completed (a very uncomfortable scenario) he started in on another round of scans, this time focusing solely on her midsection. After a moment he looked back up to her.
"You have something living inside of you, were you aware of this?" _________________

"You have something living inside of you, were you aware of this?"
Qech tried not to look amused, but the statement was so innocent, and ignorant that she couldn't help herself. Which something? She thought.
She looked at him and stated plainly: "I'm pregnant." _________________

Just as bluntly the Doctor responded.
"Well of course, that much is clear, but I am referring to the other parasitic lifeform that seems to have embedded itself in your abdomen. What I find strange though is that you seem to have some sort of pouch specifically meant to hold the creature... that would suggest something much more than a parasitic relationship. Did you willingly put this in your body, Ms. Qech?"
The Doctor seemed genuinely curious as he questioned the Commander, continuously running scans on the Trill and her Symbiont as he spoke. _________________

Qech took a deep breath as she thought about her answer. Lying, clearly, wasn't going to work. The evidence that the symbiont was meant to be there would instantly overwhelm anything she could make up. A rush of stubborn pride flowed through her the moment she considered answering his question in any detail. She would give them the truth, but it wasn't going to be laced with juicy details, that was for damn sure.
"I did, yes." The challenge returned to her eyes again as she regarded her captor. She may not have been in irons, but she saw this man more as her opponent than her medical practitioner. She figured she owed these feelings to the extremely unrelenting nature of Evijan Qech. His stubbornness might be the death of her, but he was unyielding at the moment. "Don't be concerned, I knew it was there... Now, may I go?" _________________
