Leaving the room with the Ensign by her side, she felt frustrated. Knowing that she'd been injured, she should have reported to sick bay, but understanding that she was not an emergency case, she had decided against it. Now it was costing her. She smiled at the being walking along side her.

"I appreciate the escort Ensign, perhaps this time I will make it to sick bay and not convince myself that I am not in need of a visit."

Even as she spoke the words she knew how foolish they sounded. As they neared the turbo lift, she felt dizzyness settle on her again, and this time it didn't seem to be leaving. she slowed her step, but was determined to make it on her own two feet.... she'd been through worse, and she'd make it through this.

(OOC: I'm going to action scene this along, if you want to discuss what happens in the meantime, by all means play it out [i.e. pilots getting ready, security clearing the lower decks, diplomatic officer's sickbay time, etc])

ACTION

The Hartington began its long trek over the void of space, striking out for the safety of their new friends. Tensions were high as the ship inched along, trying to cover the distance in as little time as necessary without presenting too much of a target for their enemies.

The voyage itself took a little more than two days, pilots in the shuttles and runabout pulled double shifts to keep their home safe. Luckily, it appeared that as the voyage drew to a close their skills would not be necessary, for no raiders had yet attacked the ship.

The Bridge was quiet as the crew performed their duties. It took all they had to keep the old vessel from flying apart. Captain Brennon sat in the Command Chair, keeping a close eye on his his people all around him. For the Captain, this experience brought back painful memories of the recent war. Sitting in this very chair, in a situation nearly identical... he shuttered as his mind took him back in time. Far too many memories of those years were like that. Luckily for David Brennon, he wouldn't have to think about them for long.

Chief Brin's sensor station lit up as he detected a low yield warp signature on an intercept course... their Pirates had decided to return.

USS Hartington Bridge

Chief Brin Vek

Brin had been picking up some of the slack as so many crew were on different assignments and Ops was overtaxed with monitoring the runabout and shuttles. He had just initiated a full sensor sweep when the faint signal first appeared.

"Captain, sensors are picking up a warp signature. It matches the signature of the pirate vessels we fought of two days ago. It appears to be on an intercept course."

OOC: This is all happening before the action post.

He wasn't thrilled with the thought of trying to use runabouts and shuttles as fighter craft, something they weren't designed for by a long shot, but he had his orders and had to come up with some way to make it work. As much as he wanted to take command of the runabout, he knew his place was on the Bridge coordinating what was going to be a difficult operation. Croft was perfect to command the runabout, and he knew he had to cede to his experience.

"What are my orders, sir?"

Calodan pushed the assignments from his PADD to the main computer. "Lt. Croft, you are to report to the USS Williamette. Select an Engineer and Tactical officer to work with you. I left the deflector modification in the runabout's computer. You are to lead the ship as we travel. If you feel its prudent, pick another qualified pilot to work shifts with you." He paused and glanced to Ensign zh'Rel "Ensign, you are assigned to the Shuttlecraft Archer. An engineer will meet you there to help with the modifications. You are part of the oncall squadron and as such will be flying Combat Air Patrol in rotation with the other shuttles." Calodan finished his assignements and allowed the main computer to distribute the rest. When he was finished he had a capable CAP as well as the Williamette leading the charge. The pilots assigned to protecting the ship would be tired, but there would be time to rest when they got where they were going.

OCC: This is after the action post

Calodan was at Ops on the Bridge. In the last two shifts, he had only stopped to eat a hastily replicated meal and catch a sonic shower, the rest of the time he was on the Bridge, coordinating his CAP and doing his best to assist Engineering in keeping the ship from flying apart around them. In the past two days, Ghan and himself had spent a good bit of time arguing and insulting each other, but had managed to get shields up past minimums and modify the deflector to emit the pulses needed to disable any raiders they might come across. The CAP had been faithfully manned by the ships shuttles, and their crews had performed well considering the task put before them, but Calodan still wasn't happy with Hartington's defenses.

"Captain, sensors are picking up a warp signature. It matches the signature of the pirate vessels we fought of two days ago. It appears to be on an intercept course."

A quick check of his boards confirmed the sensor data Brin was feeding. The Bajoran Science officer was a bit of a a wildcard on the bridge, usually working opposite shifts as Calodan, but in the past two days he had proven his mettle and shown himself to be a capable Bridge officer. "Captain, it appears the Nekrali have gather a significant force to combat us. I'm detecting at least a dozen ships of the configuration we've already seen and several larger vessels who's capabilities are as yet unknown. I've alerted the shuttle crews and they are manning their stations. We can launch the three remaining shuttles as soon as we drop from warp."

OOC Due to the staffing situation, I'm going to use some heretofore non-existent NPC's for Croft's Runabout crew, sorry in advance if I'm over stepping my bounds

USS Willamette
Xavier Croft

Croft was surprised when he found out he was to pick his own crew, he'd expected to be assigned flight duties only. He was even more surprised to see that staffing situation on the Hartington when he looked at his options. Between injuries, the missing crew, and damage control, the ship was a little short staffed at the moment. He settled on two Ensigns that he had met personally and that (he hoped) wouldn't be missed to badly from their current assignments. Ensign Sanchez was a third watch transporter chief that had graduated top of her class at the academy, it didn't hurt that she was cute either. Ensign Tevak was a Vulcan security officer, and although Croft tended to avoid Vulcan's, he and Tevak had discovered that they both practiced hand to hand combat often and had started practicing together. Croft usually lost, but Tevak respected Croft for his few victories. Croft felt that if they were boarded, he couldn't think of another person he would rather fight alongside, not that there was that much room in a runabout. The last two days were a blur, the constant speed adjustments, stops when the Hartington couldn't go on, and the tension everytime the sensors picked up something, had made the days fly by. Croft was drinking a Raktijino when Ensign Sanchez spoke.

