"An interesting hypothesis Uvek."
The doctor was glad for something other than Rolen to occupy him.
Unless the device we hit was a graviton mine, in which case the cloak would have prevented the spread of the tetryon particles."
Oliver looked at the panel beside him, using it to enter a mission log back on board the Hartington.
A few minutes later, he turned back to Uvek and spoke.
"But then again Uvek, you of all people should know im just a doctor, not an engineer, or a superhero for that matter."

Qech nodded. "It would definitely broaden our search at the very least. And of course Dr. Newell may also be right. Unfortunately we left the realm of the familiar back in the Alpha quadrant." She noted that the doctor had sent the information, and continued. "There are many possibilities as to what it could have been. But the more ideas we have, the better our search. So, keep 'em coming, Gentlemen." She smiled.

"I'm preparing to go to warp. Laying out a course for the wormhole."

ACTION

The Pike jumps to warp speed, rushing off towards the wormhole. Several hours pass uneventfully, not even the Guardian returning their message. All seems to be going normally, with the exception of the Guardian's silence.

Suddenly, sensors detect a large vessel moving in at low warp towards the Pike's position. The sensors are not familiar with the design, though it bears a striking resemblance to the Tal'Harton scout ship...

Qech looked at her console, swearing inwardly. Great. She looked to Uvek.

"I'm picking up an incoming ship of some kind. Looks not unlike the information that was gathered on the Tal'Harton ships. I'm going to err on the side of caution. Plotting an alternate course for the wormhole... This will tag some time onto our trip, but I'm not taking any chances."

I hope they haven't already seen us.

"Lt. Uvek, send a Transmission back to the Hartington. Give them the current location and the specs on that incoming ship. If they're headed that way I don't want them to be surprised."

She looked to Rolen.

"Ambassador, does this ship design look at all familiar to you?"

"Understood, Commander." Uvek moved his fingers over the console and sent a high priority message flying back to the Hartington.

"I've also switched our sensors to purely passive. That should make it harder to find us. Assuming, of course, that they haven't all ready detected us."

He kept his eyes locked on the sensor data streaming in, and resisting the urge to pray to the Elements for success. As it turned out after 20 years of not doing it, that didn't seem particularly effective anyway.

Rolen took a few moments to look over the design of the craft nearing them. The thin line of his mouth creased against his face as he looked over to Commander Qech.

"I'm afraid it does match descriptions of known Tal'Harton vessels encountered by the Dominion. I believe it may be one of their cruisers... I don't think this shuttle would stand up very long against them, no offense to Mr. Uvek's tactical abilities intended of course."

ACTION

Several minutes pass without a change in the larger vessel's trajectory and for a moment it appeared as though they had evaded them for the time being. Suddenly, without warning the vessel altered its course to intercept the Pike as well as increased its speed to over take the shuttle.

Qech looked at her console, fearing the worst. "Mr. Uvek, I think we have company. Doctor, you may want to hold on to something back there!" Her fingers danced across the console as the shuttlecraft drastically changed course. "I'm going to try and lose them. Altering course, and going to warp 5. Unfortunately that's the fastest this bird can go."

She took a deep breath, but remained a steely calm on the outside.

This craft won't stand a chance against them. They've seen us. And there's no way we can out run them.

"Mr. Uvek, is there any way we can reduce our energy signature further?... Ambassador, please sit down."

The fidgeting Vorta sighed and took his seat near the rear of the cabin.

Uvek shook his head. "Unfortunately, I am not an engineer. While it may be possible to create sensor ghosts, or reduce our electronic signature, I believe that these efforts will be ineffective in light of the Tal'harton's size and speed. In the past I have counted on having a rendezvous or a cloak. Furthermore, reducing our signature at this point would be meangingless; they obviously know we are here. When faced with a bevy of impossible options, choose the one that allows you to live and fight another day."

He thumbed his control panel. "I am transmitting an emergency frequency, and launching a beacon toward the wormhole, in the event we are boarded."

He looked at the Commander, then at Rolen. "Unless the Ambassador has a means of helping us further, I suggest we prepare for the likelyhood that we are about to meet the Tal'harton personally."

"Unfortunately, Commander, Lieutenant, I have no means of helping us any further... I am not in any rush to meet with them however, they do NOT like the Dominion very much. I can say that the feeling is mutual though."

Qech pushed the little shuttlecraft as fast and as far as it would go. "Our options maybe be impossible, Mr. Uvek, but that does not mean we shouldn't try. I'm sending a message back to the Hartington. There may be nothing they can do, but at least if more help does arrive they'll know our last position. In the meantime... arm yourselves. They seem more than a little interested in us at this point."

At least we're leading them away from the Hartington. That's some comfort.

Uvek watched the ship approaching faster now, closing the distance between them. He turned to the Commander. "I recommend we hail them. A posture of strength may help determine their intent."

He paused, but knew this was no time to mince words. "In addition, I disagree with arming ourselves at all. We clearly are no match for that vessel and weapons may cause our demise more quickly than is necessary. However, once on board their ship, it may be possible to use the shuttle as a weapon. With your permission, I will open a channel, then get to work setting things in motion."

Qech finished raising shields and powering the weapons as she spoke. "Maintain current course, Lieutenant. Before we attempt any diplomacy I want to get this ship as close to the wormhole as possible. We have more to consider than just our lives here, I'm afraid. The further we get from the Hartington, the better. They may ask for information about us, and I don't want them to learn, through whatever means they may have, that the Hartington is a dead stick just a few light years behind us. When they overtake us, we will make contact then. And I agree we should probably go quietly. But for now... Well, I hate to say it like this, but we're bait. Our duty is, first and foremost, to the Hartington. We need to buy them some time."

She sighed. "I just hope it's enough."

Uvek kept his thoughts to himself but the Ambassador's words rang in his mind. A plan began to formulate. He turned to the XO, Ambassador and doctor. "Commander, Davynn, I agree with you on your concerns. But right now my concern is this team's safety, and especially your baby's." he started, leaning in and speaking in a surprisingly soft voice, concern evident in his features.

"I have spent a lifetime deceiving powerful forces and surviving. I have studied aliens for many years. There is an opportunity here. One that Ambassador Rolen could play a significant role in. When the time comes, please allow me to speak to the Tal'harton, and support my posture no matter what it is. It will be dangerous, but I need you to trust me."

Qech's face was stern, and her body language backed it up. "Lieutenant, I think you are forgetting who the ranking officer is on this ship." She looked him in the eye, a note of warning in her voice. "You say you have spent a lifetime surviving, well I'm on my sixth. Patience is a virtue."

She turned back to the controls. "We were sent on this mission to find aid for the Hartington. And if by leading danger away we accomplish that, then so be it. We need to be Strong, and hope rescue will come. We all knew what we were getting into when we put on a Starfleet uniform. My orders stand."