"Lieutenant Croft, the Hartington just picked up warp signatures on an intercept course." Croft put down his cup and tapped the console.

"Shields up, arm weapons systems. Be ready with Calodan's energy pulse."

Here we go...

Chief Brin Vek

Brin was checking telemetry when another signal suddenly appeared nearby. It was Federation for sure, Brin saw with relief.

"Captain, a runabout is approaching at high warp."

"Uss Hartington this is Uss Columbia. Request permission to approach."

Captain Brennon sighed in relief as he heard McTavish's voice. He shot a look over to Lieutenant Calodan and nodded.

"Give him permission to join the fleet. Have all vessels take up their defensive posture around Hartington.

ACTION

The alien pirates quickly drew closer to the Hartington and the small group of vessels surrounding her. It became clear that the attack force was made up of a pair of enemies. One accelerated, moving in on a collision course while the second broke off and engaged the shuttles.

***

In the Hartington's brig, the surviving bird-like aliens waited, squawking back and forth to one another, the universal translator having a great difficulty locking in on their language. The Brig Officer, Ensign Tay, stood at his post, watching the creatures as Lieutenant Zeara entered the room. Upon seeing her, the young security officer pulled himself up to attention.

"Ma'am."

Calodan opened a channel to the Columbia and simultaneously transmitted the deflector modifications as well. "Hartington to Columbia, please take up a defensive position to the rear of the ship. I'm transmitting you deflector modifications that will knock out the incoming raider's shields."

The attack began and Calodan hastily coordinated defenses with the improvised fighters. The force split themselves roughly in thirds, either engaging the ship on a collision course, defending the ship from another attack, or engaging the remaining ship. The Williamette lead the charge against the attacking vessel and the Columbia was assigned to attack the other vessel.

"Sir, I suggest we take evasive action and let the support vessels engage. These vessels have a history of performing suicide runs when disabled so the risk to Hartington is rather great."

nodding to the officer as she entered "At ease" she said and stepped further into the room. she raised an eyebrow as she listened to the squawking sounds and had no idea of what to make of it, or the creatures before her. She picked up on their annoyance, irratation, a hint of frustration and something else underlying it all.... she was unsure what that something else was as it changed from moment to moment.

"Strange..." she muttered

USS Hartington
Xavier Croft

As the attack groups split into two and the orders came in, Croft moved to intercept, the shuttles assigned to his group falling into formation behind and to each side.

"Tevak, fire the pulse as soon as we are in range."

"Aye sir."

Croft watched as the ship approached rapidly, this ship was much larger than the small raiders they had fought off before. Within moments the Ensign speaks.

"We are within range, activating polaron pulse."

There was a slight dimming of the cockpit lights as the pulse taxes the power system of the runabout, apparently the Ensign had the same misgivings Croft has about the size of the ship.

"Shields down activating graviton pulse."

Another slight dimming of the lights, then the runabout is rocked by return fire.

"Apparently they have adapted to our strategy sir."

Croft rolled the runabout to the side, then slide into a dive towards the ship.

"All vessels, fire! Target their weapons and propulsion!" The runabout is rocked by another hit and through the view port Croft can see the runabouts phasers score a direct hit on the vessel. He also sees a shuttle take a direct hit and start venting some kind of gas to space.
So much for being easy

"Captain, it appears they have modulated their shields to work around our pulses. I'm attempting to compensate but I suggest we use conventional weapons. These ships will have surprisingly strong shields for their size due to their composition."

McTavish took a deep breath as he aimed the runabout towards the Hartington aft section. Weapons came on line seemingly of their own accord. His Tactical Display began filling with targets. "Hang on Professor, this is probably going to get rough."
The Columbia streaked towards The Hartington phasers firing as targets came into optimal range.
"Professor, please begin transmitting our data to the Hartington using an encrypted channel. They need that Information over everything else."

Ensign Azmay felt the ship trembling, and thought: "Here we go again... into battle"

Location: On Patrol

Ensign Tanay heard the alarms blaring as the Hartington got into combat. She rushed to her station, ready to stand in defense of what she knew to be right.

Location: Runabout Columbia

Enemy weapons fire rocked the Runabout, causing Professor Kolar to grip the console in front of him. He looked to McTavish and nodded as the Ensign spoke.

"Transmitting the data now, though I'm not sure if it will get through. I'm detecting a lot of com interference from the raiders."

Captain Brennon nodded to his Ops Officer, clutching his chair as the ship rocked from a weapons blast.

"So ordered, Lieutenant. Helm, take evasive action, keep the enemy off our tail!"

ACTION

The Runabouts and shuttles converge on the inbound raider, ignoring the distracting vessel completely. As the ships switch to conventional weapons the more advanced phaser fire, the targeted vessel broke into a thousand pieces. The remaining ship enters the fray, launching several auxiliary craft of its own to meet the shuttles in combat.
